Welcome to the Happy Holidays edition of the R3News

It's hard to believe we are coming to the and of another year- but it is the holiday season and I am sure that you are all looking forward to some time off school/college or work (I know I am!).

As we wind down this year, let's have a few tasters as to what's on the plate for next year (are they rumours or are they true - ha only time will tell)

Project of the Month is returning under a different guise - as each month entries will all be working towards Project of the Season. HarryB412 is working on a new way of making this happen so keep a look out.

Another new member of staff to welcome on board is X-M-O , the man of many hats -- He's part of the magazine team, competition organiser and motivates and assists the Reviewers- along with running around the forum at nine million miles an hour -- tongue.gif

There are plans for a new Resource City where exclusive resources wil be posted by a dedicated team. Holder the newest Director but a man of even more hats than XMO ( I worked out that since he joined back in 2006 he has been Staff, Head Staff, Gold Member, Writing Team, Global Mod, Regular Mod, Member and now Director.) is setting up all the details for this and we will be filling you in with more details in the new year.

Another forum sort out is on it's way, our staff are going to be neighbours so they'll be easier to locate and see what they're all up to as they continue to make this place better and better.

We are being told by iEntry that a board upgrade will happen sometime in the future and with that a major revamp to the main site. Which we're currently working through all the details for, and making sure we get the most out of this chance to have a lovely front door once again.

Our IRC has a brand new home, From Ariel (Head of IRC and its Administrator) reports that it supports all the features that you are used to, and providing you wipe your feet (new carpet) before you go in everyone is welcome.
All the menu links for Chat now direct you to their new home, so if you were wondering why you weren't able to get in then now's your chance to do so.

A couple of topics that grabbed my interest for you before I hand you over to the staff who have prepared a few tasty treats,

Season's Greetings from the R3 Reviewer Staff!

We'd like to welcome two new members to the Reviewer Staff: Guyver's Bane and Zackwell!
Congratulations you guys! =]

Since the last News and Views, we've had 3 Previews and 2 Reviews submitted to the RRR Official Reviews forum.
We're hoping to get more reviews out now that we have more staff, so be on the lookout for more games getting a p/review.
("P/Review" is just a short way to say both "preview" and "review".)

Please note that the Request a P/Review topic has had a few changes. So for those of you who have requested a p/review, we have those games on a "priority" list to be p/reviewed prior to other games being p/reviewed. This does not mean that newer games will not be p/reviewed, and it does not guarantee that requested p/reviews are done first. Reviewer Staff are responsible for choosing which game(s) they p/review, and as a general courtesy will often choose games on the priority list.
Also note, when requesting a game to be p/reviewed, there are a few requirements before those games are p/reviewed (see above link, or click here for more information).

The R3M (RRR Magazine) staff is working hard to produce yet another amazing magazine for you guys, so please be patient whilst we sort things out and prepare to deliver another fantastic periodical! =]
If you'd like to join in and work as part of the Magazine Staff, be sure to let us know! We'd love to allow you to share your talent(s) and help make our magazine more enjoyable. happy.gif

_.-='~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~'=-._
I know some of you are looking forward to this, so... Here's the scoop!
We've had two Game Competitions and one Art Competition so far, and I'm preparing some more competitions for you guys! =D
So, if you are interested in Art Competitions, you'll be pleased to know that we will be having Art Competition #2 starting up in January.
We will also be having a Game Competition starting up sometime after the Art Competition is completed, so for all you gamers that want to compete, be sure to keep an eye out for Game Competition #3.
Also note, I am still taking suggestions for themes for both the Art and Game Competitions!
So feel free to PM me about either. =]

For those of you who aren't interested in either Art or Game competitions... what are you even doing here?! wink.gif
Just kidding! =D
We will be having some Writing, Video, Graphics, and Music competitions for you, IF we get enough interest.
So if you want to see any of these happen, please inform me via PM so that I can know how many people are interested and get some started up for you guys.

_.-='~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~'=-._
And lastly, a quick preview...
There will be a "secret" competition going on between December 31st and April 24th.
It's secret because it relates to April 24th AND you won't know what you're looking for. wink.gif
(But if you see it, you'll know and you'll know what to do - PM me with details!)
Anyone who finds the "secret" will be a winner (first to find it will be 1st place, second to find it will be 2nd, etc.).

It is time for RPG Maker 2003 users to be ecstatic: Cherry has released his brand-new tool, RPG Maker 2009 Ultimate! Rather than patching the executable files, this program loads your RM2k3 editor and apply changes directly into your RAM. A whole list of features are already available such as user-defined interface, resources subfolders, event command highlighting, break of file size limit and many more...
Ultimately, even CGSS (a scripting language made by Cherry himself) will be available!

On the Game Engines side, 001 Game Creator is now present on the forum (it was only mentioned on the main page before) and better than ever. 001 is very close to RPG Maker XP at first glance, but offers interesting features, like a particle engine and a scripting language close to Visual Basic.
You should definitely check it out.
RPG Toolkit is another engine, advertised in RRR by Rukiri. It is quite difficult to get into, but the RPGCode is a hybrid language supporting both procedural and OO programming. Its raw capabilities outmatch RPG Maker XP or VX though.
And lastend's Visual RPG Studio keeps up the steady updates, meaning more features and bug fixes.
Lastly, Ryex, a fairly known scripter, decided to write a custom editor for RPG Maker XP, named RPG Maker PY. It will be written in Python for platform-crossing purposes. It is in very early development stage, and Ryex currently looks for ideas and suggestions on what should be implemented. He also recruits programmers adept with Python and wxWidgets.
If you're interested, help Ryex to draw the full potential of his project!

RZRBLADE
Since the Event Emporium opened up back on March 25th we have had quite a decent amount of requests for help and submissions from the community. We've gotten everything from battle systems to simple things like fishing and cooking. We've got quite a crew for the Event Emporium that love to help anyone with event problems. We actually have the Submission Lounge which was created by Hatredlust which is meant for requests.. however there's been no traffic in the thread at all, perhaps we could get this thing going and help the community!

In case you are looking for a certain type of event, you can take a look at the Event Submission List which was created by yours truly to help everyone in their search for an event system. We hope you've enjoyed this little update of the Event Emporium. We have grown quite a bit in the past few months and we hope to expand even further so don't hesitate to give us a visit! (Special thanks to Hatredust for requesting a forum just for events!)

Holder
Introductions have never seemed like the most popular of all places to visit, yet over the last month we've seen many a great members return to RRR. I'd like to have this little section to welcome back those who've recently returned.
Little Lynn graces RRR once again with a great rainbow glow, she's certainly been missed outside of The Game Lounge.
Homunculus is back around again, I'm sure many of yous are familiar with her art and she's now offering to do tutorials to whoever wants to learn.
Greelinator has once again opened RM and returned.
Fearoftheunknown is back to bring us those Cesspool topics we all love to hate.
Godspeed, the godfather of the first Magazine we did is now back.
The Rooster a #RRR IRC Staff member comes back on board, I'm sure yous will catch up with him in there.
A Guyver's Bane appeared, making a great return to RRR and wants to know the real you.
Klokinator recently returned with some interesting news.
Brent Murray is here once again making RRR his nethome, and what this? A present?
Prelude Dikter is after some answers laugh.gif

...and yes unfortunately Ember is still with us teehee.gif

It seems that RGSS2 has taken over the old RGSS scripts, it seems that there are
very few RGSS scripts posted now days, which is quite a shame really, it shows
that VX is slowly but surely taking the lead over XP.

Anyway, heres a few scripts that caught my eye as i browsed the script section,
some are old, and some are fairly new.

RGSS-

Mouse Window API - by: Ryex
http://www.rpgrevolution.com/forums/index....showtopic=46569

Now, although this is a Scripter API, if you have allot of scripting knowledge you can really put
this API to some brilliant uses, it is packed full of features. And is certainly a brilliant way to manipulate
the mouse, it even allows the creation of dragable windows. One of my favorite API's.

Extended Random Encounters (ERE) - by: Kread-EX
http://www.rpgrevolution.com/forums/index....showtopic=42488

Well, Kread-Ex has made a rather interesting script that adds a few new features to the random encounters,
instead of a boring typical random encounter, it displays a colorful circle to
know a fight will start. The redder the circle is, closer the battle is. A great script for those random encounter lovers.

Super Simple Custom Save Folder System - by: amaranth
http://www.rpgrevolution.com/forums/index....showtopic=24985

well the title really says it all. For people who use vista save data can be a problem, since it cant be stored in
the place its meant to be stored unless you have admin access. So this script allows you to set up a custom folder to save
your save data too. Simple really smile.gif

RGSS2-

Stealth Detection System (SDS) - by: Cmpsr2000
http://www.rpgrevolution.com/forums/index....showtopic=15208

Ah, the good old stealth detection system, made famous by the game "metal gear solid" the script
is packed full of features, and is resemble easy to configure, ofcourse like most scripts you'll need a
little bit of scripting knowledge to do a good job.

+ [ Mini - Map ] + - by: woratana
http://www.rpgrevolution.com/forums/index....showtopic=17207

A mini-map script that doesnt need any image files, all done by script. It looks fairly good too.
Has a few features like changing the position of the mini map with a call script. Easy to use and
plug and play

Legacy's Script Request Workshop - by: Legacy biggrin.gif
http://www.rpgrevolution.com/forums/index....c=46764&hl=

Nows your chance to request a script that you've always wanted. lI have opened up my own
workshop for RGSS scripts only, for now. follow the topic rules and guidelines, and your
script will be added to the list.

Dark Halo
Resource Submission.

Ookie Panda shares with us some beautiful Rmvx resources, in particular the face sets as well
as some unique character sets, which hopefully will be kept updated.
Certainly worth taking a look in.
http://www.rpgrevolution.com/forums/index....st&p=461650

As its been quite a busy month with members submitting their own resources, this was another
thread which showcases some lovely vx sprites created by Lunarea.
http://www.rpgrevolution.com/forums/index....st&p=462523

Don't forget to visit the 66rpg Resource Centre too. While it still focuses on Rmxp material, this is
updated on a regular basis by darkhalo. Worth calling in, even to get idea's for your own project.

Halls of Critique

A great way of presenting your great creative talent. Whether you just want feedback on your
work currently in progress or advice on the finished article, this is the place to come.
For example, Holder's animated battler....

Tutorials and Examples

The place to visit for learning how to improve your game with some great tuitions by various R3
members. Here is a tuition by DaOrst who describes how to add some easy weather effects in
your game as well as using creative lighting and shadows. Its well presented using screenshots
too, so you get a good idea on how the events and scripts are put to use.

Just like before, I'm only linking to the RP Sign Up topics so that those of you who are interested can read the rules for specific RPs rather than jumping right in.

Theres been a lot of discussion setting up a crossover RP featuring characters from other RP's in the past.

Trainer Nicsp Wants to RP!
He sends out Pokemon Spiral of Shadows
Based on the two gamecube games, Pokemon Colosseum and Gale of Darkness, this is sure to be a critical hit!
Make sure to join in and catch lots of pokemon.
But not Legendary ones, those are endangered!

Everyone has a game they thought they would love to death and then they get it home and its worse than that old ET game.
Sorry... I shouldn't have brought that up... nothing is that bad.
Anyway, check this topic out, Great games that you hate

General Discussion:
Well it's that time of year again, and as another christmas comes racing towards us BlaZe22 asks What do you Love about Christmas? and has ever a more important question been asked? Well maybe just one, What lies did your parents tell you? which has seen all kinds of answers, from the downright hilarious to the downright heartbreaking. Not a thread to be missed. The only thread more insane than that one, and also the most active one, is Satou's F*ing Crazy Dream Showcase enter at your own risk.

Serious Discussion:
Serious discussion has seemed to have lost some steam recently, perhaps the christmas mood has made people too joyful to argue, but that hasn't stopped the controversial Wikileaks making an appearance on the forums. And we still have, perhaps, the most important question our generation needs to ask: Islam, What is it?

I'm Sparrowsmith, wishing you all a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. Let's roll on the next year with some rampant discussion!

We would like to end this edition which will be the last one for 2010, by saying a big thank you to all the staff who work very hard to make the forum the place that it is, and to all the members for their on going support,

Happy Christmas to those that celebrate it like I do, and to those that don't Happy Holidays.... biggrin.gif

See you in 2011!

Finally

In the spirit of the season- fun and games- thanks to GuyInTraining for the image below- can you spot the members of RRR?

Dark Gaia
Wow! You sure pulled out all the stops on this issue of R3 News! Look at all those links! Great to hear that Project of the Month will be coming back in some incarnation - I'm always supportive of anything that encourages the members to play the games.

Also, X-M-O did mention changes to the Request a Review thread, though he forgot to mention the added criteria that I have developed, to help ease the amount of games expecting reviews. I'll mention it here:

QUOTE
Game Request Criteria

Recently, the Reviewer Staff have felt a bit short staffed. As such, the number of requests that actually get reviewed has been rapidly decreasing of late. Because of this, I've decided to enforce some loose criteria to govern review requests, to ensure that the reviewers can fill requests for current, active games that are in need of a review.

The criteria is:

- Games must either have at least an hour of gameplay or be completed.
- Games must still be active (ie. the developer has posted in the game's topic within the last two weeks.
Albino Parakeet
Looks great, thanks Kaz.

And... Is that -me- on the banner? I say, that is one devilishly handsome bird!

I daresay, I've been here for two years now.

A lot of people have. tongue.gif

I like how a nice percentage of those are Touhou characters. XD
GuyInTraining
Uhh... sorry people. Due to the limited space available and since I don't know that much about the
people here, only those I know better and those with "appealing" but "easy to draw" avatars
exists.

QUOTE

Some people used Touhou characters as their avatars back when X-M-O requested me to make that pic.
Though some have changed their avatars by now, they should still recognize smile.gif

The one with black cape and distortion-like motive. I can't draw dragons, y'know? tongue.gif
leongon
I guess only those who are IN the picture knows who they are. I don't have a clue other than X-M-O that has a shirt with his nickname.
Kread-EX
Considering Touhou characters, it's kinda obvious: Remilia is Pipokary, Sakuya most likely Oceans Dream and Suika is me. Though I have no idea of who Patchouli represents...
Brent Murray
Sweet! It's nice to see that RRR is going to make some big changes in 2011 to make this place better than ever! A real well done job on the holiday article; and here's hoping for a wonderful end to the year!

Parakeet, you make a great Christmas ornament for the tree! biggrin.gif
kaz
I am the Rabbit next to the Screaming Star next to him is Darkblade.

I think that is Gamerbird on the banner..

Its a great picture - really lights up the Christmas issue.

Thanks for the feedback everyone!
Ratty524
Am I the puffy-cheeked king on the banner? I remember I had a chewing king as my avatar at one point.

Anyway, I adore how this turned out, and thanks for the feedback. smile.gif
Sparrowsmith
I have deduced that I must be the christmas tree on the right, it's just obvious. sweat.gif
Brent Murray
If your the tree, than I'm the single bulb on the right.

Yep...
Dark Gaia
Ah, I am in the banner after all, but as an avatar I had years ago.
OokiePanda
Thank you very much for the mention <3
I never thought my stuff would be highlighted. u/////u

This means a lot to me, I was doubting my ability and this makes me really happy to be recognized in the least place I'd expect it. (No offence, I just don't sign in here much. xP)
Kread-EX
RRR doesn't discriminate owo. It ish verinaise.
Perigryn
Sweet issue, team! Thanks for the reads and links! Happy Christmas and holidays, all!
Ninjuit
I am appalled that I was not included in the banner. I AM RRR! tongue.gif
