The Magnus Light is a game I've been working on for more than a year or so now. It's an upgraded version of Story of the Year set in the same diegesis, Treter. However the story is much different and more serious than before aiming to please target audiences who are fans of such games like Final Fantasy, Breath of Fire and Tales of a Series. All these games are direct inspirations of The Magnus Light. The games objective is to please newcomers to rpg games and those who crave an interesting story as well as a challenge. It has a non linear based narrative structure with quite a few subplots that also focuses on quests as a way to engage in more subplots for players to have more of an understanding of the setting.

STORY

The Magnus Light is set in the fictional fantasy world of Treter. A world filled with legends, myths, many creatures, some diverse races and what the game would refer to as magica which is a prospect that makes the planet function. The story starts of in Nua which is said to be the most prestigious continent on Treter in terms of military strength. Unfortunately Nua is at civil conflict from a rebel group known as Sarz. No one knows why Sarz would want to break the peace in Nua and it is believed they are being truly led by an unknown cult. It is now clear that the Nuan government knows there are people secretly working internally trying to overthrow the King.
The story focuses on the main protagonist Magnus Croid, a descendant of a once dominant and ruling clan known as Magnus. Young Croid is a mercenary who gets reluctantly recruited by the Royal Family. This is to protect the princess who's life is threatened by rebellion forces due to reasons restricted. However, this isn't the first time Croid has done a mercenary job for the King. He meets some old faces and makes some new friends whilst embarking on a quest as the guardian of Nua's most important asset.

YOUTUBE TEASER VIDEO
Check out this youtube teaser video I uploaded a long time ago. It gives you an idea what is expected to be in the game although the recording was bad quality. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6s9zRmnWNlk

These are some videos I made about the work in progress of the project. A lot of the clips were made a long time ago but I finally decided to upload them. The first video is the newer more updated one where as the second was uploaded a long time ago.

The videos are a bit laggy but gives you an idea what to expect.
Desa
This game looks good, altough you shouldn't place silver rocks on "brown rock" places, but ypu decide.
The battles should have good backgrounds.

I think I could help you with this fast reply smile.gif

BTW it's a promising game and keep working on it!
slayer1213
This game is really great and looks fun. but i do agree with Desa on the rocks and background. why not make the backgrounds like on the spot you encounter the enemy? or maybe background of the terrain. but good game and good luck on it =]

Thanks for the replies. I'll look into it. I've actually nearly finished the 1 and half hour demo but final scenes are going to be quite long to develop and test. I will be working on uploading the demo after my final exams on the 7th of June. It's taking a while to update the thread and I am working on so many other projects too... thumbsup.gif

THREAD UPDATE
This is a quick teaser video of some of the work in progress of The Magnus Light from a while ago. The map for the epic battle at Nua gate has been slightly changed though.

This video was uploaded a more than a year ago so its outdated but gives you an idea what to expect from the project. There are some slight changes since...

I've also added Hemphia as a character now so information can be read about her. thumbsup.gif

Having been working much on this game lately so I thought I'd add some minor history to it. These characters probably will be mentioned somehow or another in the game. Some of them may appear in the flashbacks as part of the non linear element.

Some scripts I've been working on:
Spoiler
King Jamaya: What is the boy’s name?
Soldier: Magnus your majesty, Croid Magnus.
King Jamaya: Magnus you say, that name belonged to Jase, the King of old.
Croid: And father of my father.
King Jamaya: It’s an honour to stand before a King. Treat this man with high respect.

I just thought I'd add that the thread has been slightly updated again. I created a small teaser video of the game showing some of the the work in progress. Please tell me what you think. biggrin.gif

kunitaj
Is that an overdrive script i see? Where did you find that?
amerk
LMAO at the ogre's ass. That was freaking awesome... and gross. All joking aside, this looks pretty interesting, and you seem to handle the mapping well.
obsorber
Thanks I guess lol. By the way the overdrive script is KGC's Overdrive script. Can't really remember where I got it from as this project as been under development for more than a year now.

THREAD UPDATE
I now have demo available for The Magnus Light. It's a small run through of what to expect lasting 1 hours 30 minutes opening up the plot. There are quests available, some that have to be done whilst others are optional. Also the game has 3 challenging bosses to face. You may notice some changes may be made to some of the scenes, maps and possibly characters later when the full game is released. I intend revamp the intro scene and make it longer once I have done more of the story so the scenes can relate to the future parts of the game. Please download this demo and post me some feedback if you want as I am interested in the pros and cons. The download size is 64 MB. Thanks your help would be appreciated.

THE CONTINENTS IN TRETER

Nua
The Nua Empire is a human realm that has the largest and most powerful army in the world. The continent was named by Magnus Zarkodius who became a powerful warlord at one point in his life. Magnus Zarkodius established trade routes between the three countries and ran the Brooklyn Realms. He decided to combine the 4 countries, Brooklyn, Yama, Benvrais and Raynor into one continent so that it was easier to identify where the trades were going. Almost a century later, Magnus Dugal, Zarkodius's descendant took over the whole Nua realm to bring peace to the nation forming allegiances to save their lands from vicious fiends. Today, the Nua nation is governed by King Jamaya who took over the throne when Magnus Jase forfeit his title as King. The most common job in Nua is a soldier or guard for males. This is because the government wants to keep it's countries safe from fiends and other enemies.

Shinda
This race mainly consists of humans and is the most technologically advanced race in the world. Years back during the age of fiends, Magnus Dugal wanted to take over Nua to protect it from an uprising of fiends and monsters. Freud Sigmund a clan leader of his time argued against him. Instead of fighting Magnus in war, he decided to give up his territory in Yama. He felt that there was no point fighting if he had two enemies to face, Magnus and the fiends. Sigmund got on his ship and disappeared into the south alongside with many of his loyal followers and those who opposed and disagreed with Magnus's ambitions. They ended up in the cold lands of the world which wasn't filled with too many fiends at the time. It was here that Sigmund would name this territory Shinda. Being a genius, Sigmund was able to create high technological housing, water systems and use magica as energy to run the society. Shinda grew into a continent ran by energy from magica. Many years later, almost everyone in the population was trained into alchemists, those who have the ability to manipulate the earth and the wind. To secure his lands he made alliances with Dugal's son, Magnus Jase so he could set up trade paths for his people. Sigmund later died years after. Without no leader the government to had to elect a President who would be the people's choice. Favored by all, Menestril Thillis also referred to as Menethil became the it's new ruler.

Casia
Casia is the land of the elves who live on magica. They are peaceful race that love nature and live away from humans not valuing their lifestyle. The elves are a wise and honorable race. They are also immortal and can live forever unless they are killed otherwise. Some believe Magnus Zarkodius got his immortality from them as none of the Magnus descendants have aged after growing up to a certain age. The are led by wise Emperor Linus. Linus once fought with Zarkodius in a duel when a group of Nuan soldiers docked in Casia to discover the land. It was a battle of honor which occurred instead of countless men and fellow elves losing their lives. Linus had never met a warrior who could match his strength and before he knew it he was overpowered by Zarkodius's Resoken. Defeated by Magnus, Linus befriended him and let him and his troops return home. Casia was now an explicit ally of Nua although hardly any trade routes were established between them. Recently a few elves have recently migrated to Shinda to start a new life and were welcomed by Thillis, it's President.
Milonar
I'm a bit surprised when this Project has few comment. I have played your Demo. Everything looks good. The story is pretty intesting for me, it makes me continue to play. Hahaha, I spent over two hours to play Magnus Light non- stop! The battle is quite challenge. If I don't act fast, the boss will kill my characters biggrin.gif. Your maps look decent for me, but it isn't too bad.

Keep up the good work and update more. I will wait for the next Demo.
obsorber
Wow, thanks Milonar. I didn't think anyone enjoyed this game because of the lack of comments. You played the whole 2 hours + straight ohmy.gif , I guess I must have done something right. One of my aims was to try and keep that feeling off addiction to the player so they would want to carry on. The next version will be released as The Nua Saga. Basically disc one of the entire game.
amerk
With so many games available, it's hard to comment on them all, but I gave this one a test drive and can Milonar that it is an enjoyable game. The story is written well enough, and the mapping is easy on the eyes. Enemies are properly balanced in terms of damage vs rewards gained, and I didn't see too many problems.

A couple of gripes, though:

1. At level 5, it's still tough for my characters to act first in most battles. You'd think I'd be able to wipe out level 1 slimes in a couple of seconds when I'm at level 5.

2. You move way too slow on the world map. I can understand eliminating the run feature, but I'd consider giving normal speed to accomodate for this.

Edit: Sorry, meant "concur with Milonar".
obsorber
Thanks Amerk for playing the game. As you can see, the battle difficulty isn't stat based. Basically Croid's stat's will never increase dramatically by leveling up. Take this for example, Croid at level 1's HP is 100 and at level 99 is 400. The game requires you to buy new weapons and equipment for your characters if you want to do more damage and have an advantage in stats. Try buying a Bastard Sword, probably the most expensive sword you can purchase at the moment and Croid will be doing way more damage. Thus leveling up is probably best so you can increase speed stats and gain an edge in battle. I simply did this so that battles would either always be challenging and require some slight thought to defeat enemies quickly. Don't worry though, your characters learn more powerful and useful skills on the way which will make battles easier too. dry.gif
I did this because the game is heavily quest focused too. I want the player to rely on quests, mining and fishing to make a lot of money which will be used to buy equipment that will make characters more dangerous to enemies. cool.gif
About the world map, that might be changed for disc one release depending on how many people don't like it. I didn't see it as a huge problem because I personally like the slower small graphic moving on world map.
amerk
That actually makes some sense. I bought the kris sword (not sure how it's actually spelled) because I think it was the most powerful at the time, but didn't take speed into the equasion.

How does that make the battles challenging and require thought to defeat enemies? Your advice was to buy "probably the most expensive sword".
obsorber
Because to really get stronger you will need to buy new equipment. You can still win battles without new equipment but battles are more challenging because the player can't just rely on grinding to dominate foes. That is what I am trying to point out. Plus enemies should use more powerful skills the higher your level so the game expects you to have certain equipment at least so you can be ready for it. Thus weaker enemies will still pose a small threat due to progression.

This game will be on haitus till late January. I got tons of exams to prepare for so I won't have time to construct the Nua Saga. However, I'll pick off where I left off January ending after my exams are over. Disc One: The Nua Saga will be released sometime next year. I'm guessing around spring time. For now, please enjoy the demo release wink.gif

Got my exams coming up soon so picking up where I left off in 2 months time and getting back into some strict RPG Maker Development, Reviewing. Anyways I will be checking up on the forums every now and again. Back to the point, I wanted to ask you guys what features you'd like to see in this game?

There are Tons of items, Unique character skills and personalities, quests, flashbacks, fishing system, mining system(will be added), World Map Exploration, Special Attacks, and Magic Scrolls. thumbsup.gif

Demo Impressions -

The slow movement speed in the world map is fine, as long as you don't make land that's too big. Can't imagine traversing at that pace for long distances.

The story concept for two of the boss battles is refreshing. Never had to engage bosses in such a context before.

There were a few oddities I found; which I will post at the end. Mainly a dialogue and a graphical glitch that in no way hinders progression.

I enjoyed the concept of equipment as being a key factor in character progression, a change of pace from having to juggle both leveling and grinding for gear. (Although one and the same in the end).

The mage class that was introduced in the final boss battle was rather under-whelming. She was really frail XD.

I OHKO'd the ogre with an alchemy bomb 8D!

http://s426.photobucket.com/albums/pp341/X...ent=Magnus1.jpg

PS - I love the concept of steal in RPG's, but there weren't alot of items either on bosses or other-wise. I even reloaded save files for the boss fights just to see if they carried any exceptional gear, but alas! I also noticed that even if an enemy/boss carries nothing: steal can still "attempt" to work, but you never know if they have anything until it succeeds.
obsorber
Thanks for playing the game, the Mage is meant to be weak in defence, health and strength, you'll probably need to use skills to protect her like barrier or something later. However her magic damage pays off. It's in early stages, there will be alternatives to customize your characters and get them away from thier weaknesses as I carry on developing it. Yeah, The Magnus Light seems to be my most unique project under development that I have released in terms of the cut-scenes. Also the early bosses aren't meant to be too hard to get the player use to playing the game.

All bosses have something to steal in this demo release by the way. May not be exceptional items but you can still steal an Item of the sort from them. I tested the steal ability and made pretty much all enemies have something to steal but the chances aren't always high and it depends on the type of item your trying to steal and what monster you are trying to steal from. Some monsters are easier to steal from and some Item's are more rare to find during stealing. You also can't steal more than one item which truly does suck because the steal script system doesn't support this. The reason I did this is because it makes stealing more difficult so the player later on when looking for monsters with certain items can prepare for final bosses will make it a challenge to gather them such as magical scroll's and special items that are expensive to sell etc.

At the moment there has been little work on this game, I've progressed on to develop another section of it and it seems like I'm around half way to complete the Nua Saga which is probably the largest chapter of the game. Also many quests have been introduced. However, at the moment I'm currently doing some work on the revamp of Project Viral, working on a new game too, and Combat Specialists. I do intend to finish this game though. I've just decided to take a break from it for a while as I believe when developing a game becomes more of a chore rather than enjoyment then you're not pouring your heart and soul into it.

(The Game is Now 3 Hours Long at the moment) (Brooklyn City, Brooklyn Docks, Brooklyn Forest, Magnus Tower, Brooklyn Farms, Lavu Mountains are all currently finished in development with their cut-scenes, quests and etc.) (Need to finish some more flashback sequences.) (Then continue to the next section of the game in development.)
