the question is: is it a cliche (King or queens long lost "insert family member of coise" returns)? i ask because in some games i tend to become powerhungry and aim for the throne, take Mount & blade for an example, when i realized that i couldn't become king in title or conquer kingdoms for myself i instantly installed a mod that enabled theese options.

My original idea was that there was a plot against the royal family by the uncle of the newborn (to be, when adult) king and his little brother, to then take the throne by himself, the second son would survive and raised as a blacksmith and believing that he was the blacksmiths familys son. The events of the main plot would lead him to realizing his past, real relatives and eventualy overthrow his uncle and submit to his fate and become king

This discussion started off with a point but ended in a jumbled mess of thoughts floating around in your head. I no longer am certain of what you're asking for. In order for me to help you, please clean up your first post with a more direct question with less going off on tangents.

After that I'd be glad to contribute to this discussion some more. I'm just saying this because your post really isn't going anywhere and you may get better results if you keep it all clearn and concise.

Nice. The thread is a bit more clear on what it's asking now.

Personally I think the 'relative to the king' and 'long lost royal family member' is WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAY over played. If at all avoid it.

What's a far more powerful story is something like low ranking soldier pushes to the highest rank, then comes to take the throne after resolving a tragedy. If you understand governments, you may find far more interesting stories outside of monarchies.

There are governments ruled by a large amount of old stuffy men. That's called a republic and ancient Roman times is a fine example of it. (Romans actually came BEFORE the medieval ages, for those who may have forgotten their history lessons.) There was an emporer, but he wasn't exactly the only one in power.

There's also military goverments, where the highest ranking member of the military rules the country. Kritarchy is also an interesting form of government. There's also a ruling council of tribesman in some places, and places even in modern day where anarchy exists.

What I'm trying to say here is don't do the King's nephew route, try something more innovative by playing with different governments. Perhaps allow your main character to completely overthrow a government even.

I'm sure you'll figure it out.

Titanhex i have found quite a few ideas and different route to power, now i have to choose but i wont discuss that here as this isn't the thread for that

Everyone else this is a thread for discussing cliche, so what do you think is a cliche? besides from the main posts example...

Knights are a major cliche.

Ex-military is a very big cliche as well. Seems like everyone and their mother makes a story about how player X must betray his country in some way, even if it's for the greater good of his country.

The (Tank > Mage > Thief) party pickup order is more cliche than you can shake a stick at.

The Robin Hoode Thief is also a minor albeit uncreative cliche.

The White Mage love interest is also cliche.

It can go on for a while. I think there's something stickied at the top of the forum that addresses major cliches.
