~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Hey there. I've always been interested in the idea of being able to compose my own music for videogames, so in 2010 summer after going to a Distant World concert and seeing mr. Uematsu in person, I thought: "Hell, why not." and began practising as soon as I got back home, with no real music theory base at all.
I borrowed a synth keyboard from a friend of mine and just jumped on the gun, spending all my days in my room, trying to make my ideas into some sort of songs. Lot of people suffered because of this, but I have got a lot of useful feedback, and I also hope it doesn't cease!
Nowadays I am composing soundtracks for two RM games, and am aiming to finish a few more after them. I hope to hit commercial some day.
Here is some works of mine:
This is a game soundtrack piece for a cartoony Wild West themed sidescroller game, made as a request. I wanted to make it sound a bit more lighthearted than the spaghetti westerns and bring some fantasy / game feeling into it.
The general structure took a few hours, but when I changed some of the instruments I had in there first, it took many hours to get some harmony back in there. I'm not entirely happy with how the pizzicato sounds, but as I started the song around it, I didn't feel like changing it. Maybe I'll try to fix it up a bit some day.
Below you can find some of my older works. Melodies, ideas, scrapped practices, etc. I'm most likely still going to use them later and turn them into proper songs in the future:
Here's a compilation of some of my old practices, melodies and song ideas.
I started to practice composing music for videogames in the summer of 2010. These are some of my past works to show some progress from my first song until the most recent ones. These songs vary from melody ideas to scrapped practices. They generally lack of proper structure, motifs, harmony and etc.
I am most likely still going to use these ideas in the future and create them into proper full pieces.
(Juicier bits are naturally towards the end.)
Hello Rei-
I had a listen to your Riding across the wastelands. I really liked the song. As you mentioned it's very lighthearted, not what you'd expect from a song with that title. When I first read the title I was expecting something more with a lonely feel. Since the wastelands usually are very barren. The song came off as very curious. I could imagine it also fitting for a early morning in the woods.
As for your old ideas, melodies and stuff; I quite liked pretty much all of them. I definately think you should finish most of them! biggrin.gif
Keep it up! Looking forward to hear more music from you!
Thanks for your support Stern! You're actually first one to post a reply at all in any forums I've posted my stuff onto. It's pretty frustrating how hard it is to get any feedback or comments on RM forums. In other hand, any sort of commentary from people making games is really nice as I'm aiming to create the music for games after all.
I can see that the sound of the pizzicato strings and some of the woodwind instruments might make think of a forest! Though, the rhythm you can hear the pizzicato play got the ispiration from when I was thinking what the movement of a horse running could sound like.
It's still always fun to hear what people imagine when they listen to the songs.
-Sigh- I'm using my sister's computer at the moment and her sound device is screwed. Is there any songs that you feel comfortable for public downloading? I would really like to hear your stuff.
Hmm, I checked for what I've got already uploaded in my locker at RMN. My newest piece was in there. You're free to download it, but I'd ask to not use it in any games and whatnot, at least for now as it's reserved for a soundtrack of upcoming RM project:
http://rpgmaker.net/users/Rei-/locker/Ridi..._wastelands.mp3
Here's other recent piece of mine. Also reserved for a soundtrack, but of a different game:
http://rpgmaker.net/users/Rei-/locker/04_B...ew_at_Night.mp3
It doesn't loop too well. It could probably use one more cue before repetition.
Found a few files at my Box account too, but they're pretty much broken WIPs:
I hear you. I'm in the same boat. It seems not a lot of people are as interested in game music as they are in Art/writing.
Bridgeview at night.
I love this song. I'm a sucker for the sad/eerie & mysterious sounding music (there's a reason why most of my compositions are in minor key, if you know what I'm saying). It felt like the chimes* was a bit loud at some points. That might just be my ears being weak though. Other than that it's a fantastic track. Good job smile.gif
*The instrument playing the melody, not sure it's a type of chime or not.
Keep it up :>
I must say your stuff is really cool! Bridgeview (which is an awesome name btw) is incredible. However, I do agree that the bells does tend to get a little loud at times, but aside from that this piece is amazing!
When I first listened to Riding Across the Wastelands, the first that came to mind was Wild Arms 3 O_o. I have no complaints about this one. Excellent work!
LoXinspiredbattle is another favorite. Though it ends abruptly, I assume that it was intended for it to loop?
Red Star Agency (another awesome name) was tense. Brought about a held hostage type scenario. Good job man!
Overall, you definately have your own style nailed down. It is unique and I think you should post more if can happy.gif
I also have two new pieces I posted in my music thread. I posted a live_demo version of how I make my stuff and a grand orchestra. You should go by and check it out. Also, if you would like, we can collab on a piece if you're interested?
If you're looking for some good chimes to work with, you can purchase these two VSTs:
Edirol Orchestral (which is the one I use)
and
ReFX Nexus (which I hear is far better than Edirol)
Hey, cheers for listening. Yeah seems, some of my higher sounds can be a bit jarring at times. I'm working on it though, by using a lower cutoff frequency and trying to mind the volume of individual notes.
Hey, thanks for checking out my stuff! Most of it is still work in progress, however.
You guessed right the inspiration source for "Riding across the wastelands" It was supposedly to be Wild Arms influenced with the light hearted take on what Wild West could sound like. Hence the pizzicato, too.
LoX inspired battle is a beginning for a battle theme, inspired by an RM game called Leaves of Xion. It's actually just cut abruptly because I never continued it further before moving onto other stuff.
Red Star Agency is a piece for cyberpunk soundtrack just like Bridgeview at Night. I have worked more on both of them since the versions I have posted here. I will probably end up fixing some of these tracks a lot as time passes by as they're part of larger soundtrack. It'll take time untill the entire soundtrack is complete and during that time I hope to develop much, so you'll most likely see better version of these songs and ideas in future.
Thanks for the VST recommendations, I have to check them out. I really need those chimes. As for collaboration we'll have to see how to possibly go about it!
As for any new stuff, I'm afraid I can't post tracks in public for a while as I'm mainly focusing on composing a soundtrack for game that its developers want to keep secret from the public until release. However, if anyone is interested to hear the soundtrack and help me by giving comments and critique on the tracks, I can do that privately! Just PM me in this case.
Some updates! I am currently working on two soundtracks, the new addition being the soundtrack of Disconnect, an rpg you can find here: http://rpgmaker.net/games/3258/
I will upload all the pieces for Disconnect soundtrack to my soundcloud profile as I finish them, which isn't the case I could go about my other soundtrack. This means you can find all the new pieces of Disconnect Original Soundtrack on my soundcloud page always as I finish them.
You can follow me on soundcloud here: http://soundcloud.com/matiasheimlander
I have also uploaded the battle theme which I finished for my other soundtrack: http://soundcloud.com/matiasheimlander/those-who-battle
I try to polish the pieces before uploading them to my soundcloud, but I still update the tracks with some fixes every now and then.
Updates on the Disconnect Original Soundtrack! 3 new complete pieces and the original world map theme has been updated to match the sound quality.
You can find all the new tracks on my soundcloud: http://soundcloud.com/matiasheimlander/sets
as well as on my youtube channel: http://www.youtube.com/user/MatiasHeimland...A497C6E562B9EC4
I also just got myself a new midi-controller keyboard. The difference it'll make to the whole process is hard to even describe, I believe (and hope!) It'll help a lot with coming up with melodies, with being creative andjust making the songs sound better and more catchy in general. I'm aware my songs so far sound somewhat the same, but I hope the keyboard will bring some change to this.
I haven't had a chance to utilized the keyboard yet, but in any songs I create from now on, I will!
Just spent some time listening to your musics - very nicely done, I must say! =D
You've a great skill in original composition. ^^
I enjoyed all of your music, but especially Afternoon in the Woods.
Keep up the good work, I will look for, and expect to listen to, your future submissions! =]
Fateliante
Wow ohmy.gif ...that's the only word that explains it all. I've really enjoyed listening to your tracks! Admittedly, after listening to all of your music, it gives much inspiration and complimentary alike to the compositions. Very radiant work! You capture the essence of the mood of the theme and it's often difficult "reading between the lines", especially difficult for a rising composer such as yourself. You're on a set and prosperous path and couldn't encourage you enough to keep at it. Definitely looking forward to future compositions! smile.gif
Can't agree with you more, X-M-O! Actually, Afternoon in the Woods reminds me a lot like the works of Atelier Nonta. If you don't know the composer, I'd advise to check the music out: Atelier Nonta
