Genre:

Action, dark fantasy, Drama

Setting

This game takes place in Feudal Japan. The "feudal" period of Japanese history, dominated by the powerful regional families (daimyō) and the military rule of warlords (shōgun), stretched from 1185 to 1868. You will be playing in the Edo period, a Period of war, politics and conflict between European and Asian Religion.

History

During the Edo period, also called the Tokugawa period, the administration of the country was shared by over two hundred daimyō in a federation governed by the Tokugawa shogunate. The Tokugawa clan, leader of the victorious eastern army in the Battle of Sekigahara, was the most powerful of them and for fifteen generations monopolized the title of Sei-i Taishōgun (often shortened to shōgun). With their headquarters at Edo (present-day Tōkyō), the Tokugawa commanded the allegiance of the other daimyō, who in turn ruled their domains with a rather high degree of autonomy.

The Tokugawa shogunate carried out a number of significant policies. They placed the samurai class above the commoners: the agriculturists, artisans, and merchants. They enacted sumptuary laws limiting hair style, dress, and accessories. They organized commoners into groups of five and held all responsible for the acts of each individual. To prevent daimyō from rebelling, the shōguns required them to maintain lavish residences in Edo and live at these residences on a rotating schedule; carry out expensive processions to and from their domains; contribute to the upkeep of shrines, temples, and roads; and seek permission before repairing their castles.

Back Story:

The "Christian problem" was, in effect, a problem of controlling both the Christian daimyo in Kyūshū and their trade with the Europeans. By 1612, the shogun's retainers and residents of Tokugawa lands had been ordered to forswear Christianity. More restrictions came in 1616 (the restriction of foreign trade to Nagasaki and Hirado, an island northwest of Kyūshū), 1622 (the execution of 120 missionaries and converts), 1624 (the expulsion of the Spanish), and 1629 (the execution of thousands of Christians). Finally, the Closed Country Edict of 1635 prohibited any Japanese from traveling outside Japan or, if someone left, from ever returning.

The christian problem reached its highlight under Ieyasu's successors Tokugawa Hidetada and Tokugawa Iemitsu, particularly after the predominantly Christian population of Kyūshū had risen in the Shimabara Rebellion against the shogunate in 1637. The uprising was crushed brutally; more than 40,000 Christians were killed. Authorities of persecution were set up, with the goal of a nationwide persecution and extermination of the Christians. Anyone who was suspected of being a Christian had to abandon Christianity publicly and dishonor Christian symbols, which were called 踏み絵 (fumie, "step-on picture'"), as well as register in the Buddhist register of faith of Buddhist temples and visit those regularly. Those who refused to abandon their Christian faith were executed, often through public crucifixion or incineration. smile.gif

Shimabara Rebellion:

It is an uprising in southwestern Japan in 1637‚€œ1638 during the Edo period. It largely involved peasants, most of them Catholic Christians. The shogun vs Samurai Christians and peasants converted to christianity.

It looks interesting, is it going to be ABS? Might I ask what kind of room that is? It seems a bit wide.

Hey buddy, Well this is a grid tactics game, and it also has a upgraded frontal view system.

I promise it wont disapoint.

That big room is a school[dojo], where Kojiro, a dragon slayer, will be imparting classes.

Interesting so it's a dojo of sorts? I'll keep an eye on this game...
titogod
Yes part of Jubei's life will be in a dojo.
titogod
I uploaded new screenshots, the big house is the Sasaki Dojo.
I added a lot of stuff to the game, I will probably have a demo next month.
machida
game is looking cool

I applaud the setting just on principle of it being something new, and the fact you actually seem to know things about the period.

However, your mapping leaves much to be desired. Everything is rather bare; the grass is all uniform with nothing on it in the dojo map, and the few cracks on the combat map aren't enough. I'd suggest looking at the screenshot thread or perhaps some mapping tutorials.

I agree, Well the outside of the dojo is not done, but I do need tutorials, can you provide some links.

UPDATE: I have been learning more on mapping, so the maps will look much better now.

Cool, I want to play NOw!

You're mapping seems a bit to open to me. I cannot see the characters. The maps in some cases do not have a authentic Japanese feel to them.

- Over 500 skills. Don't say this
- Over 100 pieces of armor and weapons.
- Deep story. Don't say this
- Move in all directions.
- Great graphics
- Tactics battle system. I did not get this feeling from your screen shots
- Advanced Front view battle system. Why? you have a tactical Battle System
- Game contains mini games Can you elaborate?
- A very fun game to play, with many hours of game play. Don't say this
- Game has cut scenes and epic battles. Don't say this
- Awesome music. Don't say this

Things where I say Don't say this means that you sound pretentious. like "My game is the best, the best and the best. I don't have to explain its just the best, the best and the best."

For example your story that you posted is more of a history text book (I am not famillar with Japanese history). I would make my own story based around a historical event. You have things like 500 skills - that might seem like a lot. are we going to learn all 500 skills? thats too many skills. I would probably use only 1 or two of the strongest skills. Its proven fact that most users will use fireaga over fire because one does more damage then the other.

Using words like epic, deep and awesome is pretentious and should be avoided at all costs.

Other then these minor issues. good luck.
titogod
Hey buddy, thanks for taking time to check this game. Well, caves for example cannot have a japanese feel into them, because humans do not inhabit it.

About the tactics system, well there is only one screenshot, you are going to have to wait for more later, my game is early in development.

Why do I have 2 battle systems? well I believe it adds cool strategy, you should play my bleach game.
http://bleachexile.weebly.com/bleach1.html

Also about the 500 skills, you are wrong and right, yes you will only use the stronger skills in a game, but mine is different, you will use skills that work effectively on certain enemies, kind of like in a pokemon game, where you will use strategy.

Couple of comments, tips, etc. Partially to elaborate on what Adrien said.

Instead of advertising mass amounts of this and amazing sounding thats, you should put a little depth into the features. Who composed your music? What style is it? What makes your 500+ skills unique(not just "certain ones only work on some enemies")? What makes your battles great?

As far as the graphics and mapping go, this one was probably my favorite screenshot:

A lot of the other ones, as mentioned before, seem bare, empty, or repetitive. You'll get better with mapping as you go, but you should also pay attention to the graphics you're using, and try to keep a consistent theme or style.

As for the battle system, I also don't understand why you have both a tactics and a front view system. Though, in my opinion, you could do some pretty cool things with that. Maybe large-scale battles with the Tactics system, and 1 vs 1 fights with the front view? Or perhaps something like Bahamut Lagoon's system?

The game has promise, but a good presentation is key to catching your audience's attention.I look forward to seeing where this goes.
titogod
Thanks a lot buddy.
titogod
Historical fact:

Did you know students at the dojo had to have sex with their teacher?

This game will have several surprises... tongue.gif

to the questions about being a great this and that... well you have to play the game!

Play my bleach game and you will see those great battles.

The game has Japanese music obviously.

I will make some chapters in vx and continue on ACE

Please remember you can only double post if more than 72 hours. Otherwise, just edit the previous one.

In any case, here's my overall impression of the game:

A lot of the graphics and audio is nice, but in my opinion not used well or consistently. For example, your audio is decent throughout the game and fits the mood nicely, but when I get into the first boss fight, One Winged Angel plays and I had to cringe. It's not that I detest the song, but I hear it in so many RM games. As for mapping, some of it comes together nicely as in this:

CLICK

While other times not so much as in this:

CLICK

The dialogue was awkward at times, and our hero likes to ramble on to himself. Also, he tends to come across as a bit of a numbskull.

CLICK

Both the battle system and the battlers were pretty impressive, and I was mildly surprised when the game went from the traditional turn-based to a tactical approach for the first boss. To be honest though, I think the tactical theme works better for all fights here, considering this isn't your typical rpg, and the turn-based seems to detract from the setting. The main issue I have with this game is I'm not sure what to think of it, nor am I convinced the game knows what it should be. It's got a sort of ancient feudal Samurai theme, with a dark edgy style, in a sort of adventure platform with rpg elements; and yet the characters talk like they've been ripped from a badly dubbed anime, the maps appear as if they are nothing more than stages in between chapters, and you're just randomly walking around either looking for a random fight (which I think aren't really needed) or the exit to the map.
titogod
Hello! thx for the feedback and time sir.

Yes the one winged song has been removed, because another user told me so a few days back. I have not updated thte demo because I want to add a lot more things.

This is a game I work by myselft so it's hard to cover all things perfect at once.

"The main issue I have with this game is I'm not sure what to think of it, nor am I convinced the game knows what it should be"

I believe this is a unique game, being a mix of many things, but Let me tell you that the story was written by me before starting developing the game. smile.gif so I am directing the game and it know where it's going, this is a early demo so maybe it's not quite clear yet, but it will be.
titogod
New demo coming soon, check out my site, and also fixed the boat map.

Hey! I'm glad to see someone using the Samurai set. You have some decent stuff, and congrats for making it this far in production because I know it's a lot of work. There are some things that could use improvement, and I found one game-ending bug. I'm not sure which version I downloaded because the one I played still had One Winged Angel in it. Here are some notes:

- Liked the sex scene in the beginning. Very cute.
- Some details on the map are difficult to see because of the screen's dimness and color clashing. For instance, the rock blocking the door in the mountain at the beginning of the game. That whole section needs to be brightened a little, I think. You also have dim text on dim maps when the chapter titles appear.
- Hopping over ledges and rocks is cool, but it's a little odd that I can only hop over some rocks but not others. Maybe add some complexity to that section, so it's not just a linear path?
- The cursing seems a bit out of place, considering this is feudal japan
- The combination of battle systems you have going could be interesting, but a tactics-style battle with only one player and one enemy is rather dull. Also, when you get to far up on the map, the move select menu gets cut off by the top of the screen...not really how to fix that other than not making the battle field extend to the top of the map.
-Refer to the picture: Right before the burning cross at the beginning, if the player steps on the highlighted tile, he steps forward until he is blocked by the rock and the game freezes. The game is waiting for him to finish stepping to the right, but he cannot. Either take the rock out or check the "skip if cannot move" box in the event block for his character movement.

Keep up the good work!
titogod

I guess i should tell u that i played ur game, and i guess i should also tell u this...

..U r using Mulan music for the boat travel scenes. ><
.. Also.. i do think u maybe might want to make them talk a little more conservatively. ..And idk, personally, i find it a little odd that the samurai and his mistress are having sex outside... (' v ')

These are just slight things i kind of noticed, (•o•) but i really enjoyed the historical information and journey. U r making good progress on ur game.
titogod
so what if i used that music? so what if people have sex outside in a forest? these sex practices are done through the world many times a day. there is nothing odd in this.
Magical_RuNE_Knight2001
The music is from kingdom hearts II and its mulan's theme.. its chinese.. o.<?

And the sex thing... Yea, idk about that.. o.<?
Just saying, but... I think they have a house/ a wall? >.< And maybe in other countries, but im pretty sure sex is seen as a more of a private thing among asians. Like something u keep to urself; going beyond kissing in public just seems a bit inappropriate/ odd/ 'losing face'. Ive never even seen my parents hug, and i personally am not a fan of/ would want to engage in pda. >.o
titogod
Well the japanse culture comes a lot from chinese. and Yes everybody has sex in public, Yes, even asians. >.>
Fleta
I just downloaded and tried your game... I have to say I'm disappointed. First of all a non important part. The opening screen sends you to another opening screen. If you quit from there it sends you to another screen that you have to quit from (the one you just left by hitting enter).

On with the game. When you leave your love to be raped or whatever, you just go to a screen that jumps you at seemingly random times until you get to the cave. You go in and don't have any battle, the Gods destroy the cross for you and kill your enemies for you. Then you go to another character apparently on the opposite side, and he has to equalize hate to open the gates of heaven. I've tried rolling those things onto the black squares, but that does nothing. I don't like being stumped this early in a game, but I have no clue what you're looking for here. Am I missing something?
Magical_RuNE_Knight2001

Alright; well its ur game, but if i were u, i'd take a look at this. :

Played the first game. Full of obnoxious fetch-quests, inconsistent player movespeed (sometimes you couldn't even hold shift to dash, and sometimes you could?), name inconsistencies (is your sister's name Sakura or Harkua?), spelling/grammatical errors and typos, wandering around large empty spaces, and dealing with the most repetitive "combat" you have in the game, which is just mashing buttons waiting for something to happen. I stopped playing right around the time Jubei matured, and mysteriously donned a modern red sweater and Haruka's hair turning pink. It was just too much.

Sorry, but the review I read on RMN was pretty spot on. Maybe you got better with your other two games.
