Full Version: Move the critique thread or reopen the screenshot thread?

So confused here. So we all know the screenshot thread was closed and were not to post in the critique thread - that makes no sense since that thread is in the Resource submission section and a screen shot is not (which can be argued) a resource. I vote we reopen the screenshot thread and do away with the "post on some ones shot before posting your own" rule. every other forum has a screenshot thread so why are we doing away with ours?

so lost....

Well, the first post in the topic says to post your work to get feedback. People work to make good (or bad) screenshots, and post them to get feedback. I don't see any problems with using the critique thread as the new hub for screenshot posters.

Its location in the Resource Submission forum isn't a problem either, as the purpose of the critique thread is for people to show off resources or work that they create. In a way, screenshots are a resource because you can use them as references to better your own forging of maps or scenes.

By titan:

The forum is for games and game design in relation to it's core engines, with miscellaneous things strewn about.

The screenshots have always been game-centric. Thus, the threads placement in GUC. The more I looked at it (Per your suggestion) the more I and the other moderators realized the theme of the thread was to obtain feedback. That feedback goes one of two ways.

"What do you think of this screenshot in relation to the game I'm designing."

and

"What can I do to improve the aesthetics in my screenshot."

One of those is centered around the game in question. This can be better done in your own thread about your game.

The other was to receive helpful comments and criticism to improve that image.

By splitting these we effectively get people talking about the game in question more instead of just the screenshot. I'm hoping this improves the flow of interest through GUC.
I know you may say: "But by showing off our screenshot, people became more interested in our game and then they'd go look at our game!" But I'm gonna be honest with you. Rarely have I looked at someone's screenshot in the screenshot thread then checked out their game in the GUC forum. The few times I have the screenshot shows good aesthetics but the game is only focusing on that, and the GUC thread is horrible.

Infact if you do have a super awesome screenshot for your game you want to show off, you really should show it off in your game's thread and get them talking about it there. Not only does this boost activity and interest in your game, it assures players your game is actually good, and you have what it takes to finish it.

You may see a relax on some of the rules in GUC to accommodate this. There's a moderator discussion going on about it.

Now if you want to see cool screenshots you gotta look in threads where the game is being actively updated and new screenshots are being posted. This is a lot more productive.

It's not as bad as you think. Personally I feel it may give some more thunder to the GUC thread, which really needs it.
