Full Version: Making a Final Fantasy game with original story

I've started a new RMXP project *I haven't touched it in year(s)XD* and the story and characters are completely original. The thing is, I changed the names of some statuses, items, and skills to the names found in Final Fantasy games. Thus, I gave my game a Final Fantasy title "FFXP" -I may change the "XP" because I cannot believe that no one has taken that name prior to me-.

I've heard that Square Enix doesn't really like fanmade games, but since my game only shares names, and not characters or worlds, would it be okay?

I am not going to sell the game, just btw.

It's okay, just pointless. If the only thing stopping you calling the game completely original is the names of statuses, items and skills, simply rename those things.

Lots of games besides Final Fantasy has spells called "Cura" and "Fire/a". That shouldn't matter, and if they get you for that, sue for something, because you aren't doing anything wrong. biggrin.gif

I say go for it, but you should really try and rename a few of them. I think there is a guide... ohmy.gif

Alright, not sure if you guys are telling me to change the name or notXD Really, the only reason I named it Final Fantasy is because I discovered the joys of IX and XII *I have VIII but that junction thing is wtf* and it really inspired me to go back to RMXP XD It's been on my computer collecting dust for about a year and a half lol. It even inspired me to make a storyline XD *Before, I just made maps for practice, never a full game, but this might go well lmao* So yea, I guess I'll keep it. The only problem is, where the game is right now, only the names are the only Final Fantasy things in my game, but I've already started to add other FF elements, like Cid ;D Moogles, -and I'm trying to make a different skill learning system-. Ah well, I digress. lol.

I think the reason SE are so bitchy with fangames, is that they don't like thier stuff seen in other people's things. Which is fair, like if you spent several months on a wooden beam design, and then someone stole it and said it was thier own, you'd be pissed off right?
I don't think they'd hunt you down for skill names, after all they didn't copyright the skill names i don't think. and if they did, i don't think they would mind that much.

Well, yes, there is copyright to consider. I'm sure none of us would like something that we made from scratch to be stolen from us and sold by someone else.

But for fan-made games given out for free, why would they care then? The answer is simple. Any fan made thing has the potential to become huge and well-known. It isn't likely, but the possibility is there. What if said fan-made thing was utter garbage? Sad as it is, some people out there wouldn't be able to distinguish the difference between the fan-made game and an actual Square-Enix game. They'd assume that Square-Enix was somehow involved in something so poorly made, which would hurt S-E's reputation.

For that reason, no videogame company can allow fan games. Because any given fan game has the potential to hurt the reputation of the original creator.

That being said, most fan games are never finished. And those that actually are finished only find their way into the hands a very small, niche population. In other words, S-E will likely never hear about your fan game. And even if they did, they would only care about it if it started getting a LOT of buzz, which is unlikely. And even then, they would only send you a Cease and Desist letter asking you to abandon making your game. If you continued to make it after their CaD letter, THEN they might take the matter to court.

tl;dr version: Don't worry about it.
