About
LOE is a free Might and Magic inspired fan based game being created with Rpg Maker VX. LOE is an advanced cross between Might and Magic VII and Might and Magic IV & V – World of Xeen. Some of the features included in LOE include: a dynamic random treasure and enchantment system (more complex than the MM games), a six member party, over 20 skills and 70 spells, material bonus’s for equipment (silver, gold, etc), and much more.

3. The thread requires some fairly detailed but not yet too indepth information on the game's story, characters, gameplay and features/future features. You don't have to go into the extensive detail required in Full Games/Long Demos here, but you must still have some basic information about what your game entails.
4. Credits to all those who provided your scripts, graphics or sounds.

This really excites me. I like the idea of a more DnD or Might and Magic style game. I am really quite excited about this. Thumbs up! biggrin.gif
squirrelmg
Looks pretty awesome, but I hate those RTP characters and tiles. You have original portraits and monsters and systems, and truthfully, changing the game out of that RTP style would make this look a lot like a professional game, rather than an RMVX game. Sorry if that sounds rude at all, but the RTP is my greatest nemesis.

But, again, this looks pretty awesome. Can we see a demo anytime soon?

PS- I suggest not mentioning the difficulty and grind-ness as the third sentence of your post; it was one of the first things I read, and the developer telling me that the game will be excruciatingly hard right from the bat makes me not want to play. But I kept reading and changed my mind. smile.gif
erthia
@PJammaz
Thanks!

@squirrelmg
No worries about the feedback. I don't like the character sets myself. However, I am limited with resources. I am thinking of using rogue like sprites, but they won't be animated, but it will be like classic rpg which this game is intended to be anyways. I will change the sentence, thanks for the tip.

@Regashi
I will update the thread with more info. For the characters, I cannot give info because there are no set characters. You create them a the beginning. For the most part, most of the scripting in done by myself. However, I will credit the few scripts I did use. Graphics are mainly rtp but any extra has been made by myself. Same goes with the sounds.
amerk
By creating characters, do you mean selecting classes? If so, as a suggestion you could add a section for characters and explain this to the readers, and then maybe add some things about the different classes. If there are any major NPC's involved, you might even add a few of them without giving too many spoilers.

As for RTP, that seems to be a hit and miss for some. I've learned to accept them for what they are, but I can see other people's complaints about them as well. Although I have to say I like the screenshots posted, especially the two screens with the blurb of black screen around the walking characters.
erthia
Thanks for the feedback. I changed the entire overworld tileset with a new tileset edited and customized by myself. However, I am leaving standard rtp for dungeons because I think vx has good tiles for that. As for the sprites... I am still debating if I should make them roguelike (Still pictures but more western style, or id I should keep the anime characters. I also updated the interface. The updated screens are in the first post.
DNova1202
Well, I'd honestly do a mixture of western and eastern visual styles for your sprites. If you use a style that's too "anime" the project might look annoying and cliche' (like something out of an emo kid's wet dream). Your game looks very DandDish, in that it looks very Middle Earth (a term we used in my concept art class for that visual style), so if you're going to use anime influence at all, I'd recomend doing a blend.

Good luck man.
erthia
Thanks for the feedback. I was concerned with the anime myself. It does not fit in this kind of a game. I decided to go with the roguelike character sets. The updates can be seen in the first post.
erthia
Major update, the main engine is now in 3d. I have posted the screenshots in the first post.
Kai Emotionless
unless you can look up and down that's not 3d.
Kristovski
Technically you don't have to be able to look up and down, but be able to move up and down. While the graphics are not 3D, the gameplay is if you can move left and right, back and forth, and go up and down stairs.
erthia
Sorry for the lack of updates, I have been posting the mainly on my website. I have implemented new features such as the skill mastering system like i n Might and Magic. This includes: expert, master, and grandmaster attributes that can be taught by instructors throughout the world.

In addition, I have also created a Facebook Page for LOE:

Lastly, here is the latest video:

This looks to be coming along very nicely. And if you don't want naggers to nag, you can say the game is in 2.5D, which I'm assuming is the case.

...demo soon?
MagitekElite
(You might want to put all of those screenshots under a spoiler tag...)

I happen to love these kind of games. I remember play all sorts of them when I was little because that's all we had. xD
I really love the screenshots as well, very different than what is normally made tongue.gif

My god someone finally brought back the wizardry map system lol, I love seeing old school in this new world, this game looks like it could go somewhere...if you need help PM me.
erthia
Thanks for the feedback guys!

I have added most of the trainers across the world, added another region to the game, and enemies are now encountered on the map rather then random encounters.

Here is a video that shows the way enemies are encountered:

unless you can look up and down that's not 3d.

Pardon me while I go off on a rant. This is bullshit. Why would you say this? Surely you know that he means you can see in 3D space from the character's perspective. So why do you say this? To appear smart? Well, being smart has nothing to do with knowing that ray-tracing is 2D. That's not some kind of uncommon fact that a majority of people in this hobby don't already know anyway. Nothing personal and no insult intended, you just pressed a hot button...anyway, pardon me for speaking my mind.

Anyway, the game looks great. I'll be keeping an eye on it, eagerly awaiting the demo!
erthia
All of the outdoor maps are complete. Also, I have upgraded the skill system to make them more like Might and Magic 7. For instance, in order to become a Grandmaster in fire magic, you will have to be an archmage. The old method followed MM6 where whatever class can use the basic skill can GM the skill. I have also added four new classes to the game: Barbarian/Barbarian Chief/Warlord, Hunter, Ranger, Ranger Lord, Thief, Scout, Spy, and the Monk/Initiate/Master. That brings the total base classes to 11.

I also did some in game testing (about 20 hours now), and LOE feels like a cross between MM4/5(Xeen) and MM7. Those who enjoyed those games will find themselves at home with LOE once it is released.

Lastly, I created all of the class charts which shows the skill restrictions per class. You can check them out here:

Twin Matrix
Omg what is this how is it 3D I love you where's a demo I need one now? :0 The MM franchise is epic <3. Is Erthia your own design?
erthia
Thanks,

Unfortunately, there is no demo out yet, but progress is picking up. Erthia is my own idea, for it is actually the world I came up with over 10 years ago. It was the world I originally used in one of my Rpg Maker 2K games which did not get finished. Erthia came out before Erathia.

My goal is to create a game that can share the same experiences as Might and Magic. Therefore, I created the same skills system, magic system, weapons, classes, etc. As LOE stands right now, it feels like a cross between MM4/5 and MM7 based on what I have test played.

There has been many changes since I last posted here:

Here are some of the updates:

I have done some major updates over the last couple of months in regards to The Legend of Erthia Rpg.

The combat has now been changed to MM4&5 – World of Xeen. Monsters have multiple attacks and each character has their own battle menu.

LOE now has six characters as opposed to four. With the new combat, battles are much more difficult so it was necessary to add them. In addition, I also had to optimize and rebalance all of the monsters.

I added a class info window to LOE. It will allow you to see which skills each class can use and master.

I added the quick info window to game. It will show a list of your character’s main parameters, such as armor class and combat.

I have completed more promotional quests, and I have updated traveling by ship. More areas are now accessible. Also, I have about 18% of the game playable by the story.

Finally, here is the latest video that shows most of these new features, and I also updated the screenshot section on the site to reflect the changes.

There are many more! It has been a while since I posted here. Check out http://www.legendoferthia.com/ for the latest screenshots and more updates.

I guess the best way to describe it, is 2d.5. It resembles that of Might and Magic 4&5 - World of Xeen.

As a Might and Magic fan I am sooooo looking forward to this! biggrin.gif

(Like the Might and Magic VI music, hehe).

I've never played Might and Magic IV and V, however - so I'm not sure how different the combat is from VI and VII. I'm going to watch them on youtube in a bit. XD

I think you're doing a splended job so far. Keep up the good work.

*goes off to play VII*
erthia
Thanks for the replies. I love the Might and Magic series ever since I played MM6. Now I have played all of them but 1 and 2.

Here is the latest trailer. This video shows more of the world and the story rather then menus and such.

I am a huge fan of the Ultima games. It was a travesty that after the era of SNES all the good Ultima games were given up for more "Realistic" pursuits. Therefore, for the first time in recorded history, I want to play your game, and I want to play it bad. I have never wanted to play a RMVX game in the slightest but I am making an exception now.

Thanks for the feed back! There is no download yet sad.gif. However, progress is going smooth and faster. I am just about to put together some new screenshots of the new visual interface (windows skin).

EDIT: The new screenshots are up. Go to the first post to view them. Keep in mind, all screenshots in other posts will also reflect the changes.
Klokinator
Just curious, you've been working on this game for 5 years or so, right? Are you only planning to release it once it's complete, or are there going to be beta releases, or will you possibly even sell it (Since you can sell games made with RM as long as it's all your own custom graphics)?
erthia
I am still deciding on a demo. A lot of the graphics aren't custom, but even if they were I still wouldn't sell it. My goal is to create LOE for everyone to play and enjoy a good classic MM-like experience just for the sake of having fun playing the game! It would also be great if LOE builds a big fan base, for I'd love to make expansions after LOE.
Klokinator
I definitely think you've already outdone all the SNES and below games of this genre. I never played any games like this on later consoles so I can't speak for them, but this is genuinely my favorite type of dungeon crawler.

Have you ever considered making small, randomly generated dungeons? The kind where maybe an on-map "instance" (WoW term lol) sucks you up and puts you in a random dungeon? It might be real cool if you implemented a feature like that, increase replay value anyway.

Also, in them dungeons, you put tough enemies, an easy way out, but a massive treasure at the end for the daring players.
Lkmb98
I'm genuinely excited for this project. Can't wait for a release.
erthia
@Lkmb98
Thanks! I am glad I have your support.

@Klokinator
The random dungeons wouldn't be a problem to implement. However, LOE already has a fixed story and level structure, but I could make a random dungeon based spin-off once I am done.
Klokinator
Maybe just add some obscure out of the way caves then. I mean like, waaaaaaay out of the way caves, filled with high level demons and randomized dungeons.

Curious, will you be implementing multiple levels of dungeons, like in the Wizardry series where you have that one spell that can teleport you anywhere in the dungeon? (Even inside rock which always sucked XD) I'm pretty sure you are but I was just wondering. ALSO wondering how you'd implement that.

For me, the huge appeal of this is FINALLY getting a game like this with unlimited replay value. I can't tell you how many hours I wasted on Wizardry and that game was pretty fixed in many ways. While keeping a somewhat intact fixed route and playing style, it's even awesomer if you make as much randomized as possible. This may end up being the Elder Scrolls equivelent of Wizardry.
erthia
I could defined add some secret dungeons, kind of like Easter egg surprises! I remember in Ultima 7 there were a few good dungeons (not random but suprises) like that. As for the multiple levels of the same dungeon, it is more like Might and Magic - World of Xeen. There are lots of levels, but each level doesn't always have multiple floors. As for replay value, I think it will be high! There are lots of side quests, tons and tons of different types of treasure to be found, and a massive world to explore. However, as, mentioned earlier, I could definitely add them as a perk.

Thanks for the feedback!
Klokinator
Ithink it would be cool if the player, while most likely having a set level limit (99?) the enemies would not have that limit. In the potential mega-dungeons the enemies would always check your levels and be 10 levels higher, requiring you to improvise with some sort of legendary weaponry or something.
erthia
As it currently stands, there is no limit on the character levels. So far some of the more tougher creatures are reaching over level 200. As for the the mega dungeons, I think that is a good idea, for it will allow for some good challenge and th ability to gain some exp when all of the earlier creatures become obsolete.
erthia
Here the updates updates since December 24th 2011:

This is the latest trailer as of August, 8, 2012. This video shows all of the latest changes such as the new treasure skill and the higher resolution update. All of the music played in the background is from the LOE OST which I am also currently composing.

NOTES: There may be some lag in the video due to the recording software. SFX have been disabled for the video. There is an error while transferring items to other characters. The window is not in the proper position.

If it hasn't been said multiple times before, this looks outstanding and takes me back to a time when it was all about PC gaming (Eye of the Beholder, Might and Magic, etc). Seeing as how different this game will be to a lot of new players, are you planning a sort of strategy guide for this? Even if it's only to take the player through the first section of the game, it may be a nice addition to have as we sink our teeth into this.

That's all assuming this gets completed, of course.
erthia
Thanks Amerk!

I can definitely create some kind of a beginners quide. LOE can be a pretty complex game and has a huge non-linear world. In a lot of big rpgs you have a map that has a arrow pointing to where you need to go. LOE doesn't have that. You will have to explore and find stuff on your own. The map system is useful though. It will keep track of where you have been.

I have come to far to quit on LOE now! smile.gif I have most of the physical world created. Mechanics, equipment, scripts, etc are all created. I am mainly working on story, quests, and the remaining dungeons. All in all LOE currently has 55 maps completed which is comparable to Might and Magic VI.

Thanks again for the feedback!

Well, much has been completed since the last updated I shared. My dialogue and quest writer has now written 80 quests in total. I have all of of the promotion quests implemented into the database. I have added a few new creatures types to the bestiary. A few more dungeons have been created, and progress is moving along nicely.

Another important update is that, The Legend of Erthia is now going to be names, "Legend of Erthia - Armageddon." I am currently working on two LOE projects side by side this one which is Might and Magic inspired and Legend of Erthia - The Etheral Gate (Ultima inspired). Having the main title and subtitles will help distinguish between the too projects.

Below is an image of the new title, wallpaper, image of the free LOE - Armageddon OST (WIP) which you can download, and a video showing the new menu and two of the main compositions to the game (Main Theme and Armageddon). Thanks again, and I will try to post updates more frequently.

I have decided that I am also going to give LOE – Armageddon a UI upgrade. After working with LOE – The Etheral Gate, I had to do the same with LOE – Armageddon. In order to do this I had to make some changes to the game to get the best visuals.

The resolution has been converted back to the original, the party is now back to 4 members which will give some replay-ability in regards to trying new classes. I have also updated the way item and equipment names are displayed. EX: a sword will now be represented by an icon of a sword or the graphic in the grid inventory and the name “Crusader of Light + 5″ will be the weapon’s names.

Material and bonus info will be placed into the description fields. I had to do this because names were getting too long “Diamond Crusader Sword of Undead Slaying” and would get cut off.

I have also gave the main parameters (might, intellect, etc…) greater value in regards to bonuses for characters. I found in MM that they weren’t that useful. In LOE every point will count! Below are some screenshots of the changes. NOTE: The shop window still needs some adjusting in regards to labels (shown on the right are the incorrect parameters).

UPDATE: I was able to implement five heroes rather than four. Six still won't work.

erthia
Well, I have some real great news for LOE - Armageddon. Ubisoft has granted LOE - Armageddon permission to use the resources from MM4-8. This is a real burdin lifted off of my shoulder, and I can now work on LOE without any worry! I Owe a big thanks to Ubisoft for their kindness.

Here is the article on the LOE site:

Also, sorry for the missing pictures I most recently switched platforms for the LOE site. I will get the images back up ASAP!
