And that concludes the Electronic Arts Keynote. A brief summary:
*The stage was much simpler than Microsoft's panel, keeping it basic and fast paced all throughout. Really fast paced, too; some demos went by in 3 minutes, if even
*9 games were presented by 9 developers, one after another
*Led off with Mass Effect 3, which promised a similar system to Mass Effect 2, wherein choices you made or questlines you did in ME1 changed elements of ME2. ME3 promises to encompass choices from both
*Mass Effect 3 also gave us a brief combat demo, which ended with a kaiju-sized Reaper barrelling down on Shepard who was firing on it with a minigun mounted to a battle vehicle piloted by Legion. So at least it was a cool brief demo. No reference to the voice commands promised in the Microsoft keynote.
*Release date pushed back to March 6, 2012, almost entirely because of Kinect Support.
*Mention is given now, and throughout the show, of EA's new download system, Origin
*Need for Speed: The Run. Combines a Cannonball Run/Gumball Rally race from San Francisco to New York, with one foot escape sequences run by Quick Time Events. These on foot segments really up the silly, including the guy, on foot, apparently having a police airstrike called on him. Release date November 15th, 2011
*Star Wars: The Old Republic was announced next. After a brief introduction by Bioware CEO Dr. Greg Zeschuck, a full trailer made piecemeal of several other trailers we saw before was shown. No gameplay was included, but it managed to include some ridiculous visuals like a man dual wielded double bladed lightsabers, and Space John Marston. No release date was given, but it's projected for the 2nd half of 2011
*The next SSX game is announced with a grand scope of "Every major mountain range on Earth." Also, Marc, Elise, and Kaori confirmed. Not much was revealed, but more is expected after the keynote and in the coming weeks. Release date around January 2012
*FIFA 12 announced with gameplay features that apparently allow for player impact and player injury. No word if we get to see femurs sticking out legs, or feet going the wrong way around.
*FIFA trailer unveiled, with celebrity endorsements by Drake and Lil Jon. Lil Jon's quest to collaborate with everyone continues.
*The FIFA Football Club is also unveiled, as a cross platform, cross game hub and leaderboard system. Release date given for September 30 2011
*Ray Louis of the Baltimore Ravens, Peyton Hills of the Cleveland Browns, and Clay Matthews of the Green Bay PACKERS! come out to help announce Madden 12. Not much about the game is announced, so some are still in the dark whether or not it will be anything like Madden 11
*Peyton Hills mentioned as cover player for the game. Silent prayer given for him and the Cleveland Browns, given the curse now upon them. Release date August 30 2011
*Sims Social for Facebook announced. Trailer seriously starts heckling the keynote speaker, I swear to God
*Trailer also SERIOUSLY HURTS TO WATCH AND LISTEN TO OH MY GOD
*Curt Schilling, former pitcher for the Boston Red Sox and CEO of 38 Studios, assembles the dream team: Lead Designer Ken Rolston, Artist Todd McFarlane, and writer R.A Salvatore. Together, they bring us Kingdoms of Amalur: The Reckoning. If what they showed us was gameplay in that trailer, I could seriously dig the beat they set. Vague 2012 release date given.
*President of Insomniac Games comes out to reveal new IP, Overstrike. Only the trailer and obvious cutscenes are shown, but the game still looks like it could be a lot of fun. It certainly has fun with itself and has several genuinely funny moments. Also, it stars The Crimson Chin.
*Show concludes with announcement of Battlefield 3, which literally looks absolutely amazing, and seems to play really well too, apart from some peculiar frame skipping near the end during what could be an in game loading buffer. Open Beta to be released September 2011, and the game itself to be released in October.
Ultimately: It's still too early to call, but I think it's safe to say that EA blew Microsoft out of the water with this presentation.
Up next, the Ubisoft presentation at 2:30, which can be
