Full Version: one man team (loss of motivation)

I came here becuse i was interested in making a game (i guess most of us are), the thing is i have time but lack skills, i wanted to learn to create a game in order to be a one man team and again i stress that i have time and the will to learn. I chose spriting as my first priority to learn as i view it as the easiest part to learn. Today i was thinking about making the character creation page and lost motivation when i thought about scripting - i didn't know where to start (keep in mind that i didn't want it to be a compilation of already created scripts as i wanted the game to be 100% original)

this discussion is about loss of motivation, what you can, should or should not do bout it - what would you do?
Modesty
It sounds like you're overwhelming yourself which only leads to frustration and the lack of will. And this is quite common. The greatest misconception about making games I think is that "making games = FUN". The reality is making games = WORK. It is a labor of love.

What I might do is try out some of the tutorials listed here about an aspect of scripting that you want to include in your game. Follow it and practice it.

Make a very simple level with various aspects of script and continue to build on it.
Once you've made some progress in scripting you can focus on how sprites work. There are also tutorials on making sprites so give them a look and follow them. Then add your newly created sprites to your simple level and see how they work with the world.

The road to making your 100% original game will be a long one. So don't focus too much on your originality until you learn the basics.
Hope this helps.smile.gif I know it may seem tough but you might surprise yourself on how quickly you pick up on things.

Yeh, like Modesty said there are many great scripting tutorials around here. On the Main Site you can find lost of begginer tutorials that explain the different terms and slowly introduce you to the language. You can also check out the tutorial section of the forums for some great stuff by the 'Script Builders' that explains the differents Windows and Scene functions.

As for motivation, I like to set myself little accomplishable goals. For example I might plan to fully sprite 3 of my main characters' battlers by the weekend. Having small goals gives you something to accomplish, makes you feel good about yourself and your progress and every step brings you closer to finnishing without seeming impossible!

Modesty: I think that i will be following Knot's advice (with a few tweaks) and by that, following your advice; What i meant by that is that if i decide to add a list of goals (goals being small and simple games) and then expand on the scripts after each and every goal completed, i would learn basic scripting and be working towards my real goal. or i could just do what i said to knot "i think i will do this. adding minor goals that works towards and on the real goal."

Are you looking for a team to build your game or a team you can join to build their game?

If the latter, I have a team you might be interested in joining.

As it just so happens, we could use an art person/spriter. If you're not familiar with Fire Emblem at all though, you'd have to learn how to format images and stuff of that sort, so it might not be worth it, but it's an option.

Neither, as currently i suck at spriting/mapping/scripting and whatnot but is a rather decent writer (that is also part of why i chose to join as i saw a potential to learn). If i weren't that bad with shading and well creating sprites i would consider your offer though

as for how familiar i am with Fire Emblem; i have completed the game FE the sacred stones

hey, it'll be cool, man. i'm at that same loss of motivation that has plagued me all last year. i believe i had several good concepts, but i lost interestin them, deleted them, and started anew. all you have to do is start small, and go BIG. and if you're looking for a partner, i'm open for collabs. although you're screwed if your looking for graphics in your game. or original music. dry.gif

Hey I think that there are lots of paths that you can take to be a game developer. If you don't know what path to take that's ok. Try exploring everyone of them. Game Career Guide has some great introductory articles.
