Full Version: Using resources

Hi,

I stumbled across rpgrevolution.com browsing the web for sprite sheets to use in my own game.

Now, the resource section is full of excellent stuff, but as far as I can see, no resource is accompanied by a license (Creative Commons / All Rights Reserved / Public Domain / whatever).

How do I know what I can do with these resources (e.g. putting them in my own non-commercial / commercial game)? huh.gif

Thanks,

fberger

If people post resources they have made, you'll be able to use those resources in non-commercial games. As for use in commercial games, it's best to ask the copyright holder.

Good to know, thanks. Still, it would be good to have an explicit license next to each resource (like at OpenGameArt, see for example http://opengameart.org/content/allacrost-l...-64x128-pixels) or at least in the footer of the resource page (like at OpenClipArt).

If there a board to file forum suggestions? wink.gif

EDIT: fixed broken link

This board. I don't think setting any restriction of posting resources is encouraging though.

It of course is not. I was rather thinking about something like an option list:

Please choose a license for your resource:

o no explicit license (contact author)
o All Rights Reserved (most restrictive)
o Creative Commons - non-commercial use
o Creative Commons - commercial use
o Public Domain (most permissive)

with "no explicit license" even being the default option.

Right, but I don't think we should force people to do that.

Yeah Rob_Riv is right, it's a bit pushy. If a license is not mentioned, you can use it for non-commercial use. Same goes for every resource on the web. But if you want to use it for a commercial product, you should ask the original producer.
