Plot Synopsis
"All my life I longed to leave my farming village, I wanted to see what was out there. The outside world seemed so wonderful... or at least at the time it did. Little did I know I would get more than I bargained for."

Mokensen: The Swordsman is a story about Taite Winchester's dream of a better life. Due to several tragic events in his childhood and early teens, Taite has became sick of his hometown, Whitnell. He wants to leave, and see what the outside world is like. When he does leave, he is thrown into situations he could never have imagined. Meeting several friends and making some enemies along the way, Taite's determination is tested in his journey to discover what the world is like.

Story

Mokensen, a world of military unrest. The two major powers, the Stralian Empire and the Bondel Empire, have entered negotitations for peace between their empires. Despite the Stralian Empire's best efforts, the negotiations break down and it results in all out war between the two empires. However, day by day, the Bondel Empire gains a stronger and stronger foothold in Stralian territory. Puzzled, the Stralian Empire employs a special task force to investigate the mass upheavel of the Bondel's military. However, the task force uncovers something they would never have thought possible and discovers how the Bondel forces are winning the war so easily.

Characters

Taite Winchester:

Age: 18
Weapon: Sword
Bio: Born and raised in the isolated town of Whitnell. Throughout his childhood and early teens, Taite experienced several tragedies when his father was killed and his mother died from grief a year afterwards. His sixteen year old brother, Ken, left Taite and Whitnell when Taite was only 13 years old. Once Taite reached the age of 18, he decided that he was going to leave Whitnell, mainly to get away from the horrible memories of the place but also to explore the outside world. Upon reaching the North Whitnell Forest, Taite ran into two men, Rowen and Edgar, who reluctantly agreed to show Taite the outside world so long as he helped them. Even though he is starting what is going to be the hardest journey of his life, Taite is filled with optimism. Taite uses his physical strength more than anything else, so he has very little magic attacks.

Rowen Iverson:

Age: 23
Weapon: Bow
Bio: A mysterious man with a past shrouded in mystery, his deadly accuracy is useful against nimble enemies. Rowen meets Taite in the North Whitnell Forest when he is trapped by a river. He reluctantly agrees to let Taite travel with him into the outside world. After leaving Taite in the village of Kayen, it is revealed that Rowen is travelling with Edgar to find a way to close up Pandora's Box, which was opened up by his and Edgar's mistake. He also knows Taite's brother, Ken, and manages to lure Taite to him.

Edgar Anderson:

Age: 25
Weapon: Two-handed Sword
Bio: An experienced warrior who has trained under the command of one of the best warriors in the world. Edgar meets Taite for the same reasons as Rowen. Edgar is easily aggrovated and commonly uses violence to sort out his problems. He has a close friendship with Rowen. They both are searching for a way to close Pandora's Box, which was opened by their mistakes.

Gwen Clarke:

Age: 17
Weapon: Staff
Bio: Formerly a part of a travelling circus troupe. Her knowledge of Black Magic is a great asset when fighting elementally weak enemies. Gwen meets Taite when she is stranded after missing her ride back to the Stralian Continent. She travels with Taite to the Stralian Continent and when she cannot find her missing circus troupe, she decides to travel with Taite, in hope of finding them.

Landon Philips:

Age: 25
Weapon: Spear
Bio: Well-known historian in Linarme. His reasons for being in Port Elru are unknown. He is on board the S.S. Elru when it is attacked by a sea creature and destroyed. However, there is something that he is not letting on about.

Naomi Wilkins:

Age: 18
Weapon: Staff
Bio: Well trained in all forms of White Magic, assisting on your journey. She is one of the very few who survive the S.S. Elru's destruction, along with Taite, Gwen and Landon. Travels with Taite until he reaches Linarme and she then returns to her church in the Linarme Castle. Believing that Linarme has lost the war with Bondel, she leaves Linarme with Taite & Co and decides to stay with him.

Ken Winchester:

Age: 21
Weapon: ???
Bio: Taite's older brother. From a young age, Ken dreamed of exploring the world beyond his village. His attempts to escape however led him to see his own father's death and watch his mother waste away a short while after. His younger brother Taite always looked up to him, and looked to him for guidance in those hard times. At the age of 16, he left Whitnell and his brother behind. However, in the 5 years he's been in the outside world, he's caused some major trouble...

I would appreciate any feedback people can give me about my game, it will all go towards making it better! Thank you!
Dark Gaia
Wow! Decent story, custom tiles, custom characters, and a great presentation in the thread. I will play this tomorrow and give feedback for sure. Even before playing this looks great. The mapping is detailed, yet not cluttered, the menu/systems look great and that's the smarmiest use of the Takentai system I've seen outside my own game! It's like you sucked Legionwood's good parts out and enhanced em!

Looks like Legionwood has some competition!

(Only from you l33tpie! But when the new revamped Legionwood demo comes out...)

You say that at every decent VX game's thread. Stop, it's annoying.

Your mapping's pretty good, I like it. I also like the enemy battlers. Where'd ya get those o.o
l33tpie 6
@Dark Gaia: Thanks for your comment! I hope that my game will be good enough for you and many other people as it is probably my best attempt at a VX game in a while.

@xephyr: Thanks, I do regard my mapping as one of my stronger points in RPG Making. I got the enemy battlers in a set from a friend. He said they were from one of the first few Final Fantasies.
Dark Gaia
I recongnized them. They are. In Legionwood I'm using ones from RPG Maker Advance. It's good as nobody recognies them from any game. If you would like I can send you the set? It will improve your game to replace the game battlers with custom ones.

Also, a question: I downloaded the special battle poses for my characters to use in Tankentai (like your ones) so how do I set them up? Do I name Lann's sets $lann_1, $lann_2 and $lann_3 for example?

@xephyr:

I only ever said that to two games. I consider Legionwood to be a very good game. Thus I only say it to games I think match that quality.
l33tpie 6
Hmm, I would like that, Dark Gaia. I have been struggling to find good enemy battler sprites. Also to answer your question, yes I do believe you would simply have to name it $lann_1, $lann_2,$lann_3. I simply left my character sets the same names as they were when I downloaded them and they worked perfectly fine. It may take a bit of trial and error but you'll most likely get it quite easily.
Dark Gaia
Okay, well I'll try that. And I upload those battlers and PM them to you now. You will need to Import each one into RMVX via RMVX though as transparency is not set yet.
BlackMask
Dont like legion wood but One Night oh my god that was awsome
l33tpie 6
BlackMask, please keep the posts on topic. Also, has anyone tried the demo? Maybe I'm expecting too much for the first 24 hours but I thought this game would get more replies...
Dark Gaia
Well.... This is l33tpie's game, so you shouldn't really say it in his forum. But thanks anyway. Wait til you see the new Legionwood demo...

On topic: Just noticed the userbar now. Adding to my sig as I post this. If Photobucket will hurry and load...

@l33tpie: Hardly anyone plays in the first 24 hours of being online. Comments won't start coming in for about 3 days at least, is what I find is the normal rate. I'm DLing right now though.
BlackMask
On topic you game is decent Not as good as 1 night like your idea's but your logic is funky

[Quote] Edgar meets Taite when he and Rowen are trapped in the North Whitnell Forest due to a river.
Rowen firsts meets Taite when he and Edgar are stranded in the North Whitnell Forest.

Yeah how dose that work you got to use logic before you post if you want i'll support your game if you let me fix up you map there low lvl you need to work on your maps

Off topic DarkGaia do you have a support one night banner love to "Rock That "

Dark Gaia
Actually, no, I don't have on yet. It's a side project so I never made one.

On Topic: You can't really compare l33tpie's game to One Night. One is an RPG and one isn't. They have two totally different gameplay styles. From now on, if you have a comment about One Night, please put it in the One Night topic.
l33tpie 6
BlackMask, I think it is very obvious that this game is not the quality of something like One Night, as Dark Gaia is an experienced game maker whereas I am relativley a newbie to the whole RPG making. However, I am working towards getting better at it. Also, yes I realise the poor logic of my first post, I unwisely made and posted this topic at midnight, therefore I was tired and not thinking it properly. I will fix this. And about my maps, maybe you could provide some ideas on how to improve them instead of just saying they're low level.
BlackMask
Ok mapping simple less tree's and more detail

[Praise] you story line is really good

fix taite's face it look's kinda wonky
l33tpie 6
Which maps are you talking about? If it's the one in the first screen shot, that map is a forest, forests have to have lots of trees. If it's the last screenshot, then, yes I have begun to edit the map and de-forest it quite a bit.
Ziosin
Don't do that double post/link to another game topic thing blackmask.

Just downloaded the demo, gonna eat something then I'll try it out. Looks very good so far.
l33tpie 6
It's times like these I wish I was a moderator. BlackMask, you're just plain spamming now, there was no need to post again.
Dark Gaia
If he spams again, I'll do something about it.
Ziosin
So far the game is coming together swimmingly. I like the characters, and I'm pretty fond of your mapping style.
I compiled fixes and advice together for you.

[Show/Hide] To be fixed (contains some spoilers)
Alright. So far I've run into:

-TONS of runaway text. In the text editor, you can only type up to the first arrow when using a faceset, or when not using a faceset up to the second. and always click preview before assuming it's ok. Fix the text, because I can't understand half of the dialog. This is consistent throughout the entire demo.

-After finishing training, you have to leave to the forest, but there's nothing that tells you that you can go behind the mountain. A little confusing at a glance, but do-able in the long run.

-Upon entering the forest, the BGM changes. When you immediately go back to the last area, the BGM doesn't change back to the town theme.

-When talking to Edgar and Rowen for the first time (introduction to them) Edgar says "... this crystal is a Crystal." Without the coloring, it could make Edgar sound really dumb. Almost like Aeris and "This guy are sick" in FFVII.

-Finding a bridge making kit is a little... easy. How about expanding the forest a little and looking for suitable pieces of wood instead? The bridge making kit made that part of the forest no problem at all, when in fact, you want me to be challenged.

-Toward the end of the demo, Rowen and Edgar seemed to have completely forgotten that they were going to abandon the main character in the first place. Instead, they act as if he's an old old friend who's been traveling with them for a long time.

-Try including a couple of side quests. That wouldn't hurt in the least. Making a straightforward storyline could slowly lose the player's attention. It's always a refreshing change of events with a side quest.

-This demo took me 20 minutes tops to beat. Don't advertise it to be an hour unless it's really an hour.

EDIT: Sorry about the multiple repeats, My internet isn't at its best right now.
demonlord5000
Yeah it looks really good. Didn't want you to think I didn't notice this lol. I plan on testing it, but I will need 2-3 days. I have been relatively busy, and I still need to test one night for gaia. It does have a really good representation though, and you are even relatively new to rming! I would definetly say gaia has some competition on the way.

Edit: After looking at your screenies more carefully, your battlers seem to be flying.

I welcome that. I'm just happy that people are releasing good games for ME to play. As good as my games are, they can't entertain ME.
BlackMask
Some More critics add a girl main to your game with all boy party is not fond of by many people

Have a girl evens out the game so it's not a sausage fest
(not to be mean

Another thing i agree with zepher about many aspects of your game get a skill work on it and make it your thing then make a team of good people and your game's will be godly (i know your a noobie so this is some advice for the future so your next game with be even better)

Again I congratulate you on your story it seem thought out and had a keen eye for detail and make me think about mine But??
your character's are like cardboard they have no back round not real emotion. Show you have good idea's (need to convey you smartitude in a more efficient manner) All in all i like your game but i will not support it till you fix that

1.MORE LIVELY CHARACTERS !!!
2.More self made resources (give the feeling of look at my hard work) i enjoy doing this
3.touch up your story to convey emotion's better
4.Fix Taite's face is so Arghhhh !!!

Edited
demonlord5000
Hey black, mind making your posts longer and typing a little better? It seems like your first language isn't english and I can understand that, but the way they are they can seem like spam. Just some advice for you when you make future posts. They can also be a little hard to understand what you meant.

When you say add girls to the game, do you mean more girl main chars, or npcs? Well, when you answer, it might be easier to understand you if ya type a bit more carefully.
xephyr14
I started playin. The only thing I don't like is that the game is very close to mine in a way. Same character sprites, same batllebacks, same battle system, but they are public resources so what can i do about it? It's just a little gripe on my part, it's still a good game.
Dark Gaia
How do you think I feel? My game is based around the exact same graphics he used, although we both chose different sprites for the main characters. I too use those sprites, battlers, battlebacks and systems.
BlackMask
Gaia your masterful and he called himself a noob and you have that self made feeling to your game he's not so much since it's his first yeah
If he want's i 'll help him on his next game if he uses xp

They're pretty much the best graphics you can get for VX right now, so it's pretty understandable.

MoonlightX32
Just played through it, it took me about 20 minutes.

First of all, the maps look pretty nice and the storyline gives me the impression that I'm going to be getting interested. (Within the first 20 minutes I can't really say anything has really grabbed me yet, but not every game has to start with a bang)

A couple of things I would suggest tweaking a little bit... I'd work on improving the dialogue a bit and give the characters more of a personality. Of course, it is only 20 minutes, so again, I'm sure it will get better. Nothing has really happened story-wise in the demo so it's kind of hard to judge your presentation of the story. We just know that he's leaving the village. Also, I would rethink the boss music, but that's entirely up to you. For me, it seemed pretty out of place and doesn't really fit the mood presented by the rest of the game. (Did anyone else feel this way? I tend to think very deeply into the musical aspect of games smile.gif )

Anyway, nice so far. Interested to see how this goes. biggrin.gif

Guess what? You just got a ban!

I don't know what your problem with me is, l33tpie and Demonlord are my friends, they accept that I am joking around and that although I make good games I am happy for them too. There was no need to flame me like that.

When your ban is lifted in about 678 years from now, you'd best mind your tongue against staff and to not troll that way.
l33tpie 6
Whew! This thread has been quite busy in my absence! Thank you to everyone who has played the demo and provided feedback. My router died yesterday and I am quickly using my mum's computer with her USB internet. I'll be able to answer more questions once I get a new router and get some more development done, too. Thanks again!
Dark Gaia
I played it l33tpie. I liked it, perhaps a bit too short and some nooby features DO show such as text running off and so on, but I did enjoy it. Basically, everything aside from what has already been pointed out was good. The mapping was decent, the battles were fairly well balanced and so on...

However, two things I would change:

1. Turn off the shadows for the enemy battlers in battle. The battlers themselves already have shadows so in effect you're adding a shadow to a shadow. Not good looking.

2. Rethink the difficulty of your quests. Come on l33t, getting a Bridge Repair Kit? You've played Legionwood, so you should know how to make an interesting dungeon involving bridges.
l33tpie 6
Yes, I have taken Ziosin's advice and made certain pieces of wood in the forest suitable for making a bridge. I also wrote down everyone's suggestions so that I may get some progress done even without the internet. There are just some things I want to clear up quickly...

@Ziosin: If you had looked in my first post, you would have noted the list of bugs/errors, the only one currently being the misleading demo time statement. But your other comments will be useful in development. Thanks.

@BlackMask: I really do not understand what you mean about Taite's face. I cannot spot anything wrong with it and no-body else has said anything about it. It may just be your personal preference?
Dark Gaia
I didn't notice anything wrong with his face either...

But, it's good to hear that you are noting suggestions. This game is promising, and with tweaking will be something to watch, so I eagerly await what is to come of it.
BlackMask
Well what i mean about his face is it's ugly seriously not flaming but you should draw your own face scan it and beg some 1 to color it for you i'm kinda paranoid so it might just be my personal preference you don't have to fix it i don't really care it's just a suggestion biggrin.gif
Dark Gaia
It's not ugly. It was made by the same artist who made his characters and all his other faces. It was designed to fit the characters and the style of the other faces so really you can't replace it with something else or it will look out of place.
Michael
Where did you create/get these graphics? If there's a program to create the map graphics and Faces, Also show or tell me how to add custom maps. I have one, anyway if you know/create graphics/faces please PM me. I know alot about event designing but not that. also I love story but there's a error. The text is out of the screen just to tell you!

thanks,
UltiHaker
Dark Gaia
The graphics can be found on DM Bdotto's japanese site. L33tpie had a link to this topic in his thread but I removed as the site has now disapeared. The only way you can now get these graphics is to have them given to you.

To add custom tilesets, just place the custom tileset in your Graphics/System folder of your game.
l33tpie 6
Alright, with all things considered, I am announcing that Demo Version 2 will be ready within 2 months. This is mainly due to the fact that I am going back to school next week and I do not know how much homework I will have. However, the features of the next demo are as follows:

1. 1-2 hours playtime, depending on how fast you go through. Side-Quests will also be avaliable in the next demo, they will provide a nice break from the main story for the player. I might add in a Quest Journal for this, too.

2. Dialogue will be improved, characters will have more defined personalities, drawing the player into the game.

3. The North Whitnell Forest will be harder, logs will have to be found in order to make the the bridges. One of the next dungeons also promises to be a challenge, as it will include a complex maze.

4. 3 new characters will join the story, two of which are girls (for those people who were complaining about the game being a "sausage fest").

5. The soundtrack will be revamped, music will better suit the maps and the mood.

6. New enemy battlers graphics, courtesy of Dark Gaia.

7. Skills will be added in, there were only two in this demo, unfortunatley.
Dark Gaia

Thanks. I'm pretty sure we're the only two people using them too.

And ugh... School. Don't remind me. Year 11 will be tough.
BlackMask
Wow great job you took in all that criticism and you going to fix you game accordingly great job thumbsup.gif

Sound like your flaming me when you Quoted me edit that part and I'll edit this
Canuck
Looks pretty nice, although the mapping's a little iffy, IMO. My standards are incredibly high, though >_>

Try to make the forest maps' tree arrangements less square.
Dark Gaia
Yes, however with how the tileset he is using is designed, if the trees are not arranged in that manner it would look very odd, so that's probably the best option to leave them as is.
l33tpie 6
Hey there everyone! Project of the Month Feburary nominations are open now *wink wink*. If you like my game, show your support now!
Dark Gaia
Moved into the Team Gaia forum for Team Gaia projects. Please be sure to update this at least once a month.
l33tpie 6
Once a month sounds like a deadline I can meet. Good to see the forum is visible.
Dark Gaia
Yes, well just so you know... You are to leave the moderating of this forum to me, but you are free to start whatever topics you wish such as concept art or walkthoughs.
l33tpie 6
Minor Update!

-Added in a character bio for one of the new actors in the next demo. I'll post some screenshots of the new demo tomorrow too.
Dark Gaia
Ooo... I will look forward to them!
l33tpie 6
Here are the new screenshots, there's only two because I have spent most of my time developing the database further.

The new enemy battlers, provided by Dark Gaia!

Screeny of the new town, Port Elru!

Liar! I have been reading as well, just nothing big to comment on =(. Well, just letting ya know there are some out there that are interested in your project (and not just one o.o). Well, the screenies are looking good, and gl with the project =). Also, don't hesitate to call upon me if you need some testing done.

Edit: Forgot to comment on the battlers, looking good!
