YoYo Games have had a very busy 2010 and it’s taken us a year to update Game Maker 8, but we can now give you good news! Game Maker 8.1 is now almost ready, and coming real soon! It will feature the new update mechanism that has proven to be so popular with Game Maker for Mac, and this will allow us to deliver more updates, quicker in the future.

Many of you will be aware that we’ve grown the YoYo games team significantly in the last 12 months. To help pay for this we have decided to increase the cost of Game Maker, but we believe that current and future updates will continue to represent real value for money, and will continue to allow you to make great games, with a constantly evolving and improving product. So, for a limited time; until June 1st 2011, you will still be able to get Game Maker Standard, 8.1 for just $25 !

Game Maker Standard, 8.1 replaces Game Maker Pro, 8.0 and will be required as THE version for the Game Store publishing (which we are working on the opening very soon), and so we recommend everyone upgrades as soon as possible.

What does this mean for current Game Maker users?

If you are a new customer or currently using Game Maker Lite, you will be able to upgrade to the new Game Maker Standard 8.1 through our store. I might have, but I've been gone for 2 weeks, just got back home yesterday. XD

I'm definitely happy to see the update is coming soon. The two things I like are the map zoom and faster rendering at runtime. Now if we can just get a marquee tool for the maps, we'll be set.

I personally am liking the HTML features, since I learned HTML this year.

EDIT:
I swore I saw it somewhere....>:\
Mainly being able to put stuff on the web without download. Unless you can do that already, and I never knew about it. 0.0

yoyogames has the instant play feature on their site, but I'm thinking what they mean is you can get your game playable on your own site (or any site) much easier. They're trying to get GM available on more platforms since that seems to be the big thing. I'm not against it or anything, but I've always seen it as a tool to make games for PC. There's plenty of other tools out there for mobile game development.

So how do we upgrade GM8 to GM 8.1? Or is it still not out yet?
darkyoshi
It's not out yet. When yoyogames has it ready, they'll post on how to update. I'll try to remember to keep watch for it and announce it in this thread. Rukiri is on top of it a lot too it seems, he may beat me to it. XD

I dunno, I've been following garage games more as I was looking for an upgrade towards game maker. Of course then I found out the version I purchased last year isn't eligable for the source code I went "Friiiiich!!" Well $99 for an awesome 2D engine isn't that bad.

I really hope one day Game Maker will adopt a real programming language maybe something like delphi or even ruby or python.
darkyoshi
I don't have an issue with Game Maker having its own language. Torque is a great tool and it uses its own proprietary language as does Flash.

Slight shame about the price but they could easily up that to the $60 that RPG Maker sells at and still be completely worth it.

GM8.1 was released.
You can get it here.

Game Maker competes with Torque, go talk with the communit most if not all will say bad things about the RM engine being noobish.
Also a lot of GM users are Torque 2D users as well.

I much rather prefer GML, it's really easy to learn, and I find python is difficult to remember, coz I read over 100 page tutorial on it a little over a year ago and I couldn't remember enough of it to know where to start coding with it sad.gif
I still keep it installed since I like doing little things like sword = "A rusty old sword" for example.
