I love that your game is getting so many questions! It sounds like you need a walkthrough, any plans to make one? I wouldn't mind writing out some tips and such I come across as I play through, if you would like me too. Though I am helping with a few other projects, including my own so it may not be coming too quick.

Oh that would be really cool! Tips from other players are always welcome, its always interesting to see if players use different strategies than my own. smile.gif
I do plan on releasing a full walkthrough when the game is finished though. The game will be fairly lengthy with plenty of extras, so it'll help people get 100% should they wish to!

A walkthrough would definitely add to it. I like to try to get through stuff but often times get frustrated by not having a psychic link to the originator's mind.

Once more into the fray, I saved the king, got the second shard and went back to the room (got the speech from Oruba nice to have him stay since he's become quite the magician for me) and went to each of the other map pieces and (splat!) nothing happened. The water shard isn't going into any of the others. Is there a map piece somewhere else?

That water shard should fit on to one of the blue pedestals. Are you sure you tried all of them? smile.gif

To answer you, HOW THE *!@# DO YOU HURT THE DARK MAGE?!??!? I've faced him twice and haven't gotten a single point of damage. Magic has no effect, attacks have no effect.... SHEESH! smile.gif
Shaddow
Kill his flunkies first, then you can tear him up, but not with magic, he is immune.

Amazing work Orias. When can we expect the next part? I'm dying to get to the third area!
Orias Obderhode
I'm glad you enjoyed it! You can actually reach the third area with the current demo you're playing. With Cardial cleared, if you head back to Erdrich Castle, the king will give you some information that'll lead to the third region.

However, I'm in the process of putting the finishing touches on the last demo. I imagine the last demo for the game will be released sometime early next week. smile.gif

That's so incredible! You put me to shame with how quickly you are getting this done! Can't wait to play it though! laugh.gif

I appreciate the support everyone! smile.gif

As for the new demo, it will probably be sometime this weekend. I figured out that the whip was broken at high levels and I've now readjusted it. But I also realize that the whip in its current state was part of what made the early regions easier, so I'm doing some balancing and things to make sure the game flows just as smoothly as it did before. I'm also increasing the amount of EXP dropped by enemies in Rhemhage on. smile.gif
Orias Obderhode
Well, I think I can say that I am finally satisfied with all of the changes added to the new version! As such, I am releasing the final demo for Legacy of the Lost. At this time, if I had to estimate when the project will be totally completed, it would be next summer.

Anyways, here is the download link for the new version.

DOWNLOAD

I hope you all enjoy the demo! Here is a full list of changes. smile.gif

Legacy of the Lost Version 2.0:
- Three new regions: Illae, Esrarch and Onyu have been added.
- Monster Breeding is now available.
- Tons of new sidequests were added.
- Based on the answers to the questions at the beginning of the game, Aldain now starts with a special skill.
- Drop rates on monster materials have increased.
- Heal is no longer "holy" based.
- The process for getting information to get through Erdrich Forest has changed.*
- Expansion of Arena.
- Arena no longer only revives Aldain upon defeat.
- Arena victory music is fixed.
- Changed Olian's sprite.
- Changed Aldain's sprite from the side.
- RobMagic now steals enemy's MP instead of just decreasing it.
- Sap and Slow now work with much higher accuracy.
- Removed the "!" warping you to Cardial (was present in version 1.5).
- Exit Bells no longer stop working after the Cardial Region.
- EXP earned from monsters in Rhemhage, Cardial, Yardrick, and Bariden has increased.
- It is no longer possible to get stuck if you die in Sea Devil's Lair before facing the Sea Devil.
- Several actions have been adjusted - in accordance with this change, the stats of certain enemies and bosses have been changed.

KNOWN ISSUES:
- Most battle animations are still RTP default.
- It is possible the game will crash when F12 is used to reset. If it it crashes, the file should not become corrupted.
Orias Obderhode
Been really busy lately, but I've finally decided to begin working on some of the battle animations. I know that having the RTP battle animations took away some of the immersion. I'm quite pleased with most of them so far. smile.gif

Here are just a few examples:

Shaddow
These animations really look amazing, great job on them! Also thank you for taking the time to improve upon that even though it is such a little thing. It is things like this that will truly make your game shine.
amerk
Instant glorification! Those really fit the theme well and deserving of another playthrough.

Oh, that particular Wind Shard is for unlocking Yuria (from the king). You'll need get a different wind shard from a fisherman in Cardial in the present. smile.gif

I appreciate the support! I'm doing my best to make some sort of progress on the game daily. smile.gif

Finally a good classic rpg game with rmvx!
markchapman10
This does look great! happy.gif
Orias Obderhode
Progress is coming along nicely!

I just now finished the 10th region! There are only 3 full length regions left plus the final area. The game is shaping up quite nicely and there are quite a few extras that have been added in recently. Here's a sneak peak!

Tinymedal Queen's Palace

Wondrous prizes await those who collect tinymedals!

Dharma Temple

At Dharma Temple, you can undertake trials to master powerful abilities such as "Aggravate," which taunts an enemy into attacking you.

The region concludes with my favorite boss battle so far! It'll take using all of your resources to conquer this fight!
Orias Obderhode
Well, I'm coming up on to the end of this game. Below is a list of things that I have to finish. I'd estimate my progress to be about 85% done; I'd imagine the finished game to be released sometime early 2013.

Left to do:
- Complete Persiva
- Complete Excate and Final Boss
- Add Legendary Weapons, Relic Monster Accessories, and Mythic Quests
- Finish the Achievement System
- Finish the Onyu Sidequest
- Add Slime Breeder
- Finish the Arena
- Finish Tinymedal Woman
- Make sure initial tinymedals reward the variable.
- Herb Hunting
- Fix Churches (for achievement purposes)
- Finalize all battle animations.
- Determine if Introduction CS needs any revising.
- Bug testing/balancing.

Anyways, my big question is should there be any post-game content? The game is already quite huge - my current playthrough is logged at 47 hours - and that is with me knowing exactly what to do.

If there was post-game content, what would you like it to be? I have two ideas if I was to do anything:

  1. A daunting "area of trials" similar to the Hell Gate from Tactics Ogre. In Tactics Ogre the Hell Gate was a 100 floor dungeon in which you could acquire excellent treasure.
  2. Just a Final hard dungeon.

Each of these would reward rare equipment and a new monster recruit.

Also, would you like to see a monster bestiary?
I'm sure I can find a script for it. I never really use them, but they are kind of cool I guess.

Probably by the end of January I will be seeking beta testers for the final version of Legacy of the Lost. Anyways, I appreciate the support of the community - let me know if you think there should be post-game content/bestiary and if you would be interested in testing when the time comes. smile.gif
Shaddow
Post game content would be lovely. I don't want you to delay your game any more than needed, but perhaps an entire secret area, with unique monsters and quests would be fun. It wouldn't even really have to involve the story, or it could even be just an option to do something after it is all done, fix the small problems after saving the world?

Also adding a few harder difficulty levels to the arena post game is a good idea.

I would like to offer to beta test for you, I've loved this game since I first read about it and will be glad to help in any way.

I would love a bestiary, personally I'm a fool for collectables and that just adds another. There are several good bestiary scripts out there, and some will even allow you to modify them to fit your game better, though I'm sure you already have something in mind.
Orias Obderhode
Ooooh, I really like the idea of a harder arena. That is pretty easy to implement and should be fun too!

Thanks for your responses. smile.gif

And I'd happily let you beta test!

Let me start with the bad things:
Your story could use more substance.

Here are the good things:
EVERYTHING. I'm a real sucker for non-rtp and retro graphics, so you have grabbed my interest immediately with them. Features and characters do a good job of representing the DQ series. That is a big compliment for you as I am quite a fan of the series myself, starting way back in the days when it was called Dragon Warrior.

Keep us updated. happy.gif

Yea, usually I had bad graphics because it's sucky. But it works for DQ.
Orias Obderhode
As of last night, I finished the final full-length region! With that region out of the way, I am anticipating needing the beta testers sometime early January. smile.gif

I did decide to add a bestiary! I used KGC's EnemyGuide script for the bestiary. It had all the features I wanted.

As of right now, I'm still unsure if I'll add a final dungeon with the initial release. Right now, I'm leaning toward arena expansion as the primary challenge for endgame - until I add some type of expansion for those wishing to do more, if the demand is there.

Would you like to be in Legacy of the Lost?

With the endgame arena battles, I would like to offer up the opportunity for you to be in the game as a sort of "cameo" character. To end up in the game, I would like to know the following!

Name: What would the arena master's name be? Don't put a crazy name like XxxSephirothxxX.

Sprite: If you want to make a sprite, that would be great! If not, just tell me what it should kind of look like/color scheme.

If you would like to make a sprite, here is a Template File and one of the People Character sets I use as guidance.

Monster Team
: Who would you monster team be? You can only choose monsters from Dragon Warrior Monsters 1/2. What I'd really like is for you to choose your favorite party that you used in the game itself. I personally will be using my final party from the last playthrough. If you would like to choose the 3 skills your monster uses too, you are able!
Orias Obderhode
Beta testing will be starting shortly! I am removing the download for the current demo until the final release.

It's not much, but here is a picture from the final region. Darkness makes navigation so much harder!

I may can accept one more. smile.gif

Right now I have two beta testers (and myself), one is approaching the final boss and one is 1/4 done or so. My hope is to release the game sometime late February or early March.

If you would be wiling to try and make it within that timeframe (I wouldn't want you to feel rushed / make the experience less fun), I would be happy to add you as a tester!

@Ratty524:

Do you think it would work better as a solid color? I kind of liked the gradual fade effect, but I don't want it to look out of place either.

Considering that the look is 8-bit, I do think it would work better as a solid color. I don't think any gameboy color system could produce a gradual effect like that. tongue.gif

... Or here is an idea: try to ad dithering around the area of the visible circle. It's a common shading technique in spriting that adds some tonal values to your artwork without breaking out of the color palette.

Some images to give an example of what I mean

Orias Obderhode
I liked it before, but I really think it does look better without the gradient effect. I did dither it some too like you suggested!

What do you think? smile.gif

Ratty524
Not bad at all! The blue-colored pixels look a little bit odd, I would be fine if it were just another shade of gray, but it's significantly better.

I've always been torn about some of these "retro" games, whether it's correct to call them 8-bit or something else. When I was playing this, I felt like it fell somewhere in between late NES (8-bit) and early SNES (16-bit). So while I don't think it imitates a true 8-bit experience (what does, these days?), I find the blend quite appealing. So I guess I've started using the term "retro" to apply to anything from 16-bit and before.

Anyhow, just chiming into the discussion. The look and feel of the game is great, and definitely looking forward to the final version.
Orias Obderhode

I do plan on writing a walk-through. smile.gif

It'll be a bit though before it's done just due to the size of the game and that I'm not dedicating all my time to it either. Currently, I'm trying to release a quick patch for the game to fix a few issues. I didn't realize that the treasure game went slow on every computer - was a little slower on mine but not much - so I found a way that lag is non-existent. A few have pointed out a handful of typos and things too. This "revised version" will be almost no different than what I released.

Have you talked with everyone? Theres about 18 NPCs in the village, but I oinly made it so if you talked to at least 11 of the 8, the mayor should register that you "know about the problems."

The only requirements are talking to that older guy in the inn twice and talking to at least 11 people.

Hey all! The updated version is here. It is 100% compatible with all save files from the previous final version. I would strongly encourage all of you to download this update as it fixes all the minor and major bugs (lag) present in the original final version.

New equipment has been added, so be sure to check out the "Equipment" tab on the game page on RMN.

When I make an update, I always want to be sure and include new content. I've added Notorious Monsters (NM's) akin to FFXI. Every region in past time now has a rare encounter with a monster that is slightly stronger than the normal monsters around that region. Defeating that monster is sure to bring great rewards to the player.

Here is a list of all of the changes:

1. The Treasure Game has no lag at all anymore. As such, the time given to complete the task has been reduced to 25 seconds. It plays much smoother now.
2. In Erdrich Forest, the correct path of west, west, south, east, north did not work the first time. In the new version, the path will work right away. (In the old one, you had to go any direction one time and then the path would work)
3. I reduced the HP of certain monsters in Erdrich, Rhemhage, Quevi, Yu'Tolio, and Persiva regions.
4. Lowered the MP Cost of Aldain's Frizz to 1 and Frizz is now learned at level 3.
5. Drop rate on certain monster materials have increased.
6. It is now possible to purchase an Emerald Ring (prevents silence) and Iron Cuirass before facing the boss of the Quevi region.
7. Some enemies now drop more gold.
8. The password in the pyramid has been changed so that it fits 100% on the screen.
9. A npc has been added that mentions what you should do in Yardrick.
10. The requirements on getting the Rhemhage Mayor to acknowledge your help and let you recruit Oruba have been lowered.
11. The weapon, Trident, poisoned enemies. It wasn't supposed to, so this has been removed. Now the high end spears (Slender and Holy Lance) now have additional effects on them.
12. It is now easier to find the battle with the dragon for the legendary quest for Ragnarok.

2. In Erdrich Forest, the correct path of west, west, south, east, north did not work the first time. In the new version, the path will work right away. (In the old one, you had to go any direction one time and then the path would work)

4. Lowered the MP Cost of Aldain's Frizz to 1 and Frizz is now learned at level 3.

9. A npc has been added that mentions what you should do in Yardrick.

10. The requirements on getting the Rhemhage Mayor to acknowledge your help and let you recruit Oruba have been lowered.

2) So that's why when I went south the first time it took me back to the southern portion of the forest...

4) If you use a save version of the old version and Aldain is level 3 but hasn't learned it, will he then have it or do you have to wait until he levels up?

9) Good, I was about to be frustrated.

10) HAZZAH!!!! So I can start over without losing Oruba again!

Also, if you installed the PressStart2P already from an old version, do you need to do it again? Still loving every minute except that when I stop, the music stays on in my head for DAYS!!!! biggrin.gif

Installing the font is a one time thing. smile.gif

As for "Frizz" and the level 20 ability I added, "Taunt", Aldain won't learn them on an old save file. For some reason RPGMaker loads character data upon hitting "new file" and subsequent changes to the game won't erase the old data with the new.

I started out again with the Final Final. Once I got to the first shrine area, I met up with Foo the Fighter(?) (Foo the something)... Man oh MAN! Is there a way to get him? I tried getting rid of his MP's... That didn't faze him. I tried fighting and Fizzing him... That didn't work, he healed 79 points at a time AND still was able to hit me. I barely escaped with my head on (4 points out of 60 after 3 herbs and 5 Heal spells). My second level Azuli wasn't so lucky... Any clues? I never met him before. And he was the first monster I met.
