So I've got it, and played it upto where Rydia joins you.
The menu isn't special or anything, this is what it looks like:

The game looks as if it could be remade in RM btw, a lot of is very similar:
4 Map Screenshots

So far the game looks great, even look at this screenshot from where Rydia joins you, the city in the middle of desert

I can't help but nitpick at the tiniest things right now.. I'm used to it being in 3D and I have no complaints about it being 2D now, but I think Kain and Cecil's sprites look a little bit weird, and their combat animations are really awkward, I've never seen anyone tap the air with a spear, their attack animations only have 2 frames
2 Battle Screenshots

If I didn't know any better, that looks exactly like RMXP, maybe with slightly altered RTP. Would the designers REALLY be that cheap though? ... IDK.

I got the collector's edition yesterday and it's my 3rd one, the others being Final Fantasy XIII collector's edition and Dissidia II collector's edition biggrin.gif With it, u get a cleaning cloth with a character design on it, there's a few art cards and a redeemable code for a bonus costume for Cecil in Dissidia II biggrin.gif

There's something I don't understand. In Interlude, the characters start of around level 30 and in the main final fantasy game, Kain and Cecil starts of at level 10, but the other characters start at level 1 confused.gif What's going on here?
Shadyone
Yeah I know, the collector's edition rocks biggrin.gif I also have FF13 CE and FF14 CE too. I'm not sure what the heck they were doing with starting the characters at lvl 1 when kain and cecil were lvl 10 o.O the battles are too easy.. you never get hit at the start, and on the psp the fights on the airships are done automatically.. he just uses a red fang and blue fang at the start and then it goes back to the crew talking.

That is exactly what I thought, maybe someone will try to do a FF4 remake?

Gaaah! I want to play it! They should release it on the PSN Store! Sometimes I really hate myself for buying a PSP Go

That's okay, you can spend the money you would have spent on yet another version of FF4 on Legend of Heroes: Trails in the Sky, which is a much better RPG than all three of these put together anyway. You probably already own some version of FF4 somewhere, and The After Years is... meh...

It's sort of pretty, but there's lots of niggling points, like the fact that Paladin Cecil's world map sprite and battle sprite have different hair styles and color schemes, so it feels unpolished and kind of cheap. It doesn't have that oh-so-good feel of the GBA port, nor does it try to do something different with the game like the DS remake did. It also seems to be even easier than the already fairly easy original game. Given the fact that FF1 and 2 are total cakewalks on the PSP (to the point where FF1 is pretty much completely ruined by it) this shouldn't be surprising. A difficulty select would have been nice. So far, the Interlude's story reads even more like a bad fanfic than The After Years did. I'd have to play more to get a fair assessment, but it certainly hasn't managed to tear me away from Trails in the Sky.

In short, I'm not very impressed.

Hold on, I need to calculate how many periods I need to properly express my shocked silence.

Is FF4DS the only version of any of the pre-VII FFs you've ever played?
Shadyone
No why? I've played FF6 biggrin.gif and if you include Mystical Quest (I think it was called) and Chrono Trigger, then those too. why?
MagitekElite
I've had it since its Japanese release (it had English) and I quickly loved it. I love that they brought it back to the 2d graphics, I didn't like the DS version much. It was okay, but this is far better. It feels more like Final Fantasy IV, and the ability to pick the old soundtrack and whatnot, is amazing.

And the addition of three games for the total price of one? Even better, and definitely worth it.

Yes they would be that cheap.

Have you seen FFI for the PSP? Looks like VX xD

I was playing this game last night and I got up to the part where Tellah joins the party. I looked at his level and he was on level 20, what the hell? So that's Riydia starts of at LV 1, Kain and Cecil at LV 10 and Tellah at LV 20. Edward joined, but I forgot what LV he was on.

This is the strangest FF remake that they ever made, who agrees? Of course, other people might agree there's other ones out there. But none the less, this is still great biggrin.gif
Kread-EX
There's nothing particularily strange with the starting levels. They're simply set according to the story: at the beginning of the game, Cecil and Kain are experienced knights, so they start at level 10 to reflect the fact they have battle experience, while Rydia is just a little girl who never fought before, thus starting at level 1. Tellah is an old, powerful sage, so he should start at high level - due to his memory problem, 20 is quite low actually. Edward starts low as well, because he's a bard not really used to battle.
But you know, this is often like that in other FFs too. Take FF8 for instance: Squall is a trained mercenary, so his starting level is 6 if memory serves right (while Quistis is 7, Zell 5... Seifer 9 or 10... meh something like that).

I only played the PSX version of FF IV so far, though and I agree that the graphics here have a little something of RM. It's funny.
Drkmttr2007
I guess it's not then laugh.gif and thx for clearing it up for us thumbsup.gif

Yeah I know it makes sense story wise but lol. I found Rydia's level to be annoying since she'd get 0HKOd all the time.

DUDE... are u serious only TWO frames ?? I would expect that from a fangame but from Square? JEEZ these ppl ... ah well I can't hate them for a few lame mistakes when they have put together some of the best stories of our era through their games, but still they SHOULD be hiring people who want to take every bit and byte of their games to the next level, especially when it comes to these classic remakes!!! sigh... I guess it wouldnt stop me from buying the game though, after what you guys listed, they have added some great features into this version thumbsup.gif

But after all thats said and done, I think hiring a few more hardcore and dedicated fans of the game to their development team would would have taken a good remake and made it truely epic!
Shadyone
Yeah only 2 frames (not for magic etc just for the attack command) just like the amount of fingers your avatar is holding up

This was typical of the first six Final Fantasy games in their original releases. You knew this, didn't you? Oh please say yes, because I don't want to feel old!

I believe that only the 3D remakes changed the animations and made the characters actually connect with enemies when attacking.

Um ok the maps seems ALOT like the RM maps... not that its a bad thing but wasnt the first version maps very differnt, this seems kinda strange, this is very xp style, did they actually hire/use somone that just used a xp engine??? I love the story so id buy this game just for the story. Still ive never seen a remake where the graphics are so suppisous.
Marche100
In case any of you didn't realize, this is a remake of one of the best RPGs of the 1990s. Final Fantasy 4 set the bar for every other RPG that came after it in many of its elements. In short, it became the standard template for RPG games.

Those tiles you see in the screenshots are updated tiles of the original game, which came out in 1991 and was re-released multiple times. Don't get the wrong idea. If anything, the tiles weren't made to look like RPG Maker whatever version tiles, if anything the RPG Maker tiles were made with the bar that Final Fantasy 4 set in mind. I know it's not a big deal, but the suspicion is unnecessary. Even if you don't believe in that, Final Fantasy 4 was made however many years before RPG Maker was even an idea. The people just did their jobs and updated the graphics from the original (and it's a fine job, indeed, those graphics look really good).

Anyways, on topic, I got through most of the original game of the Complete Collection after having already beaten Final Fantasy 4 multiple times in the past on other systems. It's a good remake. It's pretty much the same as the Gameboy Advance version except for the graphics, which in of itself was a good remake, so while it may not have updated a whole lot of the original game, it's certainly still a good game. The interlude isn't really worth it in my opinion. It's all just reused areas and monsters with a little bit of an unnecessary story thrown in the mix. I enjoy having the After Years at my disposal, though.

Edit: Also, just for the record, how in the world do those look like they're RPG Maker XP style? Those tiles are a completely different style. I don't see where there's any comparison whatsoever.
MagitekElite
I don't think he meant it looked like RM RTP, but the design does look a bit more RM-y tongue.gif
Marche100
Ah, well maybe that's a good thing. Those tiles would be useful as a custom tile set for RPG Maker.
