I thought I would have a play around in paint, when I was younger I used to paint in acrylics or plain old pencil and paper. I have never tried using paint so forgive me if these are very basic.

[Show/Hide] Doodles</div><div style="margin: 0px; padding: 6px; border: 1px inset;"><div style="display: none;">

</div></div></div>
Okay let me have it, critique.

Wowow, as expected from a western generation not influenced by japanese comics at all. It was time we see some old school stuff here.
Well done Kaz.
Edit: The girl looks quite human to me. Good job.

O:!!! KAZ IS AN ARTISTE!! :3!!! Did you use good old handy MS Paint for these? :3? They're so wonderful to see! I especially like that first one, a complete scenery picture in paint is really something to see, I like the figures and that skkyyy O_O I can't even get clouds looking that good with some fancy tools in Open Canvas lol. And I love the way you shaded the shirt in the bottom picture :3 It's super well shaded, the folds and everything is just awesome! Now that we know you're an artist we will be anxiously waiting for updates >=D

Thanks peeps
@Santa
Yes I am pretty much an old school artist.
@ Homu
It was your tutorial that inspired me to have a go, and yes it is good old MS paint.
I always enjoy painting folds and feathers, I used to paint birds a lot.
I have being mulling over getting a tablet or stocking up on my pencils and paper again.

Hey! I like this stuff. Is that the spray paint tool in paint? I didn't ever think of using it to try to get results like that. Very nice shading in general on everything.
Gotta go now but I might have more to say later.

Yes it is the spray tool, very Renoir looking effect, but it is good for foliage and clouds.

I really like the first picture...alot. It's amazing that people can do stuff like this by using MS Paint.
Nice work Kaz

Nice pictures!

It is quite difficult with the mouse, and I keep changing the pictures around. Not sure which one to carry on working with here.

Hmm... I suggest you try to stick with the Draft 1 style.
I like the wind effect that you gave on that picture.
..but that's just my personal feeling though.

Yeah I like the first one the best. I don't know why. Maybe it feels more "dynamic" or something?

May 18 2009, 06:42 PM
They're both nice, but I particularly like the first one. Very cool impressionist thing you have going there.
Drake0038
May 18 2009, 06:57 PM
Definitely the first one, in my opinion, is best. The 2nd one the island(?) seems really isolated, the 3rd one is very... solid/plain.
But like Hero had said, the first one feels more "dynamic", more "alive" in a way. I especially like the way the clothes flow behind her very naturally.

Yeah I like draft one, as well as the first picture.
Really nice work.

Draft one is the best I think. I shows more clarity.
You seem to be pretty good in a traditional sense. One thing to remember, though, is that the eye is NOT a football D: If you are trying to draw more realistic eyes then try to look at the eye a little more closely. Eyelashes would not come directly from the eye itself, but from a rim on the lids.
For the first picture you posted in the thread, I think it may be better if you strengthened or sharpened some areas, or maybe add in more detail to the closer objects than the farther objects. I believe it would improve the sense of depth it's meant to create. Also, I don't recommend using pure black. The effect it has flattens out the image.
kaz
May 19 2009, 02:05 PM
I am a traditional artist yes, I think Santa pointed out that I am not into cartoon or modern type art. Using the computer is a whole new idea for me and I suppose I tried to emulate what I would have done with painting in acrylics.
I am a a Renoir fan so that why the first one is very much impressionist style, however I could play with it and see how it would look with more sharper edges.
As for the black, yes I am a great fan of dark colours I can perhaps break it up a little.
The eye you are right needs some work, it needs an eye socket and lid I feel.

I've actually been practicing the western style also, Draft 1 reminds me of all those old school sierra adventure games for some reason.
I like it >: D

Been working on both the landscape and the draft ones Not liking the colour in the landscape figures much, but not sure which colours to use.
Found this photo of some pottery I painted
[Show/Hide] I painted this in acrylics a few years ago, photo taken on phone. For anyone who knows Rush, it is the cover from Fly by Night
[Show/Hide] The same image using the flash on the phone (need a new camera)

Jolly good show. I haven't seen anybody use MS Paint like that before and the effect is awesome. I'd love to see what you can do with Photoshop and a tablet. Keep it up!
Darkblade
May 23 2009, 03:38 PM
You sure do have some skill Kaz.
And yeah, I agree with Darkling, that would be epic.
I like the pottery painting, its not often I see stuff like that.
I have been playing around in Gimp, thanks HOH for suggesting it
I am still working on the hard edges at the back, but find the blending tools brilliant.

Hey, very nice stuff! You seem to be getting into using GIMP very easily, that's good

I really like the look of both of those (you can shade better than me lol). Nice hair.

The beach scene is splendid. Did you use the local beach as an inspiration? When are you getting a tablet?

Like Hero said, your shading is really good. It's tough with a mouse but try using a thinner brush for the finer details in the hair. It makes a huge difference but its time consuming.

I am getting a tablet when i receive my first pay cheque at the end of July, unless I use the credit card.
It is useless trying to get fine detail with the mouse, I will however have a play with that and see how it comes out.

Kaz, you are awesome, that beach is fantastic.
I love how you've done the clouds and that Island in the background.
Thank you darkblade, I love doing skies in gimp it is so easy to blend.
Might try a sunset next.

I'm more than unbelievably impressed by this Kaz, sorry I've not posted in here previously. Absolutely fantastic it seems you push any program you use to great heights. Can't wait to see your work with a tablet, it's a bit odd at first to use one but I can see you doing it no problem.
That beach one reminds me of pictures my mam used to have up, I think it's the black thin lines that are reminding me of them so much.
The face one looks a bit pale-ish but it is nicely done, I kinda like the hair like that without heaps of detail.

Wow, that drawing is an epic win

I'm not that great of an artist, but from what I can see, it has that classic feel, if you know what I mean, like freely-drawn. Well, basically, its really good, nice job, Kaz

Seriously, I love this thread! Your art is so wonderful to see, it's such a nice and refreshing break from the norm :3 Everyone here is amazing, don't get me wrong, but this is such a completely different kind of art from everything else here. Wow it looks like you're a natural using a tablet Kaz, a hint of yellow onto those clothes would make it look a bit more mystical and glowy (Hey it's a word).
Could I suggest something? That it's on a branch of a withered tree with a dotted light effect, don't ask me why but that's what I imagine it ending up like

Aug 18 2009, 02:00 PM
Woah! That's awesome! I'm liking your style, Kaz. Something I'd lke to see is a background of some sort behind the drawing, it would give a nice effect. Wow, great job on the coloring, Kaz!

The fairy gets a background- but loses definition- hmm I am in danger of overworking this.
Darkblade
Aug 20 2009, 12:52 PM
Its good, but I think the background kind of... makes it more modern art looking.
I liked the previous ones, because it reminded me of something you'd see in a fairy tale book.
Its still well drawn, I like it, but not as much as the previous ones.

I think you are right- I feel she lost some of her quaintness in the process.
Or maybe I tried to achieve a modern style without really thinking?
I prefer using the tablet for line drawings like the original - maybe with a light colour wash for definition?
Thanks for the quick feedback
