How about splitting the "mage/wizard" class into a few, ie. Elementalist/conjurer for the elemental damage and mage/wizard/sorcerer for the other magic (buffs, open doors, find object, petrify, poison, etc.)?

Also, you could try having different levels/grades for each of the classes. For example:

For mage class, since I am using it above already...

1. Apprentice - a few simple spells, some story-level abilities
2(a) - Scholar/Sage - more advanced buffs, better robes/armour/weapon, etc.
3(a) - Magi - other spells (petrify, poison, death command, charm, etc.), better robes/armour/weapon, etc.
2(cool.gif - Elemental Disciple - Lvl 1/2 elemental spells, robes/armour/weapon depending on elements (like water robe defends against
water-based attacks, water staff/rod increases water-based attacks, etc.)
3(cool.gif - Elemental Master - Lvl 3 elemental spells, ability to summon elemental guardian in combat (either one of several or have
each "Elemental Master" choose which element to align with)

Or, to give some other variety, let's try things with a priest class:

1. Acolyte - Basic healing spells, some story-level abilities
2(a) - Monk - Focussing mainly on buffer spells, higher agility/defense, multi-attack
3(a) - Holy Disciple - More powerful buffer spells, some holy attack/summon spells
2 (cool.gif - Cleric - More powerful healing spells, able to use holy weapon attacks / turn undead ability
3(cool.gif - Priest/Paladin - Strong healing abilities (incl. resurrect/raise), holy attack/summon spells

I've been working on a game on/off for a while now. I'm planning on implementing an archer class that keeps daggers as main weapons and uses his bow as a series of skills. So...

Class: Archer
Weapon: Daggers (Knife, Stiletto, Dirk, etc.)
Armor: Light (Leather, Cloak)
Skills: Arrows (Shoot, Overdraw, Multishot, Elemental Arrow, etc.)

Iz a nice take on the Archer class, innit? It's better than just plain 'shoot bow' for main attack and nothing else.
The Angel of Death
Rather Intresting.

Necroposting because I wanted to share an idea without opening up a repetitive, uncompiled thread:

LDanarkos
Sorry, I'm kind of sleepy, but...
Bard, necromancer, jedi, monk (like a Shaolin monk, not a healer), shaman, hunter, battle mage (red mage, etc.), time mage (chronomancer)
Shadyone
Stylist: Dual wields scissors for weapons and can create unique hair styles for the party lol.

Shaman: The Shamans weapon is a staff, they can summon spirits to attack in their stead, and they use spiritual magic to inflict damage on the enemy's soul. They can also change the elements of the party's weapons and buff them.

Botanist / Alchemist: Has the Pharmacy ability, but with 2x the effect as other party members, can create potions using herbs and can create bombs with chemicals.

Berserker: Dual wields swords and is a very valuable damage dealer that can buff himself to increase damage and speed with Berserk.

Here is one I'm using in RedSouls, please give credit to me if you use it.

Seraphim: Basically a Battle Priest tongue.gif can heal the party and buff them, as well as provide attack support.
Titanhex
Crystal Acolyte: Uses magic to form prisms of ice or earth. These prisms can shield allies or encase enemies. Crystal Acolytes also have a few light spells, which take full advantage of the prisms abilities to refract light. They serve as a versatile support class, with useful damage techniques.

Mimicry: Has the ability to learn and use the abilities of enemies. Sort of like a blue mage. However they also have the power to temporarily take on the form of certain enemies they encounter enough times.
StonerHilm
@Julian- Seraphim would be like Yuna without the summons?

Phalanx
Weapon: Polearms
Armor: Heavy Armors
Skills: Guard prevents more than the usual amount, Can cover allys, has defensive buffs and a few high damage attacks.
