QUOTE (Strawberry @ Jan 16 2012, 12:37 PM) *
Hello!

Some minor, but fun updates! biggrin.gif

First a side-view portrait of Aelina, which will be used in menus and such; only.

Such as this wordless mockup of our main menu! Hehe.

Then we added a mini-map to battles, so you can tell where your allies are and where the monsters are:

And finally a question. YAY! Anyhoo. I want to change the way dialogue is played out in scenes and when talking to NPC's. The way we have it now is sort of bad, because it looks silly when an non-important character is talking.

So I found some examples on the internet on how we might be able to remedy this. If you have your own idea, please share! ^^

Example 1:

Example 2:

Thanks for reading!

I've always been a fan of the Lunar games, the way the character dialogue looks is really nice, so that's my recommendation is example 1.

As far as you game goes, it's probably one of the best looking games I've seen in a while. It really inspires me to push the makers to the limits and make a great game too! I have to say that I love Aelina's personality and voice! 'Your body looks so adorable lying there!' that made me giggle for minutes!

The battle system seems really nice too, my only question regarding it, is how do you balance out the attacks? In games like tales or star ocean you have a limited number of times you can attack or a combo that ends giving a slight delay. Is there something like this in your game or is the system itself just built for that?

The maps look amazing, I had forgotten how well a map can look on this maker. Your mapping skills are really good and I can only hope they get better. I agree with everyone above me, the sprites and art are fantastic, it really adds depth to the character that pure dialogue just can't get across.

I really hope you keep up the good work and look forward to a demo!
StarGGundam2
Thanks man! I've been around in the RM community for a while now. I don't fault people for having games with side view battle systems and other things that people make, but I just wanna stand out from the rest and not take the easy way out if you know what I mean. There's resources out there that help you make a better game, which is why I'm gonna take this game by the reins and not give up on it.

As for the combo thing, This is gonna be in the game I just haven't gotten around to implement it. It's really quite easy to do in my stand point so there's no chance of it not making it to the demo. Infact, other cool things like overlimit and stuff like that while also play a key role in my battle system, but it might not make it to the demo as the demo will only support up to level 10 anyway.
Shaddow
That's always good to hear, a demo is only a partial game anyways so even if it doesn't include everything, it's only there to get a feel for the actual game. You will definitely stand out from the rest, I'm surprised there hasn't been more comments honestly. This game is probably the one I'm looking forward to being finished at the moment, so keep up the good work!
X-M-O
I've looked over this topic a few times in the past, but never really had a chance to comment.
I would like to say that the artwork is very clean and refined, and the theme appears to be meticulously planned out. =]

I noticed a few questions that seemingly went unanswered, but hopefully I can put some opinion in here that might be of some use to your game's development.
In relation to the dialogue box location for primary characters versus others, I really liked the idea you guys had to place the primary character's dialogue box at the bottom (as shown here) and the other characters' dialogue box at the top (as shown here).
Brilliant idea, and hopefully it works as well in reality as it does in theory. =]

There was also this question:
Equipment Upgrades
QUOTE
How would you prefer to upgrade your equipment?

1. You go from one town to the other and buy new gear for each party member like any old J-RPG.

2. You go from one town to the other and buy new gear for each party member like any old J-RPG OR you can synthesis a piece of an equipment with a special effect (like a weapon that inflicts Poison or a piece of armor that guards against Poison).

3. You go from one town to the other and buy new gear for each party member like any old J-RPG OR you can further upgrade that gear into +1 equipment and give it special effects exclusive to that piece of gear (like a +1 Trident inflicts Water damage now, as oppose to a normal Trident).

I like #3 as an option, and if done correctly it should be practical in the game.
I've seen this feature done incorrectly though, where it was more costly to upgrade things than it was to buy better weapons from the shops.
Just be wary of that.
Also you could make it so that you could find little ingredients and then synthesise these ingredients to make parts that can be upgraded onto your weaponry/armour. But just be sure that it is balanced if you attempt this feature (not too easy to get the ingredients, but not so difficult that buying a new weapon is easier/better).

Also, I like the idea you had for the comic relief vampire father character, lol.
Count Chocula. XD
Is Star going to do the voice for him?
StarGGundam2
Thanks for posting! All the more reason why we gotta release a demo soon so you guys can play too biggrin.gif I wanna play too as well. It may sound weird but I'm making this game so I can play my own game as well. I kinda put things into the thought process of; "If I wouldn't want to play it, they sure wouldn't either. So if I really wanna play it, they will."

I'm glad you like my comic relief Dad that sounds like Count Chocula, Strawberry's the only one that's doubting this cause she has no sense of humor. But I think it's awesome. Yes, I will be doing the voice, I'm pretty good at altering it and I've been practicing like it's been a part of my balanced breakfast.

Though, I must ask, do I know you from some other site? It seems like you know me. o.o
X-M-O
It's possible that you might know me, I've been around the internet since I was very young and I'm going on 22 soon. >:3
(Of course, I've almost always used this username but I also use: Ricochet, Darchangel, and quite a few others; if one of them sounds familiar then it could possibly be me, lol.)

That's great. I do a vampire voice as well, and it freaks my students out when I do it during lecture. tongue.gif
Strawberry has a sense of humour, but perhaps not as pointless/silly as yours or mine. wink.gif
We tend to laugh at anything, like the word "chuff". Strawberry appears to appreciate more intellectually developed humour.
(I don't mind either way, as I tend to have a weird outlook on life and comparing me to others is equivalent to comparing me to a rock that can't laugh anyway.) XD
StarGGundam2
Ahahh! That's how you know so much about me, cause we're alike or maybe Strawberry's been spilling the beans. >.> <.< Chuff.. HAHAHAHA It's like Cuff but with a Huff CHUUU FFFFF. What the heck, that's funny xD.

When rocks laugh, they cause earthquakes!

I'd imagine my Midlyn Rowan and Aelina conversation would go something like this:

Midlyn: Vywhy don't vyuu be a good lilttle girl and leave Daddy to his vwork?
Aelina: Aww, but watching you is so much fun! <3
Midlyn: FFFFFF Get out of here before you're grounded.
Aelina: Fine, I'll leave you alone.
Midlyn: Vwhere did ur SISter Reina go?
Midlyn: Huh?
Aelina: I didn't say anything.

Anyway, back on topic. I think XMO's idea is good. Characters which face portraits get still text box, characters without get it above their head. So there's no confusion.
X-M-O
I don't think Strawberry has spilled the beans, lol.

Nice conversation. I can hear myself acting that one out. XD

It was your idea, or Strawberry's, but I liked it so there you go. >:3
Adrien.
I do really like how this game is turning out and i do follow its progress. its an inspiration for my game in terms of character development, story and more. I like this game
Strawberry
Hey all, it feels like I haven't updated this in forever. D=

We've decided to use number 1 for dialogue with portraits, and number 2 for non-portrait NPCs.

How is progress going?

To be honest - slow. Maybe we're just worn out working on this thing, but we do aim to at least put out a demo to see what everyone thinks. I keep changing the equipment for the characters. Now, they have a chance to wear something heavy, or something light. o.o Of course, boys and girls get separate equipment - because the equipment may give augments that only benefit a certain gender. Sadly, I've been procrastinating getting the females heavy gear done. ;_; I'm a horrible hobbyist. XD

We did do a lot planning for the story, however. Most of it holds spoilers, so I won't discuss them here.

It's not much, but at least you know how Ghost Shards has been coming along. o.o

Here's a picture of the heroine, Aelina with her scythe - drawn by my fiance. <3

Strawberry
A couple of minor updates...

Battle Notes:
*Players now cannot attack non-stop, but instead only attack about three times in a row

Art Notes:
New Logo!

Why? Well, one logo got heavy complaints and the other had a subtitle I've gotten rid of ages ago. So I opted to get a new one. Credits go to Radethdart. ^^

Some portraits of important NPCs: (Ashe and Aera)

Ghost Shards is getting new graphics! Not really, but I was bored and sprited some stuff of Aelina with inspirations from handheld games. XD

Strawberry
Bumping up updates. YAY!

A fixed logo? o.o

A picture of Aelina:

Someone bored enough decided to make us this for fun!

Now some words...

I don't know about my fiance, but my motivation is running low. I'm feeling... dis-heartened about working on Ghost Shards. Maybe it's the fact that I feel useless in its production, or I'm getting frustrated over little things. I don't know. We told ourselves we would not stop working on the game until we at least get a demo out and no one likes it. XD

I keep asking myself if this is worth it. I have a lovely backlog of stories in my brain that I would love to work on, but Ghost Shards - according to my fiance - must take priority. Maybe the interest is dying for me because I want to write about something new already without giving this a chance. This is what, my 4th game that I've worked on?

I never completed anything in my life. Perhaps I should start now, or perhaps this isn't for me...
Dragoncookie
Strawberry, you can't feel like that! I also tend to give up on my projects because I want to do something new. I've given up on around 35 projects already, all with their own characters and storyline! That's why I posted Crystal Tears here: I need to finish a game at least once to see if I'm fit for this, or not. So you can't give up! Just... find something that will restore a motivation. To me, it's one particular comment in my game's thread. It always makes me think: "Maybe I should finish this after all". And your game has such an amazing concept too! I love your characters, as well. They all seem so well-designed, with an amazing personality. You shouldn't give up on this project! Don't be like the masses of people who can't finish something. If you want to stop making games, you have to at least say: "I tried once. It wasn't for me".

On another note the sprites look adorable! biggrin.gif
X-M-O
I completely agree with Dragoncookie, you really need to finish this one (it really is a great concept) or at least get a demo out on it. happy.gif
For now, I'd say that you should write down your other idea so that you don't forget about it, and then work on finishing this one.
You'll feel really good once you've actually completed the project enough to be able to release a demo (it always feels great to complete something). wink.gif

And, once you complete it - who knows - once you know how good it feels, you might even create a new habit of completing every game concept you come up with in the future. ^^
Strawberry
Thanks for the encouragement, guys and gals! biggrin.gif

I'm going to keep trucking.

UPDATES (I think)

THE BATTLE SYSTEM
My fiance has been working greatly on the gameplay aspects of Ghost Shards. While there isn't a menu for it, tactics can technically be set to your AI teammates. He tells me that in about three weeks, there should be a playable battle system demo for people to try. I am excited about that.

CUT-SCENES
I've been thinking a lot about this aspect of the game. How can we make 2D cut-scenes interesting? Voice acting? Using our protraits differently? Use pictures to show the scene? I'm afraid of people not liking to read text box, after text box, after text box. If anyone has any ideas, please do share. ^^

CONCLUSION
This is not much, but it's what we've been working on. Sorry, there are not fun pictures this time. :<
LiberalElephant
This looks pretty legit. I love the idea of spirits controlling the weather. If only RMVX actually worked on my computer...
khachuchrian
looks amazing and very cool if i might add.

need any help with music?
Strawberry
@LiberalElephant - This is all on RMXP, but it sucks RMVX doesn't work on your computer. ;_;

@khachuchrian - Hi hi! We kind of have a musician, but he's only going to do like 10ish songs (not sure if it'll be enough), so if we need extra songs or something, maybe we can recruit you as a back-up? Our musician has stated that battle themes were his weakness, so if he can't do that, then I might need that and a boss theme. ^^;

Here's our title theme, by Merlandese. biggrin.gif

hes really good hehe sounds very nice
ShinGamix
@LiberalElephant Why doesn't it work. Let me guess you are having issues with either the ntiles server or the RGSS player keeps shutting down?
If so read this.
Fix XP Compatibility Issues

Then you should be able to use it.
Strawberry
Thanks for helping him!

Hey all, we are looking for a female songstress to sing these lyrics to go along with the Title Theme that Merlandese composed for us. If you're willing, please let me know and I will PM you the details! biggrin.gif

Beautiful tracks Strawberry wink.gif . Particularly like the Crusaders theme.
IMO the B V Theme could be more upbeat.... or just simply up the tempo on this one !
Overall nice work...and best of luck with this project !
Strawberry
Battle themes were actually his weakness, but he tried. XD I bet we could speed it up in a program. ^^;

What do you guys think of the updated story and character descriptions?

STORY
The world of Arixale, ruled by nine sleeping Divinities, is in need of their awakening with the songs of the Stonesingers. Without the presence of the Divine, weather will cease to flow, the world will slowly degrade into a stagnant land.

However, all Stonesingers who recently ventured into the shrines of Divinities have yet to return. They were sent there only to be never seen again, not a slightest sound was heard by anyone. The only thing left from their disappearance are their ghost shards - a materialised piece of their soul.

A humble tavern bard and entertainer, Aelina Rowan, was arrested for crimes she felt innocent for. She was offered an alternative to redeem herself by fulfilling the role of a Stonesinger, oblivious about the mysterious disappearance of those who tried before her. Her journey would be accompanied by Narie Tearwyn, the twin sister of another Stonesinger, who perished in the very same quest Aelina is about to undertake.

The Divinities continue to slumber. Time continues to race with the fate of mortals. Why can't they be awakened? How much longer can the world of Arixale wait?

"Aw, you're no fun... I wanted to play! Hehe!"
Age: 20
Race: Frost Pixie
Gender: Female
Weapon: Scythes and Staffs

The symbol of joy, the herald of happiness, the heart of delight, these are all what Aelina Rowan has known to be in a cold village of Evertear. Who would have thought an innocent girl like her could be involved in a lethal crime?

A sweet, soothing voice has been Aelina's main tool of trade, ever since she left home and joined a travelling troupe to spread the sound of wonderful music. While some people found her sense of humor to be at times creepy and sarcastic, her voice and a happy-go-lucky attitude have won her support from those who seek a relaxing retreat in the taverns. Even with her innocent arrest, she has been asked to use her voice to redeem herself - by becoming the next Stonesinger.

The future is looking blurry to her, having gone from a joyful bard to a herald of the Divinities. With the burden of an entire world on her shoulder, would she succeed, and what price would she have to pay?

Justice. Narie lives and dies by that word. Along with her sister Sarie, they spread kindness and virtues of the world to others together. This chosen path of theirs began from the church of Silver Hill, where they could put their virtues to good use.

As Narie and Sarie approach young adult ages, they turned to the opportunity of becoming a Stonesinger. Only Sarie was chosen by the Divinities to fulfill the quest of awakening them.
A lone ghost shard was the sole thing left of Sarie afterwards.

Narie made a promise to herself. A very serious promise. Justice must be served. No excuses or delay. Something must be done now.

For her sister, her friend, and all the Stonesingers. They cannot be all gone in vain.

And which sprite style do you guys prefer?
Laue
This looks amazing. Do keep up your good work. Of course, this reminds me how... lesser my project is. Waiting for a demo.

Thanks!

I will when I re-make it. It was a horrible, horrible world map. XD

Also, I forgot to post a special screenshot that showcases my special pixeling abilities!

First attempt at custom graphics. XD Yeah.... I suck. ;_;

I will when I re-make it. It was a horrible, horrible world map. XD

it really loooks like you just made your own style of sprite, and that its your first attempt is interesting, I have to say im starting to really hate you cause there is no way I could do a char sprite that well from scratch dry.gif and ive been trying a LOT!

This keeps on looking better and better, though I assume you are going to change the bishop sprite? Cause with your sprite style it really clashes with the default RTP style.
Strawberry
This is mainly something I'm doing when we work on the game. The demo will most likely have RTP, but as I finish more and more pixel work, we will transfer everything to the new graphics. Which includes the bishop sprite. XD

So yeah, everything will change.

I'm learning.

Also, my fiance made the sprite templates, I just put clothes and stuff on them.

I did make the rest of the tileset, though.

I'm aware that it's not very good, but I'm trying. XD
Strawberry
So I was messing around with logo design myself and came up with this:

It's what I want, but it doesn't.. pop out at me. ;_;

Another original song for the OST. XD

I've decided to go ahead and play around with the idea of your logo. Here is the result. happy.gif

Strawberry
It says I don't have permission to view it.

I wanna see it!!! XD

I'm going to call you "Exy" from now on! biggrin.gif
X-M-O
What? Exy? XD
Love it.

Oh, I guess the permissions aren't set for uploads in this area.
I'll upload it to a different location and repost - just a minute. ^^

Edit: There we go!

"Oooo, that's gorgeous!"

That's exactly what I said out loud.

Thank you Exy! You're the best!

I mean really.

/cry

I shall use it! It's simple and what I wanted! :3
X-M-O
Yay! happy.gif

You're very welcome; especially since you're going to use it. wink.gif

It's very easy for me to take an idea (so clearly represented as you have done) and turn it into something shiny! ^^
(I also wanted to remove the redundancy factor that most logos have nowadays - where all of the music notes are the same or are duplicates of each other; I made sure they are all different in your logo.)

First attempt? That's pretty darn awesome for a first, considering my first attempt would have looked like something from a first generation atari system. I'm assuming it's a WIP since the area in front of the fireplace is so wide and open, but not something that a few housing items can't fix (a table with a chair, some shelving, etc).
Strawberry
Yeah, I haven't finished all the objects. I've been so lazy to continue - even if it's a good thing to have custom graphics. XD
Dragoncookie
look, it's that time of the week when Cookie feels like critici... critisi... criticising? uh... however that's written.
OK, it IS pretty great for a first attempt, but, on the beds, there's a lot of pillow-shading (darker on the outside, lighter as it goes in.) You shouldn't do this even on pillows XDD Also, on the pink bed, the lighter shade doesn't really blend in with the base color.
You don't need to be afraid to use more than two colors on the wooden boards! Also, no need to always use the same measures (Eg. two pixels dark shade, two pixels light shade) since that also tends to look a lot like pillow shading.
Surfaces that are flat are always the same color, and when it goes up/down it changes the shade (depending on the lightsource)
The fireplace's a great example, even though the lighter dots seem a little random.
Also, you should use a lighter coloring for the dithering on the wall.

...I feel so mean, sometimes.
Strawberry
Nah, you're fine.

I'm no pixel artist. XD I was doing it for fun, mainly and because my fiance told me to. >>

But I most likely will not continue it anyways, 'cause I don't want to waste my time doing something I'm not good at. ^^;
