Hello there people!

So I thought I could make one of these threads as well to show some of the stuff I've made. The bad and the good.
Any pointers, tips or general feedback is greatly appreciated. If you just want to mock me for being bad, that's also okay

My personal favourite!

Music

Songs are sorted by date added

Reflective (Flashback)
This was meant for a sad flashback in the game, but the flashback wasn't sad enough to fit with this song : )
It's written by Jacob Sternborn

A Life Beneath (Not finished)
This one is still in progress. I'm not super happy with how the piano sounds. Mostly because I don't
like Fruity loops standard piano samples. Other than that, It's quite okay. It's written by Jacob Sternborn

A Life Beneath(Finished)
This is the finished version of the main theme of Beneath. It's written by Jacob Sternborn

A Piano-focused piece
This is a piece I quickly whipped up to try different sounds with my new Piano VSTi. The concert piano might not sound super together with the percussion, but it had to do for the moment. The song is written poorly by Jacob Sternborn

Steady March
Here's something I made after getting more used to the new piano sounds I got. Written by Jacob Sternborn

Mastering Agony
This piece was written for one of the more powerful scenes of Beneath, it might feel a bit repetetive, I don't know. What do y'all think? It's written by Jacob Sternborn

Recreation
This is after disastrous scene in Grace. Written by Jacob Sternborn

A Planned Death
I "doodled" a bit. This piece wasn't made specifically for anything :>

Waging War
I wrote this for the competition on R3. The theme was symphonic orchestra. It got 2nd place

Don't Look Back
A very upbeat march-inspired symphonic piece.

The Bells of Deceit
Morbid, Melodic and orchestral chimes ;D

A Life Beneath
The main theme of 'Beneath' remastered.

Woodlands
This one was made for RRR Exclusive resources.

A beat, bit by bit.
I found a few VSTs and dabbled around a bit, tried a few sounds, whipped this up in 10 mins-ish.

The Dwarven Forge
The Dwarves rallies to the sound of the march-like brass echoing through the great halls. It can be heard all the way to the Great Forge. The smiths bash their hammer to the rythm to keep the working spirit up.

Enchanted Meadow
It's quite short, but just as the other ones, it loops very well. Download is enabled here as well.

A Slow Day
This was meant for a forest village. But I suppose it could be used anywhere it fits really. Download is enabled.

Perspectives of Sacrifices
This is for Beneath. It's meant to portray the loss of something important for a greater cause.

Darker Recreation
This is a darker version of Recreation. It's used in the first important boss fight in Beneath

Never yield
The original title was "War" and that's the scenario it tries to paint. It still needs some work, but I can't say I feel like spending more time on it at the moment.

Obsessed
This is written for a certain scene/plot twist taking place in Chapter 4 in Redland.

Walk The Streets 4 out of 5
This was a piece by piece demonstration of how I make my compositions.[/b]

I'm sad, so I'll whistle for a bit.
For once I think it came out pretty nicely, not much more to say!

Ostinati-Classical Inspired
A piano-only piece that was made more like an experiment rather than a full song. Hence it's length.

Funk n' Death
I've grown weary of RPG-style fully orchestrated themes and I started working with other instruments. I have a few tracks similar to this one in the works. It mixes some elements of jazz/funk with more traditional sounds. It should be an insteresting listen.

The Amazing Me!
This was my submission for the RRR Music competition. Just thought I'd throw it into this post.

Killed by Curiousity
This was an attempt at making a freaky/creepy song, while keeping a very melodic feel. I intentionally avoided dissonance, with the exception of tritonus, of course! Not sure what I think about it yet, as the only sound samples I found for the voices/tools were different qualities, hopefully it's not too noticeable.

Love to hear what you guys think!
Stern
Here are a few more songs!

Valataus Theme
This is the theme for the main antagonist in Beneath, it's written by Rahul Chacko

Reflective (Flashback)
This was meant for a sad flashback in the game, but the flashback wasn't sad enough to fit with this song : )
It's written by Jacob Sternborn

All feedback is appreciated, the bad and the good kind smile.gif
Stern
Anyone had a chance to listen to anything yet?

Here's a new one.
Battle Theme 2
This is another Battle Theme. It's written by James Lennie.

Which one of the Battle themes do you guys like the most?

(Here is the first one if you missed it in the main post.)

/Regards
Knot
They're pretty cool! They all sound very Baldur's Gatish xD Which is a good thing. I think my favourite was Reflective and the 2nd Battle Theme was pretty good too. Although it feels like you could get a little more emotion out of it, the instruments seem a little robotic if that makes any sense. Anyway, it's sounding awesome so far - keep it up!
Stern
@Knot: Thanks for listening and giving feedback biggrin.gif. I'm happy you liked the songs. I understand what you mean with robotic, I think. It easily sounds a bit robotic when you're using instruments from a database instead of a live recording. Although a few of the songs probably need to be changed a little bit, thanks for pointing that out.

/Regards
TheBen
I suppose the first battle theme felt... loose, I suppose? I would try and clip the attack times on some of the background instruments, if that's possible. Also, I would add a bit more stuff to the first song - it was mainly a few spiccatto string arpeggios and some background sounds.

The second battle theme was really the better of the two. It had a lot more stuff going on, and was a bit nicer.

The Valatus theme was pretty imperial, with a good mellow horn-based melody. I liked it!
Reflective was pretty brilliant, but I would try to create a "strumming" effect with the harp's chords. You could probably do this with grace notes or, if you're using a sequencer that favors piano roll over traditional sheet music format, some 64th notes. All the other tracks were very good in particular.

As a general note, every single percussion sample I heard was General MIDI. I don't like General MIDI, especially when it's put into a song that has brillaint samples for all the melodic instruments. It might take a bit of cash on your part, but I would go and find some quality timpani, snare drum, and drum kit samples - FL Studio's default setup comes with all the samples of those you'll ever need (8 drum kits!), save for the snare drum.

I hope to see more of this from you guys - it's good stuff!
Stern
Thanks for the elaborate feedback it's greatly appreciated.

I think you're pretty spot on when it comes to the first theme, we're going to have to take another look at that smile.gif
I like the idea with simulating a strumming effect of the harp, gonna have to experiment a bit with that when I get home today.

As for the general midi percussion. This is very true. I'd like to see them as a placeholder for now, I do have some orchestral percussion samples (The timpani in the first Battle theme, is the only song I'm using that). I haven't played around a whole lot with the FL standard drumkits yet. Also the standard timpani in FL sounds awful tongue.gif. Luckily I have the one from EWQL.

Again, thanks for the feedback biggrin.gif

TheBen
You're welcome.

Here's something new!

A Life Beneath
This one is still in progress. I'm not super happy with how the piano sounds. Mostly because I don't
like Fruity loops standard piano samples. Other than that, It's quite okay. It's written by Jacob Sternborn

A random question:
Does anyone know any quality Piano VST plugins or samples? As I mentioned above the Fruity Loops ones sounds a bit 'meh'

/Regards
Stern
I finished the above posted song.

A Life Beneath
This is the finished version of the above posted song. It's the main theme of Beneath. It's written by Jacob Sternborn

Added all links to the mainpost smile.gif

Hewo! :3

Here's some new music.

A Piano-focused piece
This is a piece I quickly whipped up to try different sounds with my new Piano VSTi. The concert piano might not sound super together with the percussion, but it had to do for the moment. The song is written poorly by Jacob Sternborn

And also, Yay~for new piano VSTi's biggrin.gif
Shadyone
Hey that piano piece is pretty good biggrin.gif btw I have a question.. what's a piano VSTi?
Stern
Thanks for the comment! smile.gif (both here and on the youtube video)
VSTi is Virtual Studio Technology. I'm not super good at explaining how it works and how I use it but here's the wiki-page. The Piano one I'm using is called Pianissimo (video of it in action).

And a new song;

Steady March
Here's something I made after getting more used to the new piano sounds. Written by Jacob Sternborn
Shadyone
That one's really nice, it definitely suits the title of Steady March.. I could probably even march to it if I wanted to.
What program do you use?
Stern
I'm glad you liked it! smile.gif

To answer your question; I'm using Fruity Loops 9
Shadyone
Ahh I see.. I have lots of trouble with FL Studio 9.. too difficult to use for me lol
arokalot
Wow this is some nice work you have here. I also use FL9. Maybe we can work on a piece together. I could use some pointers in piano.
Stern
@arokalot: Thanks! It'd be fun to work together, unfortunately I suck at teaching so pointers will be rare tongue.gif

New piano piece!
Mastering Agony
This piece was written for one of the more powerful scenes of Beneath,
it might feel a bit repetetive, I don't know. What do y'all think? It's written by Jacob Sternborn
arokalot
Again with another great piece. I liked it so much I had to listen 3 times. I love the whole song feel. Dark and mysterious yet uplifting at the same time. More I must hear more. cool.gif
Stern
@arokalot: Thanks! I'm glad you liked it. I'm happy you picked up on the "Dark and mysterious yet uplifting". I tried to make something similar to this. Hence the strong focus on the piano.
Stern
Here's a new song!

Recreation
This is after disastrous scene in Grace. Written by Jacob Sternborn

Let me know what you think!

I think every song to your soundtrack is impressive... you do some amazing work with piano roll lol.
Stern
Thanks. I don't agree with you though, as I see myself as mediocre. Especially when it comes to percussion. sweat.gif

I'm currently trying something that I've previously found very hard. A Piano-Only piece. I just never can get it right. Hopefully it will turn out alright.

st3rn
Wanzer-panzer
Wow. Just wow. Everything sounds so professional, much better then on some major titles. If you don't mind me using this? and if I give you credit, both as St3rnb0rn and under your real name? I'll give a link to the youtube vids and forum if you let me. The game wont be for sale. This music mixed with some original pieces it would greatly enhance my game. This is seriously amazing.

The music I would like to use is anything you are not using for your project.
Stern
I'm really glad you like them. You can use anything that isn't titled "Beneath Music" or "Request" but so far there isn't much sad.gif. Credit "Jacob Sternborn".

I'll definately try to make some more stuff for people to use. I was thinking of making a pack of a few tunes and releasing for everyone to use, but I wasn't sure if anyone would be interested.

Regards,
st3rn
Stern
Yey, new song!~

A Planned Death
I "doodled" a bit. This piece wasn't made specifically for anything :>

Since the competition has come to an end, I thought I could post this 'ere sweat.gif

Waging War
I wrote this for the competition on R3. The theme was symphonic orchestra. It got 2nd place
Stern
This is no longer a thread for my music only. I merged it with my Art thread. This means I'll be posting some random doodles here as well biggrin.gif

Like this one;
[Show/Hide] Face-Graphic

I tried to focus on shading the hair properly, but I'm still struggling with getting it to look right. I'd love pointers and tips if you have 'em!
X-M-O
I think the style looks great, and the hair looks good.
The part that needs work is the fact that you need to decide where the light source is at and shade everything to reflect (no pun intended) that source.
So, while a lot of it is correct, the light seems to be coming from the bottom-right. So shading needs to be more prominent on the top-left.
Some of the shading happens at unbalanced intervals. A good idea would be to check this tutorial out and see what part you can improve. =]
Shadyone
It looks great, that bandage bugs me though.. it doesn't wrap around the head cleanly, it has a little bit of a point at right jaw (from his perspective) and on top of his ear has a bit of a point upwards. His expression creeps me out, I think he wants to exploit me D:
Stern
@X-M-O: Thanks for the reply! I am really bad at lightsources and shading. I saved the tutorial and I'll make sure to follow it
closely for my next coloured picture! Hopefully you'll be able to spot a minor improvement, at the least. biggrin.gif

@Shadyone: Yeah, I'm terrible at drawing proper bandages/clothing/folds. I tried to make it that some of the hair from the back of his head stuck out behind the bandage, but it looks a bit wonky, I agree!

Lineart/Sketch

Here's a picture I was drawing/working on yesterday. The sketch took about 15 minutes (which is really fast for being me). I haven't done much with the lineart yet so some of the lines look jaggy if you zoom in. It was mostly to practice full-body poses, female anatomy and clothing-folds, which I'm also having trouble with.
Shadyone
Another good looking drawing, although her chest area is a bit masculine, mainly around the shoulders and the arms a bit. Otherwise it's fine biggrin.gif
Stern
Thanks! The shirt was at first meant to be a leather-vest, but mid-drawing it I changed it. I forgot to amend the shoulders completely biggrin.gif

No way back (working title)
This is a small sample, or draft rather, of what I'm working on right now, any feedback is appreciated!
Stern

Random picture. Practiced hands (I'm abyssmal at drawing hands! sweat.gif) and lightsources. I was going to try to do some fancy stuff with the hair but I didn't quite think through the pose and the hand sorta made it too hard >_>
X-M-O
That's very good, especially for having a hand in the hair.
It's exceptionally difficult to get hands looking right, but to be putting them in the hair... that's pretty challenging. Kudos for that! =]

The colours are spectacular! I love blood reds and blacks on clothing; that sounded weird, but anyway... I'm not a vampire... <.<
You've done pretty good with the lighting too, by the way.

I really like the drawing. Is there any chance that you'll tell me why there are bandages on her legs?
Stern
Thank you! I like blood-red as well. It's definately one of my favourite colours.

There is no particular reason as to why she has bandages on her legs. It's just something I randomly add as a bad habit if I think the picture looks to empty or the clothes too boring. sweat.gif
X-M-O
Well, an idea for something else you can add if you feel the image is too bland...
Tattoos, jewellery, ribbons, accessories, or an animal/book/game that the character is focussing on. =]

I think the idea of tattoos and/or jewellery on a character drawing can use useful, inspiring, and unique. ^^
Stern
@X-M-O: Thanks for the advice! I think that I could probably work with tattoos and jewerly to begin with. I doubt I could draw a proper looking animal (yet) as I still struggle with human anatomy sweat.gif

This is a random story that I started writing. I find that when it comes to writing a proper novel or similar kind of storytelling my vocabulary is lacking. Especially if I compare my swedish works with the english ones. So I wrote this mostly to see if it was noticeable that english wasn't my native language. The story isn't finished, but I didn't feel like posting a massive wall of text, so I took a little bit to start with sweat.gif
The City in Ashes
It’s just another night, like any other. The city is as desolate and sepulchral as yesterday. You can feel the chilling, but familiar, breeze that seems to be following along the empty streets. The currents create a hauntingly beautiful sound that feels oddly like the agonizing screams that this city once was known for. In the obscurity it looks like the vines growing on the sidewalk take the shape of people seeking sanctuary in the darkness. An odd flickering streetlight serves as our guiding star in this despairing atmosphere. Navigating the wide cracks in the road could prove troublesome for some, but I’ve walked this road a multitude of times before.

I always try to stay sane, but it saddens me to see this place in such state. I tend to ignore what this city symbolizes, or rather, what it has become. I still see it as my home. Is that too morbid? Many would probably argue that it is, but I won’t let others opinions overshadow my judgement.

Hayley is holding my arm as tight as she can as we walk over the terrace. She knows just as well as I do, that we’re being watched. In every window of every building, you can see their azure eyes following our every movement. I suppose it should worry me the same way it worries Hayley, but I can’t say that I mind walking around with a hypothetical bull’s eye on my back. Being the prey of a predator is my favourite blood sport. The reason why I’m carrying a leather pouch with gunpowder isn’t to use it for ammunition, but to lure out the beasts. They recognize the strong scent of the gunpowder and relate it to human flesh. Unfortunately, they’ll be disappointed.

- “Aren’t you worried that they’ll come for us?” She asked with a slight stutter on her voice.
- “Nah, don’t worry sis. Even if they do, you’re in good hands.”
- “I guess you’re right”

Hayley is a goodhearted girl. She deserves a home more than anyone. She’s far too graceful for this place. It’s demoralizing to think that I can fight off these disgusting beasts like they were nothing, just to protect her, but I can’t do anything to save her from this filthy hellhole. I’ve wanted to help her ever since I met her. Well, you could say that I did help her, but at this pace it looks like we’re going to be spending the rest of our existence as outlaws.

As we were getting closer to the plateau I felt Hayley’s excitement rising in form of painful pinches in my left arm. For now, I let her. It’s not every day I get to see her in such a good mood. It brings me joy to see that she still can find a shed of light in this, otherwise funereal city. There’s something about this girl that makes me want to keep on going. Maybe it’s the way she tries to convince me that no matter how bad we have it, it can’t get worse than her previous life. Before I liberated her from her father. Yeah, by “liberated” I mean dismembering him slowly limb by limb. If you still haven’t picked up on the fact that I’m not an elegant or courtly guy, that should do the job. Her father was nothing but a despicable vermin who didn’t deserve his life. This might seem slightly hypocritical coming from someone who kills people for a living, I know. I did it for her and she's thankful for it. I stopped walking for a brief moment and Hayley looked at me with a puzzled look.

- “You know, Hayley? Once I have enough money to buy you a better life, I will. I promise.”
- “You’re working too hard! You know that I’m happy as long as I can be with you.”
She replied.
Stern

Another one! I spent longer on this one than I normally do. It might be noticeable, it might not. I also tried to make some nicer looking lineart >_>. I think I have the shading under control for the most bit. I might be completely off though, still practicing.

Also, those aren't meant to be bandages, but I'm pretty bad at drawing clothing folds so it turned out to look more like bandages than anything else >_<.

Also... Hands... ... sweat.gif

EDIT: Oh and also some failed anatomy...

Dude

EDIT2: Oh dear. I didn't realize the scribble-doodly-man was so huuuuge!
X-M-O
The City in Ashes is actually well-written, and I liked it. happy.gif

Your orange-haired, female maniac doesn't look that bad either, lol. Just missing the hands and a couple areas that look slightly off-balance, but nothing to be worried about (except the hands). wink.gif

Your huge male anatomy image looks pretty good, and fairly accurate in relation to anatomy. Not sure why you consider it to be a failed attempt, it does work pretty well. =]
Stern
Thanks for the feedback!

I'm glad you liked the short story. As I mentioned, I'm pretty insecure when it comes to writing stories so it means a lot! biggrin.gif I might post more parts of the story later at some point, if I feel that it's good enough to be posted sweat.gif

The reason I wrote "failed anatomy" was mostly because I noticed that the arms looked pretty wonky. I only noticed this after I had scanned it, but couldn't be arsed to redraw and rescan tongue.gif

Again, thanks for the feedback! biggrin.gif
Stern
2 New compositions!

Don't Look Back
A very upbeat march-inspired symphonic piece.

The Bells of Deceit
Morbid, Melodic and orchestral chimes ;D

I'm working on a 3rd at the moment. I might edit this and add it. It kinda depends on when I'm done with it biggrin.gif
X-M-O
Don't Look Back reminds me of Donkey Kong Country music. (Which I love!!) I like the subtle beat and instrument progression. happy.gif
Just think it could do good to have a nice climax at some point. wink.gif

The Bells of Deceit sounds like it belongs in an old castle of some sort. Battle drums, royal throne-room music, and the bells are a nice addition. =]

Looking forward to the next one. ^^
Stern
A Life Beneath
The main theme of 'Beneath' remastered.

@X-M-O:
Yeah, I can understand a bit why it reminds you of Donkey Kong Country. Would probably be even more noticable if it were a bit more bluesy or jazzy. Thanks for the feedback and opinions! biggrin.gif
X-M-O
A Life Beneath is brilliant! Hats off to you. happy.gif
It also ends quite well, nothing elaborate but isn't dull or unrefined. =]
Stern
Thanks! I'm happy you like it! You got to have a nice and memorable main theme and hopefully this will be just that ^^.

Also, slow reply, heh. I blame the summer! >_>
X-M-O
I also blame the summer! tongue.gif

Are you working on any new music projects right now?
I was wondering if you had ever considered making your own remixes of some SNES games (like DKC), just for the sake of it. =]
I know I'd love you for infinity and a cookie! tongue.gif
Stern
Been doing random sketches that I'm too lazy to scan/lineart/color. So currently no particular music projects.

Remixing some memorable SNES tracks could be fun. Got any suggestions on game/track? biggrin.gif
EDIT: Woops, somehow my brain missed the DKC bit. It is 03:40 am after all!
X-M-O
Wow, you need to get some sleep and then get back here and make some remixes! wink.gif

Yes, a few good SNES games that you should try out (for fun and what not):
Donkey Kong Country (And DKC 2!)
Super Metroid (Oh yeah!)
Super Bomberman 2 (Prefer "2" more than the other ones, lol.)
Megaman (I can't remember the specific game versions, so I'll have to revisit this one and give you some example files...)

And then there's always the original Sonic games from SEGA Genesis... =D
Stern
Ellooo!

DKC - Main Theme
So I made a remix. It took around 3 hours. It should be noted that this is probably the first remix I've ever done, so it might not be top notch. I was a bit unsure about how much of the song I should change. Don't be surprised if you like the original better than this sweat.gif

It was quite fun and relaxing. Depending on how it's recieved, I'll make a few more. It's, as I stated above, outside of my comfort zone. So any feedback or suggestions on changes would be great. I also enabled download, because I won't really use it for anything so feel free ;D
