Greets everyone, as some of you know I've been working on the tileset for Laws project and for many years my own, it's been a learning curve that's taken me back several times and new ideas and style have gotten in the way.

I never really show a lot of my work but this, at the moment, is purely for the purpose of receiving feedback on the tiles themselves (Not mapping).

Update #3:

Update #2:

Update #1:

As you can see I've directed a lot of focus from other styles out there and tried to blend them together to help me create a number of consistent tilesets for both XP and VX (Using that image background mapping system from 2k3). These will eventually have their own 'request a tile' topic whereby if you require something specific added/created to a tileset then I could do that. But for now I'm sorting the ground basics and setting it up for other areas to be built upon.
amerk
I like them. They carry a sort of old school vibe somewhere in between very late NES and early SNES, but not so much the Rudra effect a lot of 2K3 games go for (such as Balmung Cycle). At first I was thinking these were 2K but then I read further that you were trying to apply them to XP and VX. I'd be curious to know how you could get this to work with VX being so limited on A tiles, without sacrificing other things like water, mountains, and trees, unless these are meant to be used with SwapXT.
Holder
Cheers, they're 32x32 tiles so they're being made directly on tilesets for XP smile.gif As for VX I'm giving permission once complete that people can create those panorama images using my tiles (With credit obviously).
The thing I'm trying to also do is not create a load of auto-tiles (there's none in the image above) and only use them for certain animated tiles which are really needed.
The Law G14
Hey these look even better than before lol laugh.gif One thing I noticed though, are the cliffs supposed to go into the grass like that or is just you showing all the parts of the tileset? Because the cliffs don’t really come down smoothly into the grass, it looks a bit unnatural. However, this is only if you were trying to make the grass and cliffs come together.

Besides that, it looks great! Oh, and just so you know, one person on HBG said “I really like the new tileset style you've got there. One thing that you might reconsider is how green the grass is, maybe a bit too bright for my tastes.” I told him I’d let you know about it, but I’m not too sure if that’s just him who thinks that way or more people. I thought the grass looked fine, but I don’t know.

I really like it! smile.gif
It's a nice style. The only thing that really stood out to me was the cliff-grass thing that Law mentioned (looks pasted on.)
Holder
Certainly taken note of that area as it's been mentioned more than anything else, as of now I'm actually focusing on completing the cliff to rock tiles since getting these sorted would be the backbone of completing the grass to cliff tiles and grass to rock tiles, plus it will also help with how the grass dirt tiles are.

I'm not sure about altering the grass colour, I mean I don't want to make it any darker as I'd be at risk of having to have limits on character sets and then not being able to make a marsh like tile. But I'll see if things alter in the future, I'm using a low colour count for each tile so coming back later to tweak should be a problem. Plus that makes creating different seasons and inner tiles easier.

To be honest I think this has been received better than any other previous work I've presented and not ripped to bits as if I was an actually designer getting sloppy laugh.gif

I love them Holder! They look absolutely amazing! The mountains remind me of Zelda or a SNES game, which I think is wicked great. I don't have any suggestions or anything like that, I like it like it is perfectly. My eyes are so sensitive all of the RTP work and costume tilesets I find hurt my eyes, so I can't say anything lol

Very awesome work Holder! Good luck and I hope to see some more soon! biggrin.gif
Holder
Thanks Magitek biggrin.gif I know some people will be put off because I'm not making these in photoshop, using millions of colours or editing the RTP so it's nice to know that there's a chance that people will use these when I finish.
Now this is a quick image from the alternative one I've been working on for my own project, now only the grass is a different colour and the shaded area is set-up for the water.
I've also included the darker colour at the base of the cliffs for the grass transition.
MagitekElite
Well I happen to like your tilesets very much, so if they are finished I would definitly use them smile.gif

The edit you made kinda reminds me of Planet Namek, which is a compliment if I'm not making myself clear tongue.gif
Holder
Yeah I got that quite a few times when I first started showing images for my project.

Showing Water added.
Next for me to do is variations in cliff structures. C&C welcome as always.
Klokinator
Wow those underwater cliffs look both amazing and really unique!
The Law G14
Holder, I must say the water and the underwater cliffs looks extreemly nice. Everything here seems to be coming along very well. Also, the variation you did a couple posts ago with the blue grass instead was also nicely done, this is really good smile.gif
Bill Nye
Amazing Holder, love those underwater cliffs!
Blue grass is kinda weird, but i'm sure it would have it's uses.
Did i mention those underwater cliffs? excl.gif excl.gif
Essenceblade
Wow, those tilesets look pretty damn good if I say so myself. They would look good in any maker, because they have the "feel" of the classic RM2k3 look to them. They look like majorly improved RTP tilesets for RM2003, Nice work so far, Holder! wink.gif
MagitekElite
Everyone already made the same comment I was going to make about the water and under water cliffs. But I'll say it anyway; amazing work Holder!

@Bill Nye:
Grass in Kentucky gets blue-green, not that blue, but still blue. Called Creeping Bentgrass, I believe. I have only seen it on yards where practical mansions are built and golf courses. tongue.gif
Reisen
I have to say, I really adore your Update #3; I love how the water is translucent and the mountain/cliff walls are very detailed, including the grass. Are those blue grasses for the second update? I hope you update more because I'm already following this since you posted it on the Cafe.
Holder
Nothing massive but I hope something that people will find useful. Cliffs can now extend out and hang, useful for natural bridges and those soppy look out to the ocean scenes tongue.gif

Mapping isn't fantastic as it's just one I was rushing to test as for the shade it's just a test to see if it was needed or required editing.

Cheers everyone, I never liked how you couldn't judge depth in most of the RTP and for those who love eventing puzzles it could make for some nice water elevation puzzles.
In regards to the blue grass that's the tileset colours I'll be using for Dracorbs first world, something familiar (like Namek as someone mentioned) so the player knows it's not Earth.

I guess it comes across as a 2k3 feel because I'm not scattering colours as much as the RTP does, and VX is really blurred.
MagitekElite
I love the undercliffs/edits, Holder! They look amazing! They will look great in mountain maps! biggrin.gif
Reisen
Mountain archways for the win! Speaking of Earth. The examples heavily remind me of Sacred Earth..
Holder
Hopefully those can also double for use within cave/dungeons, and yeah Sacred Earth has great graphics to it, slightly less details on certain tiles though but still brilliant and one of many inspirations to do this.

Just adding some characters- Knights and Templates to go with (Male-Female-Male-Female):
Reisen
The color of the armors .. it's so, attractive. I noticed something, did you lower the contrast of the cliff walls? Or maybe it's just my eyes.
Amy Pond
Those cliffs are refreshing. They look natural considering they're still confined to the square grid. And they're sloping which is a huge plus.

Given you already have them sloping though, a cool idea for a tileset would be to have say, three different gradients, like a slight slope, half, and steep slope maybe? I dunno how well that would turn out!

Thanks, figured I may need something strong to make active objects stand out from anything static/unused. I've not altered the palettes, it could be the grass colour effecting it I suppose.

Cheers smile.gif I tried to correct the grass to cliff problem, glad it worked.

When you say sloped do you mean as in turning (rather than the 45 angle) or for height elevations?
I've previously done sloped tiles when making tilesets so I'll more than likely do it for these:
Old example

I found it helped to work towards lower areas rather than using those cliff steps which are common in RTP tiles.
Reisen
The blue grasses after the slope seems to be paper-cut. But other than that, I love the slope and those darker blue grasses as well.
carnie_natas
remind me of a cross between starcraft mapping style and maybe helipad (lol)....nice work!
Holder
I've spoilered the old example of my previous work there because it might be a bit confusing laugh.gif

There's nothing really to show at the moment, basically shapes and shades. Plus I'm continuing with things to go with the tileset.
Holder

Added: Bare tree with and without roots, Stump, Log, and an angled Log.
kaz
Details on those trees fantastic and I like the roots - very realistic

Still a swooning at those underwater tiles
Holder
Thanks smile.gif I spent a bit of time going over the colours to give it more contrast and I've added the changes to the other objects.

Now I just need to decide on what style to use for the actual leaves.
Holder

Makin' like a tree.
The Law G14
Hey these are looking great Holder, nice job! I love the detail you put in everything smile.gif This is all coming together quite nicely.
Holder
Thanks smile.gif I might do an early release once I have the basics down to get some input of the use of it. Plus I think a request a tile thread might be of use to help expand the tileset on what the user's would need rather than me just guessing.
Holder

-Still working on it-
It's really tough trying to get this right, I'm not having an angled light source which is sometimes the case for trees because it doesn't look right to the rest of the tiles.

Anyways C&C on the above please, also if you can think of something which could be useful within the basic landscape setup then suggest away.
24ctPenguin
This is looking absolutely fantastic smile.gif I love the tile-able patterns you've got going on with... well, with pretty much everything, actually. The grass in particular is looking really great.

The tree is looking good so far, though I think you could probably soften the edge shape towards the bottom left and especially the bottom right of the leafy portion, it just seems a little too busy there. I just think it might distract from the crux of the detailing [ie. the highlights and leaf detail on top] once finished. Also the highlights near the bottom middle seem a little out of place but that might just be because the shading is unfinished. smile.gif

Overall though the trunk is looking great and I love the leaf patterns you've used and the colours are really nice too.

As for suggestions... um... rocks and boulders perhaps? A taller grass autotile? Flowers? Bushes and shrubs[not enough of those in tilesets if you ask me]?

Keep up the great work, it's looking awesome smile.gif
