Here you will find work, done by me, in a photo editing software called GIMP. GIMP is a photoshop-like program that has easy to use features such as warp, noise, and more. It's free!
Now, using Corel Painter Essentials 4 which is an advance painting program used to immitate real life paining situations, such as brushes, chalk, canvas, grain, and so forth.

You made this in GIMP...? I obviously haven't used it enough... It looks awesome.

It looks fairly good. I've only used GIMP to make my signature down below, with the badass explosion and the parakeet smack-dab in your face and the stacked words of PARAKEET pelvic-thrusting your eyes.

Thanks, I got the idea from blue lava(or larva?) firefox theme. They had this orb so I tried to replicated. Exploding stage was my add on after that

They look awesomez Kayden997, I haven't really used GIMP, so the best I can do is make things shiny hahaha.

I love the second, modified one. In my opinion, the stars look a little dull, though. It looks like you used the Pencil... maybe you should try the fuzzy circle brushes with the Paintbrush? The lighting also is a bit off; it doesn't make sense to have a small, illuminated circle to represent the lighting. Look at this as a reference, about half of the planet is lighter, though subtly. I also think you should make the planet's outline more recognizable on the second one. :0

Mar 25 2011, 08:29 AM
For the stars, I just used "Hurl" in the "Noise" effect and made them white. Truly I don't think the starts look bad, they scream "HD" to me Hmm, I guess it would benifit it I did highlight the outer edges more.
One thing, I don't have the project since this was made a month ago, sorry.
But thank you the tips

Damn...sux you don't have Project these are nice...I could never adapt to Gimp. I prefer Photoshop and Fireworks 8.

While bringing up this topic again. Any ways, I wanted to do more art in Gimp and I wanted to try out new cell shading methods. And what better way to try it out then on a tablet?
And that's exactly what I did:
Refer to #3 in archive
I don't care about the reference, whatever inspires me to do art is good enough for me
I'm gonna choose a different reference for my next cell shading project Any feedback would be appreciated

That is really good. Love the Runescape character with the party hat.
For cell-shading, you've done very nicely. The lighting and shading bits actually look like there is a specific light source, so nicely done there as well. =D

Why thank you. I don't believe I'm that great at lighting so I tried my best

Alright, I guess I can present my latest work.
Also, I thought of blending the colours and shades. Any thoughts on that?

Blending the colours and shades is only necessary if you intend on using gradients (for your sky, in example). I'd recommend making your sky look like the remainder of the artwork, and not using gradients at all. Unless, of course, you want to get more "realistic" and do everything with gradients.

It's all rather good work for something done in GIMP. I, for one, hope you do more. :3
kayden997
Nov 24 2011, 12:12 PM
@X-M-O Ah, I see your point, I will try both and see which one looks better
@Zackwell Good thing, I am expecting to do more

LOL, I tried something different and went with free-hand drawing. Fuuuuuu.... I don't have that great of skill when it come to this but... w/e

Yes, advice and criticism is allowed... But really, this isn't something to take account for. Maybe just advice for future reference.

Nov 26 2011, 06:16 PM
I don't think harsh criticism is necessary, as I've seen artwork that is much, much worse in commercial games (recent commercial games, I might add). XD That said, you might want to be sure the next person you draw has a discernible chin.
Nicely done, overall. I like the way the hair resembles hay. Gives it a strangely natural look. =]

Jimmy just wants to make you go "heh heh" for some reason. He looks a lot like a lovable jerk. Good work.

Wow, wow, wow! Haven't posted in a while.
Well I think I should start using some new advance programs to satisfy my learning. Here's what I've done in Corel Painter Essentials 4 Refer to #1 in 2nd archive

Looks pretty good to me. I like the shadowing, it really give it some depth~ Have you just started playing with Corel?

Looking great! Would recommend shading for your background stone pillar as well.
kayden997
Dec 22 2011, 12:51 AM
@Nanashi Yeah, I just started. When I got my tablet I also got the program for free. I didn't start using it until now. It's pretty neat by my standards
@X-M-O Right, right. I should of did that as well. My mistake = lazyness
I hope to do more pictures like this more often. It's quite fun for me and it turns out awesome

So, I produced another image in Painter Essentials 4. I attempted to not use black outlining because the complex shading on the dragon.... ya... Here it is Refer to #2 in 2nd archive
I would appreciate feedback on this... I worked hard on this one.

Very interesting, there simple yet have a relaxing feel to them when I look at them. kinda reminds me of old dos games in a way. Would be nice to see these as cutscenes in a game

The dragon looks really good; I'm not sure how detailed you were going to go with it, but if you want to add veins to the wings, then it might look even more cool. Then again, I could be wrong, since it looks great as-is. =]
The lighting and the perspective look about right, too. So I've no complaints.
kayden997
Dec 30 2011, 02:00 AM
I do like this style as well. It takes a bit more time and detail but I think it's worth it. Hopefully the dragon doesn't look too much of a mess.
I'll try to do more action scenes like these, maybe create my own.... Or not... I'm not really that great

Lol, it's funny because actually game play isn't like that. XD I'm like an advert to Runescape, making it seem great when it's really not

Dec 30 2011, 02:38 PM
That dragon looks amazing~ Everything in the image looks good, and I take it they are in a desert setting? Only thing I can say is detail in the wings is missing and the warrior might need some armour (only if you planned on it at some point, he's okay as is).
kayden997
Dec 31 2011, 12:26 AM
I think I'll improve on the character, background, and dragon wings.
@Nanashi It was a cave but I guess I'll have to make that more clear now do i

Oh, sorry, lol! If you add some stalactites and stalagmites it should be fine~

Improved version! Refer to #3 in 2nd archive
I darkened the ground, added some detail, and re-did the wall. Also added some texture to the wings but not veins since it's a metal dragon

Okay... I haven't touched anything major lately so I just did some simple free drawing without reference... Still gotta improve!

Ugg... Gotta improve my lighting, shading, and drawing hands >.<

I absolutely LOVE #3 in the gimp archive. The angle/perspective is pulled off gorgeously, you achieved a very professional looking cell shaded look thar just sayin'
kayden997
Jan 11 2012, 02:11 PM
@Alexandre8100 Thanks! Appreciate it
@Homunculus Yeah, and that was my first attempt at it. It took about 3 days (not fully) but in the end looks amazing. I simply love cell-shade art
kayden997
Jan 18 2012, 04:26 PM
Alright, I did some more free drawing because I need to improve on it... A LOT! First one I was just practising some head and hand drawing. Second one I was doing some all around drawing; from stick man to shading.
Refer to #5 and #5.5 in 2nd archive
I haven't really tackled anything big lately, partly because I'm waiting 'till I get ideas, hopefully, for the art competition
Take a gander if you would

Looking good, though I would say that you've got the wrong hand on that first image's head. If I were to put my left hand on the right side of my head, I could get my thumb to face that direction. =]
I love the sword! And your guy is almost making a troll face there. =D

I knew it! It just didn't look right to me for some reason so I flipped it! Nooo!

Apr 16 2012, 01:15 AM
Ok, like I said before, I'm starting to do cell shading again. Because I'm so excited for this one (because I'm sure my skills have improved), I have to show my W.I.P in my up coming one. This is at the 2 hour mark.

I agree, the hair did turn out nice. This is going to have more shades then the previous cell shade image. Arg, I progressed on it more but I shouldn't post too many updates on this single image.

I think the arrowhead needs to be further forward than it is right now; it's not resting on anything and in reality you couldn't fire the arrow like that at all. =]
kayden997
May 27 2012, 12:38 PM
And done. I couldn't think of a background for this one (mainly because I put the light in the middle between the two) but I'm sure it's fine without. Also, I went with a high contrast look on the shadows. I think it looks pretty neat.

That has somehow captured the movements of runescape perfectly, especially swordmonk. Feels like there should be an arrowhead (just like a bit of the shaft peeping underneath the glove or something) but its no biggie really.
