Hi. New here. Looking to do some writing for a game. Never done anything like that before. Anyone have any tips? Does the writer write using the game engine, or just a word processor?

You can use either, but it would be easier to edit in a word processor.
Once you've got what you want there, then it'd be easy to move it over to the game software.

To be honest most the writing in game companies is handed off to the Designers.
Most writers just use wordpad and stuff to start. I know there's more sophisticated writing tools that allow for things like scripts, dialogue, and technical writing.
People here kinda underestimate how to write for games. They sort of end up writing a book instead of a video game. That's also why it's usually handed off to the designer.
Still, you can always share your ideas and come up with great literary works to submit to the Lit network. Good luck!
