My first attempt at art was a collaboration between myself and another team member, [S.O.U.L.]. We both sketched the portrait of this character and then I colored it. I found I enjoy coloring but here is my first art I've created on a computer. These are characters from a game we are making and the style is supposed to be somewhat cute or somewhat of the term chibi. If you are wondering why their heads and eyes are slightly bigger than a normal human's, this is the reason.

This design was approved by the project leader so what you are seeing is her final design here.

And here is another character, the main character, I drew in the same night with the help of [S.O.U.L.], but the project leader has told me to change some things so this is not the final design. And this one I finished quickly so I need to clean it up.

Here is the character sprite of this main character created by the leader of the project. FragmentRonan:

And I have created my Deviantart account: http://ugaki.deviantart.com/

Please tell me what I can change or improve to make it better. Thank you.
Nanashi
Wow happy.gif I don't know how much needs improving, but I know it looks wonderful! A little shaping up on very little which might just be your style, but other than that, they are great biggrin.gif
The colouring is vibrant and your art-style looks great, so like you said, head size and eyes are part of the design. I hope to see more as the project comes along!
X-M-O
Very nicely done, very shiny too. ^^
You've a skill with colouring, especially when you look at the details that went into the colouring on the faces and in the shaded areas.
Nice work on the eyes as well. =D
Ugaki
I thank you all for the feedback. FragmentRonan just created the main character sprite so I added him to the front post. If there is any more criticisms or comments, please post here.

The main character, Ibara, as a sprite.
X-M-O
She looks great. =D
Maybe a little less "frown" in her eyebrows though. wink.gif

Will that sprite size be suitable for XP? Or is it a battler sprite?
Ugaki
It is a male character and I think the spriter made the eyebrows that way because of the portrait. If you will notice how the eyebrows are a strange shape on his face (I was told to draw them like that). RPG Maker XP has sprite size requirements? I don't think this one was intended for battles. I'd have to ask FragmentRonan himself.
X-M-O
Well, I can't be certain that it is unusable, but it doesn't appear to be the same size as I've seen most XP sprites. He may be wanting it to be that size, so I can't say for certain.

Sorry, the eyelashes and hair confused me into believing she was a she. :3
Ugaki
Ah. Yes, Ibara has a somewhat feminine hair color and slightly girlish appearance, but his expressions reflect his true gender. I think FragmentRonan custom made the sprite to fit the environment set he's drawing which is hand-made by himself. The game will have near completely custom graphics and use very little (if any) from the default selection.
X-M-O
Ah ok, that makes sense then. ^^
Sounds like you guys are really pulling this together; are you all local friends by any chance? That would be a cool thought. =]

First of all, let me say that I really like the style you've got going here. It looks really clean, bubbly and polished, which I think is really perfect for an engine like RMXP.
The first drawing is really great, I have no critique for it. You've done a great job colouring the face and the hair especially.
The second drawing, again, the colouring is spot on, but there's some issues with the proportions of the head. It looks like the cranium is a bit too big for the rest of his face/body. I realize you're going for a style that exaggerates certain features but I still think the head size could be toned down a bit here. Another thing, the hair on his right looks kind of like it is sticking to his face or something. I think this could be remedied by giving it some extra detail like it has on the other side.

Keep up the great work, I'm really keen to see more.
Ugaki
To X-M-O, I only know one of the team members in real life. The others I can only contact online. To Ember, thank you very much. I'll work on fixing the things you've mentioned and hopefully I can get a very polished look for the character soon.
Night5h4d3
I like these, more like a standard mangaka style than chibi. If you were aiming for chibi, the head tends to be rounder and eyes larger. Apart from that, it looks nice, I like what you've done with the colors.

Some suggestions cause you wanted them, on the first pic, the eyes seem a little 'derpy' I'm not sure if it's just me though, but it feels as if the eyes aren't focusing on any particular object, so they're oth aimin in their own direction, maybe try bringing the right eye (eye ball, not entire eye) more to the left. Other than that, I'd say it looks good.

For the second head, it doesn't look too long per se, but the forehead does seem a bit high, bringing the hairline down a bit would fix that. And the sprite looks really nice, I'm no real spriter, so I can't say anything about that, but it looks good to me. I'd like to see some original artwork sometime too. Again, nice work.
Ugaki
Thank you Night5h4d3. I'll try out all of your suggestions and post the results for more feedback soon.
Ugaki

I started on the next main character, Suzu. Can you please tell me how it is coming along and if things need to change before I finish it completely. It is easier to fix mistakes now than later for me. I edited Ibara somewhat with the suggestions and will post him soon.
Night5h4d3
I really like this one, actually quite possibly the best. The eyes have focus, the hairline looks good. I have to ask, are you using Paint Tool SAI for this?
Ugaki
I'm using Photoshop CS5. I should try Paint tool SAI. I saw others use it on a Youtube video and found the pen pressure strokes to be more dynamic and varied than the program I'm using.... Maybe that program responds better to details like that.
Ember
Again, it looks really great. The style is consistent with the rest of them which is really important. I think the bottom lip could be a little too thick, but that's me. Great job.
supercow
its mighty impressive it has good line and colour thumbsup.gif wish i had that talent
i dunno if it looks chibi though ....i guess the chibi thats on my mind is more childlike
few things i find kindda odd,
on the first girl whats that 4 white (pin?) on her shoulder? and her clothes seems like a towel wrap around her body , it might need a bit more shading on the hair , the skin shade looks good it makes the hair shade feels odd.

on second girl oh wait guy rolleyes.gif (sorry) the hair kindda sticky to head (been mentioned before) , the neck kindda like clothes, even though its beneath the head it doesnt nesseseraly (sorry bad englishXD) to be all shade, hmmm maybe something like this?

a bit piece of neck look forward cuz ..his a guy..had adam apple right?

3rd girl looks like it has very good potential thumbsup.gif

Something different this time around, as we were experimenting with how we want our tile sets to appear. I'm aware that the sharpening on some areas is too harsh and on other areas, too light, and this is the result of not carefully layering the environment art as she has told me will be done when creating the actual pieces for the game. It was mentioned that our game has the feel of "an animated storybook" this way; I'm unsure if that was a compliment or something else. I quite like it myself, but you can be the judge. Keep in mind that this was testing the style and filters on parts, but you will understand the overall concept by looking at this. We've also not completely decided that this is how it will be. We're just leaning in this direction for the time being.

Our main character sprite does have some animations now. I'll be showing those as soon as FragmentRonan allows me to. Please leave comments and suggestions at will. We want to perfect our game and style through good criticism.

To supercow, I thank you for the comments and suggestions! The four white pins are attached to her clothes at the back, but you can't see behind her, and rest upon her shoulders. You will see them on the sprite of her. I was given that on a description that I must draw from. Her clothes do wrap tightly around her body, but you also can't see this in full because of the view. You'll be able to see more of it on her sprite. I'll see where I can shade the hair more without making it look too dark. Thank you for the edit to Ibara. I will take your criticisms and fix him as well.

X-M-O
I'll go ahead and compliment you on your writing skills; it shows even in your posts, and I like that. happy.gif

Anyway, in relation to your latest addition, I believe that the style is perhaps "storybook style" as mentioned, but I don't believe that to be a bad thing. I'm happy to see such a complete replacement of the default mapping used in XP (no problem with having the default, but something fresh is always welcome).
Obviously you'll be working more of the kinks out, but I believe that it is just a slight bit smooth/soft. Perhaps sharpening it slightly, when you get into the more detailed parts of the project, would be desirable. =]
Ugaki

I'm only playing around with coloring....
supercow
i cant say much but admire it, even more if ur just playing around with it laugh.gif
seems like ur main focus is on the head and chest area
she looks like a plain ordinary village girl, is huge socks a custom there? maybe the right shoes should lift a little following her movement? it looks painfull
X-M-O
It looks really good, you're doing well with the shading bit. Of course you need to correct the light source (there is a shadow on her neck that implies the light is coming from one direction, whilst her chest suggests otherwise).
The colour choice, and clothing design, look quite good. ^^

Hmm I thought it was just her hair casting a shadow there.. but still it does look nice ^^

It would cast a shadow on the back of the neck, not under the chin.
Ugaki
Thank you for the excellent critique and tips. This was my first time drawing something other than a face and I don't think I did too badly for my first try. I'm having a look see to find lighting and body proportion tutorials so I can perfect things in case Fragments calls for character artwork other than a face which I think it will because I saw some portions of an animation for the title screen. I really want to help them with that. I know that I'm the primary writer, but making artwork is so much fun that its difficult to steer away from. I started sketching a gift art for my girlfriend and I hope I finish it tomorrow after I complete the remaining portraits for Fragments.
X-M-O
Oh wow, it looks very nice. ^^

The shoulder/head proportions seem to be all right, so no problems there.
I think that, eventually, you may want to practice on the remainder of the body; if it's going to be something that you'll be needing/wanting to supply for the game you're working on with Fragments. =]

More color testing and trying for a more mature drawing style.
Hirei

If you wanted to draw more realistically,

Did a quick sketch....

But overall you need to work on your proportioning a little. The head is a little too big for the body.

yeah i was thinking that too but i thought it was @ugaki style happy.gif
@ugaki did u draw the outline using mouse pointer or pen-pointer ?
btw nice quick sketch proportion @hirei thumbsup.gif
Ugaki
Yes, this is just my style, sorry. Ahaha. Most manga do not use real proportions at all, but stylized proportions instead especially if the artist has a defined style to themselves, and so I'll be using my own manga proportions for most of my drawings unless I adopt a more mature overall style. I did some work on a more realistic proportioned man but it is very messy and I won't post it. I found that I like drawing cute mangaka style better after that experiment. As for my drawings I use a mouse at times and a pen at other times.
Hirei
Yeah I can understand about style, so sorry if I seemed rude. (I draw manga-style myself so I know how annoying it can be). But I'm just pointing out that the current way you draw, it just seems odd because yeah even if it's stylized I can still find it awkward.

You don't have to take my advice, but that's just what I'm thinking.

Sorry again.
bacon
Hi.
First off, you pick some really nice colors and in terms of color schemes you are pretty good.

But. Hirei is right, anatomically it is not correct. It does not look stylized, it looks incorrect. Its an excuse to say "well its my style so Im going to leave it be". In order to have a nice style, you have to compensate and skew other features in order for it to look correct. Because you are not consistently skewing other body parts, it looks like your incorrectly mapped out your person and made an attempt to do realistic features but then never made it. This translate into a lot of your drawings. It doesn't look like you on purposely made it that way, it looks like you made a mistake and that isnt style. Again, consistently skewing features to compensate one another is what style really is especially in humans and their anatomy. Im all for the anime/manga style but you gotta do it right~

Its cool that you are playing around and stuff, I would just seriously consider studying some more anatomy and then breaking it down and skewing to make it look correct.

Nanashi
Love the artwork and colouring you are doing! The lovely painting look they have really makes them stand out and give them a glow~
Ugaki
I think I'll keep my "mistake style", sorry. Ahaha. Though now I have worked a little more on a defined style and made myself a guide for it. This way I can keep all of the characters in the style. I tweaked here and there until I found something I am comfortable with and looks great to most everyone, except maybe those who like to constrain proportions, sorry about it. I can't please everyone.

Here is the style I'm sticking with. Cheers! It got passed by the game leader today.

X-M-O
Very nice face/head structure there. ^^

I have to admit he's a little on the thin side, but maybe it's because I'm used to seeing a little more broadness in the shoulder area.
Either way, very good - and I love the outfit! =D
supercow
i dunno why but suddenly i remembered about einstein , ppl said he was crazy but he turns out to be one of the best mind ever.-not related-
i know i dont have high/wide knowledge about art , but art are varied and doesnt restrict to anything , so ppl who said this and that about art knowledge makes me wacko.gif -no offense-

@ugaki: nice drawing happy.gif ,from rough sketch looks like a boy or is it a girl?
keep focusing on what u like and ull do wonders yes.gif
Ugaki
Its a male. I don't design the characters, but go by description from someone else on some of these. And yes, I will not follow rules with making my own style in art, because rules constrain things and make you less creative. The game leader is the one who will make judgement on what my style should be as for our game. The greats like Picasso do not have "rules of proportions" and he was brilliant. I got a new art program last night and I was making sketches in it. People have to remember that I only started doing art this week. I'm new and these are my first drawings in my life, too.... So they will need to be excusing it if they are "wrong" in the first time around.

X-M-O
I really like this last one! =D
Very nicely done. ^^

What is the new program you're using?
Ugaki
I'm now using Paint Tool SAI. It has better pen pressure and art options for me. I find it to be easier to use.

X-M-O
Ah ok. =D

Hey, that sketch looks really good.
Nice work with the hand/fingers. ^^
Lato
Your work is so beautiful! And your just starting? I wish I was that good when I started, ive been doing art for many years and im not that good lol. Your not doing anything wrong that you need to improve on, but just keep on doing art and you will improve naturally.
Ugaki
Thank you. Right as of now, I am working on how to draw the environments and how the shapes of hands are because they are hard to draw.... See, I like to draw, but mainly, I like to color. (:

I did a quick sketch of Auria's (Vacant Skies) face.

X-M-O
She looks good. =]

I think you excel in colouring because you like to do it. And it shows. happy.gif
Ugaki
I'll be taking a small break from drawing in order to write what is needed for the time being, for Fragments. FragmentRonan is getting impatient with me wasting my time drawing and coloring. Ahaha. My main job is that of a writer any way....
Ugaki
My painting is improving! I know that I said I will not draw anymore, but I can't stay away from coloring, coloring, coloring....

Edit: Working on under painting for the background now.

Edit: Practicing line art.

X-M-O
Excellent line art! I'm looking forward to seeing it completed. ^^

Also, you do an amazing job at painting. Have you ever thought of just painting a scenery background, just with the background?
I think that'd be amazing; make it a waterfall. XD
Ugaki
I will make some paintings of just scenery soon. I have to make animations next so I draw the scenery separate from the extra animations on top of it. I know it seems soon for me to be drawing animations, but I have to for Fragments.
X-M-O
As far as doing things new, you seem to do it well. So good luck making the animations, would love to see your progress in that regard. =D
Ugaki
I started an art video journal on my YouTube channel.
