I want to make it so the battle back changes depending on which terrain you're treading on. For example: in an overworld, if you step in the forest, I want the battle to be in a forest. Or if you step in a desert, I want to fight in a desert setting. And so on and so forth...

Well the only thing I could think of would be to set events that run on event touching all around the layers of the forest, changing the battle background to what you want, and make it activate a switch, 001: Forest for example. Make another event on the outside of the event wall you set up in the forest, make it change the background back to grassland.
I figured out a less complicated way in the middle of that and am too lazy to revise, so:
1. Make Player Touch activated events around where you want the background to change *To change a background go to Change Map Settings*
2. Surround the Events again, and do the same thing, changing it back to what the background previously was.
Easy.

In a parallel common event, you can set a variable to the player's current terrain tag and change the battle back accordingly. You can assign terrain tags to tiles in the database.
