The story so far... (Updated 11/28/12)
It's another day in Bowser's Castle. The Koopa King is recanting his past glories to a script toad (stolen of course) as suggested by his advisor Kammy Koopa. It's going rather poorly. A Koopa servant bursts into the room with urgent news: "Your Ruthlessness, there are some weird things going down in the dungeon!" Annoyed with the incompetence of his minions, King Bowser heads down the fix the problem with Kammy right behind him. Little did they know that this little disturbance would become a big problem.

It isn't too long before a devious ploy by Kamort, Kammy's former apprentice, reveals his plan that'll put the world (and several others) into jeopardy

Characters
Bowser
The Koopa King who is surrounded by inferior beings (or so he says). Something's up in his castle and he doesn't want to take any chances.
Kammy
Bowser's advisor and servant. A loyal witch who follows Bowser into danger time after time.
Kammy
An apprentice Magikoopa who has found a new master. He returns to enact revenge on Bowser.

A plumber conscripted into repairing a Toad's roof. While on the job, he is summoned to the castle and the adventure begins.
Luigi
Mario's younger twin, helping his brother on the job. He too ends up on the quest of his life.
Princess Peach
The ruler of the Mushroom Kingdom. When trouble arrives, she summons the Kingdom's two bravest plumbers.
Toadsworth
The ever-worrying servant of the Princess. All he cares about is her safety.
Sir Spinalot
The pompous, pretentious, and loyal servant of King Bowser. He is a Spiny summoned by Kammy to aid her in her quest.
Kappin
Kool as a kukumber, Kappin is snarky and disrespectful. He is a Koopa Paratroopa summoned by Kammy to aid her in her quest.

Features: (Updated 11/28/12)
-Action Commands, Timed Defense & Field Skills
-Over 100 Badges to collect

This looks awesome, udivision! I will definately try this out. 126 MB... This is going to take a while to download...

Ok....well

I cant see the font

Interesting, interesting indeed. You have your work cut out for you if you intend to compete with actual Mario RPGs. Not saying that it is impossible to create a decent game though. Good luck.

The demo's here! The demo's here! woot.gif

I really liked Seven Sages, so I've been looking forward to playing this one.

Kinger:

Have you installed the font files?

Just a note . . . the demo crashed for me after I won the first battle (some audio file couldn't be found, I think). There are a few typos so far as well, the worst being "Canivingness." Oh, and in the word unsightliness, you drop the y and stick an i in there.

You need to include a list of credits.

We've made a Mario fan game before (it's on this forum even) but this one will be even closer to the actual games!

Credits added, sorry about that!

I've given this a test, and I have to say this pretty awesome. The gameplay is very well handled, and the humor of past SM RPG games is present. My only complaints so far (just two) are:

In the Intro, you have to wait for the Gigasoft and Luigi/Mario/Bowser antics before the menu for new game, continue, and exit pop up. This was funny the first time around but gets old fast. Is there a way to skip over this and go directly to the startup menu? If not, I would suggest adding something to skip this.

I can't remember from previous SM RPG games if the characters moved so slowly, but Bowser seems to be extremely sluggish. Perhaps an increase in speed, if even by a small fraction, may go a long way.

Other than that, excellent start so far. Looking forward to more of it.
udivision
If you have a save file, you can skip the intro.

Um, Bowser move's as fast as any RPG Maker XP character. We'll consider changing it, but it seems good to me.

New Gameplay & Battle Video

Enjoy!
Holder
How much Gameplay approx does the demo have? Just asking because I could move this into the Long Demos section if it's over 1.5hours and would be ready for an Official Preview.
udivision
I think it's 1 to 1.5 hours, so it might not be ready for that yet.
Holder
That would be okay, it's borderline so at this stage it's up to you.
If you think it's presentable for a preview you can just PM a moderator of this section to get it moved or when it's ready.

The game looked superb happy.gif

I love the Seven Sages so much and I will definitely love this game!
udivision
Thanks. A lot has changed since the demo and hopefully we can have a demo out sometime soon showcasing that.
carloswith47
Super Mario is my favourite game. This is very popular game all over the world. There are many versions of this game are come one by one. The new version Super Mario Galaxy is very exiting. Now the Super Mario is come in 3D. This is its one more advantage.
udivision
Could a mod move this to long demos?
Demo 2.0.2 is out and about 5 hours.

Just a quick suggestion, "Starlight" would be the correct spelling, unless "lite" was intentional. I've heard other people spell it "lite" but I thought I'd mention it.

Incidentally, I liked the first game a lot, being a fan of every mario RPG game ever released. It was especially reminiscent of Mario and Luigi superstar saga.
C-Division
"Lite" was intentional. If you at all like Seven Sages, you'll definitely like this game.
Timed Hits, timed defense, combo attacks, etc.
What more do you need, lol?
udivision
The "ite" was chosen because "ite" seems to denote a substance. (Magicite, Carbonite, Malachite, Pelagicite, Nethycite, etc...)

Of course the "lite" can be interpreted as "light" as well, creating the wordplay the title is based around.

Now moving to Long Demos
squirrelmg
Well, this game sounds awesome. Is there an expected release date? Or could you approximate how much progress you have made so far?
udivision
I'm not going to make the mistake of suggesting release dates, but I will let you know how far we are.

Right now, the game (demo) is about 5 hours long, with 3 chapters and a prologue. During this period, you collect 1 Starlite Crystal, and as you can imagine, you'll end up collecting several of these throughout the course of the game (however it's not really a fetch quest like Seven Sages, our first game was). The pacing of Starlite Worlds is a lot better, and I'd hazard a guess that the full game will have a chance of being 20+ hours long. Long story short, 25%-ish percent or less.
NewHope
This is an awesome game so far. I love the fluid animations of both the heroes and the enemies, the custom battle system, the plot, everything! You really did a good job at making this a "Mario" game! biggrin.gif

But, there is one gripe I have with the battle system. I have a REALLY hard time guarding. I've tried to practice guarding just with easy enemies like goombas, and no matter what, I cannot get the timing right. I guard about only 1 out of 40 attacks. For me, that's pathetic. And I try to find the right timing to do it, but still it doesn't want to work. I consider myself to have decent timing skills in video games. For example, I was pretty good at superguarding in Paper Mario TTYD, yet I can hardly pull off a regular guard in this game. Does anyone else have this problem? It can't be just me. Maybe you should extend the number of frames just a little to make it a little easier to guard. Because at this state, it's almost impossible to do it. And yes, I'm pressing the correct button to guard just so you know! tongue.gif
C-Division
Thanks for your comments. It's very appreciated.
Just to be clear, the battle system isn't "custom" because it's still based on SBS tankentai XP,
but U Division has made many scripting changes to it and I made all the eventing additions to the point
that it's a system we call our own.

You're very right about the timing difficulty. It's been changed and fixed, but these changes aren't in the demo and you
probably won't be able to see it until the next release. Just know that it's fixed I guess.

I was wondering about what people thought about Peach having her own sort of arc. There will come a time
when she has to do something. Do you guys that part to be completely playable and her have a party and have battles, or
are you tired of changing parties and do you want the focus to stay on M&L?
Kwrpg32
I'll imperatively be trying this game; will post how it goes.

From what I see in the screenshots, it looks like M&L but is virtually reminiscent to the Paper Mario (particularly TTYD) series. Definitely going to be fun for me. :3
Bill Nye
I support you guys.
I loved seven sages, best RPGMaker game i ever played.
I wonder, will we get cool suits like in the seven sages?

Wow, that's pretty much exactly what we're going for. It's our own system, but it resembles M&L in graphics, but is closer to PM in mechanics.

@Bill Nye,
The completely customizable badge system effectively replaces suits. You can use a lot of fire related badges (including skills) to create a "fire suit" or etc...
Bill Nye
Hmm, i might be being very mean to myself, but i'm gonna wait till the game is finished.
Also, good to know we will see the return of some of the best RPGMaker users, it'll be years till i see mario and luigi 4...
If they plan on making it, that is.

Kwrpg32
Huh. I played it and I was pretty much correct.
Yay for the tale-telling screenshots! 8D

In any case, I have very few complaints about this game.

One of them may just be because of my computer, but during most cutscenes (even short things like a camera transition across an area after hitting a switch) and during battle I get some pretty big in-game lag.
The other thing would be the in-game music; I wasn't exactly impressed by the choice of song. For example, the normal M&L3 theme would've worked better than what seems to be the remix in the game.
There was nothing that really hindered the gameplay though, other than the somewhat unsmooth controls, but you can get used to it sooner or later.

Now for some praise: This game's direct gameplay is excellent. Excellent, I daresay! No, really, I've already taken that much of a liking to it. Although that may be because I really like the Mario RPG games. xD
C-Division
Thanks a lot for the quick feedback.
Performance has been an issue for some people (myself included) because it seems like
rpg maker xp does a bad job of utilizing a computer's capabilities. If we can find an anti-lag
script that works well, we will use it.

Btw, the battle music is the MIDI version of the ML3 battle song so that's why it's worse and low quality.

Ah, I see.

Also, I'll see what happens if I try running the game different ways.
NewHope
Awesome! Glad you are going to "upgrade" the guarding system. I took a look into the guarding mechanics of the game, and I did find that sometimes, it is impossible to guard (because the star graphic does not change, even when increasing the time frame of guarding). So, I'm glad that bug is being worked out. As for the lag in the game, it really all depends on the speed of your computer. I myself had no experience of lag in the game, but then again, my computer isn't slow either... tongue.gif

And I find the idea of Peach being able to do something in the game interesting. In my opinion, I think it would be cool to have her own party.

Again, this game is very fun to play so far, and I cannot wait for the next demo to come out! wink.gif

Updates:

-There's a new download link for those who haven't played demo 2.02. It's one file instead of two, and is about 207mb

-In terms of progress, the game length is currently about 10-15 hours. To put that into perspective, that's about as long as the entirety of Seven Sages, and we're only a little past halfway!

-Every chapter in the game has it's own flavor, and you'll find that it's never just Dungeon -> Artifact -> Repeat. Thanks to C Division, the most enjoyable part of the game just might be the humor and characters.

Finally, a new video showing off some mini-games you'll see throughout the game.
