OK so i'm trying to get into spriting, or at least be a novice in it cause trying to find one is just not gonna happen happy.gif , this is a sprite for my roman rpg game, he is a roman infantry soldier. He is a heavy edit of the default knight/solder from xp. I think he looks ok, passable for use in a game but then again I dont really know much about spriting so I thought i'd ask the ppl that do, so tell me what you guys think, tips and all feedback welcome.

I think you did a great job with the editing. I'm not sure what you could do with the helm if you wanted more of a Roman look to it. That would need somewhat tedious editing, but it still looks nice enough! What do you use to edit?
Lato
I use photoshop 7, I used to use gimp for edits but its acting weird now. The helmet is a bit tricky cause the romans used so many differnt kinds, then again this makes it easyer when i want to make the differnt class helms but still. Im gonna copy this one and add a plum on the helmet to make a general sprite. Thank you I think it looks good to, but I did spend ALOT of time on it, like 3 or 4 hours. But this gave me the perfect template for the rest of my roman solder sprites so my game is going smoothly.
Holder
Nice work with that Lato smile.gif Glad to see others getting into spriting.

Firstly I'd recommend getting a toned down program to do spriting work, since Photoshop and Gimp can be a bit overpowering with all the options and features which aren't needed and use one with useful features. I use Graphics Gale because it's simple and has some very useful tools to help make spriting easier.

When I first opened that sprite I noticed that you've got some transparent parts which shouldn't be: Right leg first frame, helmet on the last row frames one and three.
I think it would be useful to you if you copy and paste another frame in a new layer above the one you're working on, as I noticed the helmet gets brighter when the character is facing up, and to save trouble copy over the helmet onto the other four frames, since that wouldn't move or differ as the character walks.

Can't wait to see more smile.gif
Nanashi
You lost me in that, so now I'm scared to sprite:(

Though I thank you, Holder. I can try and use Graphics Gale since I thought GIMP 2 might be too much for a sprite, myself.

Strange I didnt notice the transparent parts, but then again I was walking around in a black and white faded backgroud so ill riun him again, as for the helmet shinning i thought that was a cool effect and shows off the metal as he walks, kinda more realstic. Thanks for the feedback, think im gonna get into spriting more now that I can actually make a good one lol.

Yeah need to make the archer next, I think im just gonna thin out the helmet alot, still thinking about it, then I gotta start doing the barbarian sprites, which reminds me, get back to work on my battlers Nanashi! tongue.gif

Bump/Update Ok I tried to make this look clean when I updated this topic but when I went to put in my icons it saud the Admin wont allow links from photobucket sooooo I just had to add my new stuff to the first post, so yeah...

ANYWAYS I hope you guys like the new stuff!
Lato

Ok I put these up YEARS ago but touched them up a but since then, there just a sample for now I can make them more gruesome. Anyways I think its weird we have all these horror games and mature games but all the dead bodys dont look dead, they all look like they are peacefully sleeping, so I showed a variety of injuries and missing body parts/blood so your games will look more real. What you guys think?
kaz
I like them - like you say it is rare to see "realistic" dead bodies- where as you have random poses, which is how it should be.

Plus in a sword fight for example, limbs would be lost.
kayden997
Ratio's off.... Or in other words: it's too small

Which one? I put some of them in my game and they work just fine.
kayden997
Oh, nvm just messed up on something.
Lato
Ok this is my very first time messing with the cool RPG maker 2003 battlers, I took the samurai and really trimmed down the fancy helmet, made him into more of a basic soldier for the army. Of course hes not finished yet, if I make him a main hero ill add something but if its just a normal soldier I think this will be good.
Holder
Trimmed down the fancy helmet? You removed the horns and cut the back of the helmet...

For some reason you've actually saved it as .jpg also I'm not sure if it's just the fact that it's no long .png but the colour saturation is horridly low for 2k3.

On the status pose you've left a bulk of black when you've cut down the white section, try giving it more of a shade.

Thats the default my PS saves it on when I save a edit, they work great ingame, you think it reduces the color quality? I never noticed a difference. The helm was just to fancy for what I want, yeah my games all have fantasy to it, but big horns that are half the size of the helm itself is just a bit much and it was to back heavy, though ill have to double check this white section your talking about might have missed it.

And holder check your mail!! I pmed you.

Edit- yep I saw that extra black lol good eye I fixed it, just not posted it, im gonna post it when I do more to it.
Lato
I did my first 2003 battler!!! I love using RPG Maker 2003 so much im making a game with it and here is the main bad guy Rasputin!

The most evil monk in history mauahahaha! What you guys think?
X-M-O
Wow, you did that yourself? ohmy.gif
I love the outfit. Definitely a monk. tongue.gif

It looks great! Do you have plans to make other stances/forms?

Well its a heavy edit, I made him fit the time period and gave him the orthodox cross staff, so it actually looks alot like him happy.gif
the cool thing about 2003 is they have a built in transform option right in the monster battle setup so it might be cool to make other stances for him, like the snail in FF 6 lol. I probley will but right now im just getting the whole cast togather, right now I custom edited the whole cast battlers and sprites and testing out a few maps, the maps are so much harder to do in 2003 i think dry.gif but ill get there.
kayden997
Wow! Most evilist monk in the world.
You got me hyped up about 2003 now biggrin.gif
These are great, Lato! I can't wait to see more!

Then feast your eyes on this! He was known as the puppet master of Russia, this is one of the Russian soldiers under his trance control! I even did a cool black and white Russian movie/cutscene for the game and it works great, im thinking about putting them throughout the whole game happy.gif but i wont share that just yet. 2003 is so cool wish I had used it first all those years ago.
X-M-O
Yeah, 2003 is definitely not an abandoned piece of software - there are a lot of 2003 users, and many resources and tutorials for making games in it. =]

The soldier almost looks drunk (I guess being drunk makes you look weak like that soldier, lol), but you did a good job on him. happy.gif

Well yeah hes a puppet slave with no will of his own happy.gif which actually fits the historical facts pretty well. Im doing the events right now, but doing the battlers is by far the most fun, well the movie was but its all good.
xtian3426
awesome puppet sprite smile.gif

though he doesn't look like a puppet more like a zombie soldier tongue.gif

Ok here is some differnt stuff I did, sooner or later im gonna actually submit these but for now im kinda just showing this and that.

This was my first airship and it turned out great, I did a default staff edit and its now my fav staff:) I tried to make a keyblade cause for some reason ppl love kingdom hearts lol
kayden997
Nice airship. Although, it seems too blue for me (Que Eiffel 65). But still, that's really awesome. Did you do it from scratch or used a reference?

For the keyblade, I would make the handle a bit shorter, yellow metal, and a 'handle grabbing' area (can always search it up) Still, looks nifty none the less.

I used a reference for the airship, wasnt to sure about it, i dont really like using them because I dont do future games, but its good to try things out. I dont like keyblades but maybe someone can use it and like it.

Hmm...your Pixel art es Ok nothing to mouth dropping not.....I like how u altered the wand/staff above the key blade thing is so smexy
=3= hmmmm can u pixel a tree from scratch?.....I'm interested in see-ing something like that.(Not a request just curious)

You know I never actually tried that, ive been meaning to try and make a custom map tileset for awhile now, I might try that next.
Lato
My god this took sooooooo long to do! dry.gif Thanks to my last pixel artist that ended up growing female parts and quitting his job I am left with the wonderful job of pix/sprite work yah!

This is Drusilla, one of the main char to my new game, the hair took me a good hour to do...
Lato
Bump/update

Ok this is the first full tileset Ive ever tried to do, exerbrus started a few of them but never edited/cleaned them up for use so im doing the very long job of doing it in PS, this is just one of them that I have done so far, its still being worked on, and is NOT for USE.

So what you guys think?
Holder
Personally I'd say you need to look at the perspective of tilesets, I assume this is for RM. You need to slightly show the top of the objects.
Try referencing the actual tiles.

Yes as I said before they are unusable now, im only cleaning up the edges and filling in spots here and there, if I actually knew how to make a tileset from scratch I would have made many by now. This is going to be a VERY slow process while I clean them up as I cant seem to find anyone to hire to complete them.
Holder
It's not a case of the edges or filling, what I was trying to advise is that the angle of the tiles themselves are facing directly forward. The player would be looking at them from almost a 45 degree angle.

I know how long it takes to learn to do tilesets I've been there, what I am trying to do is help you. You'll find out why it's hard to find people who'd do this because it is hard to do, like as you said they'd be many made by now.

I am ONLY doing the edges and fillings, so that when I DO actually find someone that knows about the rest then they will be ready that much faster. As far as learning how to make a tileset I havent even tried to start one, though that does sound like fun. BUT i have used these in game and I like them, they have a much more limited use then other sets but add a differnt feeling to the world when you walk around in one, now that im cleaning them up they will work even better. im not going to change the angle of anything as I dont know what the artist was thinking so im not gonna guess, all I know is its beautiful art happy.gif and thats why im Art Staff, funny how that works out.
Kaleb Daub
I have been looking at your work in this thread and I will say this these are some of the best things I have seen on this site your stuff is really awesome I really like how you did Rasputin.

Why thank you happy.gif its good to have your work admired. I have been trying out a lot of differnt things lately and just love posting them, these tile sets though are really gonna be something special when I get them done, ppl forget that most great art takes time, this is why im the art staff I guess cool.gif and I love what I do. Rasputin was a special job, editing battlers is by no mean a easy task, and I wanted him historically accurate as well. He turned out great! I can only hope that the rest of the battlers I do turn out just s good. its going to be hell when I try and do a 2003 tile set.

I need to do/post more of my char art though cause thats what im the best at, I had no idea I was so good until I ran out of ppl to hire lol. such is life though. Keep in mind im open to requests as I love RRR!
Kaleb Daub
haven't used 2k3 but this is stuff cool for its area I don't really know of any other people making actual historical things.

Yeah im kinda the history buff here on RRR, all my projects tie into historical events. Guess its just my thing, anyways here is another tileset from the new series im working on.
Kaleb Daub
so these are 2k3 tile sets looks looks like something you would see in a children's Chinese animated movie almost. look good still I haven't worked my way up to making tile sets yet.

No these are for XP, and when I say that I mean ive only used them in XP lol, I have no idea how well they would work in 2003 happy.gif though I might try them out in it once I have them finished. This style of tile set has been very successful in the game Rainbow town of blood, so I thought id give it a try, sadly its still a work in progress.
Kaleb Daub
well I think they are quite unique and good for their type I haven't really used XP but when I get some more money I am going to buy it I only own VX and ACE. So I didn't know what the format was, but still excellent work hope that I cant get to your level some day.
Lato
Ok I have been doing some more sprite work, don't want to get rusty and I still need some for my game so I found this really cool char sprite in the resourse section here by Holder. I made it a lot less godlike and more for general use, I trimed the beard so he doesnt look like a hobo and made the eyes darker, I also changed the mouth to make it look like he is actually talking /preaching! happy.gif Its for use just be sure to give credit to Holder and myself.

Here is also one from the res section, this one is just a recolor of the default soldier sprite, though I did fix up the eyes cause they were just a bunch of the same pixel color I added a new color in there.

Ok this one was a real pain in the ass, its a heavy edit of the default angel, not such what else I want to do to it if anything, I made it to be the main bad guy of my game, still a work in progress.
bacon
The bald guy's head and body look big when compared to the other characters. I know it is probably a different template but it would definitely be neat to see all of them proportionally the same (and would help people using it)! Good job on everything else above.

Yeah Holder has his own styles, I prefer a more default XP sprite style, I am trimming down his head a lot now, but since I only need the front view of him thats all im editing since its only for my game.

I redid one of my old armors and im quite proud of it, its much better, I made the neck line much more realistic and also added in a chest crest also added in some shading.

These are not to be posted on any other site, this is for RRR only, credit me:)

I edited the default wolf of the RTP, I made it to wear he doesnt have on those stupid pants, I mean why would a wolf creature wear pants?? Also I gave him red eyes, might use him in my game, feel free to use it, just give credit.

Behold my best armor! My Roman segmented armor!

I edited a ship sprite I saw, slimmed it down a lot, i think it was way over the top, to victorian, I shortend the sails and slimed the tips, did some blending. I am trying to make a more Roman ship, but as this was the first ship I have ever done this one is just practice, enjoy:)
Lato
Ok I have been doing some more edits here and there, wanting to do more stuff with maps/tiles sets and such. I edited the shop graphics signs, I made a roman style plaque and took out the "item" from the item back so it could be used by differnt cultures, also make the horse stand alone with no bars so it could be used easy. I used the roman one in game and it looks great! Lets get some feedback!

I got bored and decided to edit some item icons, I dont like the default because they all seem medieval period/style, so I made some in a earlier style, much simpler with less jagged points to break the bottle on.

Lato
Ok iv'e been getting a lot more confident in my spriting abilities, so I decided to try and really make my Roman Galley, and it is kicking my ass! But there is progress! The 2nd row is the one I have been working on, tell me what you guys think so far.

Glory to LATO! I have never even seen a historical period WORKING char boat and now I have made one! This was really hard but I tested it out in game and it amazing, the sails even change to show the differnt wind strength/direction and the boat sways with the waves!!! This is NOT for use or to be posted anywhere else without my permission. Just wanted to show you guys my skills are getting a lot better! woot.gif
Lato
OK guys I have a real treat for you today, once again I decided to do something that no one has EVER done, a TROOP TRANSPORT! Or you can use it for a food transport, all you have to do is copy and paste what you want in the transport. Im going to make a war chariot next but if you guys want me to keep making these let me know! No feedback no cool pixel art! Not for use without my permission.

Ok here is a teaser! Behold my Roman chariot!!! Found nowhere else in the RPG world! AHAHAHAHAH
X-M-O
That's brilliant!
Though I think the chariot is a bit small to require two horses. wink.gif
Make it larger! =D

Also, you should make the horses two different colours (just because they are both grey and a brown one would make it look less like a copy/paste). ^^
