I'm trying to make a war game for rpg maker xp, but i can't figure out which kind of battle system to use, whether it's a abs, or tbs, or side view or whatever. definetly not using the rmxp default. any suggestitions would be greatly appreciated. thank you!!!

A tactics battle system is always good in a war game. There's a number of engines capable of doing war styled games with unique engines. IMO Best engines for war are tactics.
HOWEVER you could completely event an engine that does war styled games. Something like a rock paper scissors styled event system or any number of variants during a war scenario involving a multtitude of troops, Can even combine the DBS with an evented battled system. (I've done something like this for RM2K3)
In the end the battle system is going to be your call and your call only. It's part of making your decisions for design, and you should have a pretty good idea of what engine will fit best in your game.

If you need to ask other people about the battle system for your own game, tell you what, you're never going to finish this project. Move on.
