Full Version: Can no longer open current project!

My project, "AFTER" has been in development for four months. It has origional character graphics, music, ect. but it's never caused a problem. Yesterday I added about ten to twelve different maps (only using graphics that came with the RPG VX package) , and maybe 20 events spread throughout them. This morning, I couldn't open the project. When I try to open it, it gives a message saying "Unexpected file format." and when i ran it as an administrator, it made me input the serial and activation codes again. It still refuses to open. HELP! I've put a lot of effort into this project. Even worse, I tried creating a separate project, assuming that eventually the project would be fixed, and I could copy some maps between projects. And now, after saving my other project, I discovered that I can't open that one either! I can only open the projects that I haven't saved in two days. I can open the shadow doubles of my projects and cut my losses, but I'm afraid that if I save them the same problem will apply. Has anyone else had this problem, or does an administrator know what to do?

I would save the game files to a disc first! Make sure you still know your activation codes and such. This is because I would reinstall the program. The program might have became corrupted when you correctly launched it last I would also scan the your rpgvx folders before so. You might have gotten malware or other viruses and it just now activated. This would be a cause to the games no being able to open. Also scan your whole computer for it might be in the registries, you do have a virus.

I hope this helps out some.

Thanks for the advice! I saved my project folder to a cd and I'm running a virus scan. If that doesn't work, I'll re-install it. I'll put another post after that and tell you if it worked or not.
Ghun
Alright good luck. smile.gif
KD648
No luck unfortunately. Virus scan came up clean, so I uninstalled and re-installed the software. Still won't open up. Any other suggestions? I REALLY hope I don't have to redo this. But I'm not even sure how long I could work on any project without the same problem popping up...

I am trying to figure out what I did to fix my problem. I had the same issue before. Do you have another computer you can put in the disc and install the editor on that and see if it will open on that computer? (If you haven't already done that.)
KD648
I don't, sorry. I've only got one computer.

I would have made a new project and then copy all the files from the bad project to the good one. Graphics, Data, Audio, everything. With the data files, one file at a time.
poisonshift
I've had this happen before. Even one file wrong in the directory can cause an error.

KD648, can you run VX by opening it's .exe?
KD648
Thank you Stripe. I tried copying the files, but it didn't work right. Poison, you're going to have to help me with the .exe. I'm not really a computer person. How would I open a program from the .exe?
poisonshift
I'm just trying to get you to open VX without opening a project.
KD648
All right. It's open, and there's no project loaded.
poisonshift
Ok, so that means that it isn't the program that is messed up... Open up vx again and go to File > Open Project and find the project you're trying to open.
KD648
K. Found it.
poisonshift
Did that work? I don't think we're going to have much luck recovering your data. You may be able to save your maps and such, but not your programming...
KD648
Well crap. It still won't open. Do you know if there's a 'save as' button? If so, I can just open a shadow copy and save it somewhere else. See what happens. I emailed support too, but they haven't gotten back to me yet...
KD648
There's really no point in STARTING anything until I can figure out what I need to fix. Otherwise, the same thing will just happen again and waste more of my time. I've already practically deconstructed the entire game from outside VX just trying to figure out whats wrong, it's going to take days to just get it back to the way that it was.
poisonshift
Well, in the future just make a copy every day, replacing the old copy. I just did this with my current project. I've been searching but I haven't found anything to help you. I'm very sorry. I had this happen with my first project, and I didn't use VX again for months. I wish you the best and I hope you find some resolution. If I find anything I will be back to let you know. And if you figure out what happened and how to fix this, please let us know.

Good luck
KD648
Thanks very much! I'll just have to keep up the attempts! Out of curiosity, did it ever happen again/ how long have you been problem free?
poisonshift
I haven't had any issues since that one occurrence. From what I understand, this sort of thing happens at random.
