It's awesome (as usual)! =D
(Yumme seems to be missing the indentation for her navel, just thought I'd mention that considering that the outfit appears to be tight enough to show it.)
Another great piece, I've been waiting to see the full version of the Yumme you've got in your avatar and now there it is; fantastic work! ^^

Started working on the main characters (Sorhun) redesign, say goodbye to the teal spiky hair:
(Actually considering a name change for him aswel)

Yeah basic lines... red and blue... early work in progress.

Superb!
I think you are qualified to add any sort of brilliance to your art when you can create comedy like that. =P

It makes a real statement.
Seriously though, Holder, your art is pretty good.

Your characters look really unique.

Okay my DL topic was going a bit off topic. So some modern animated battlers by adapting the gud'old 2k3 characters:
Started with this one:

Tweaking and altering quite a bit because on second glance it looked too smooth and not battler-like.

Preferred one?
I'm not using any template for these I just got my tablet and went mad

Okay preference for the colours of the first and pose of the second:

Okay bumping this with an animation of the first four frames of the idle pose for crits

From the IRC they liked the colours from the first one and the pose-shape of the second, hence me making a third in the middle which is a mixture of those things.
Gave her a sword and shield since that's the usual set-up for a Heroine in 2k3:

Thoughts?

I have to say that I agree with Nicsp, lol.
Where some may be of the opinion that it is great to have the "bouncy" (as Nicsp calls it) going on, I think that it is a little more than it should be, or would be.
Maybe more subtle?

I also think that she is moving a bit too quickly. Perhaps make her movement less jittery and let it transition softly. She looks as if she just had 15 cups of coffee. (If that makes any sense.) =]
The hair (behind the character) stays in place but has a wind effect, where it appears as if it should be moving with the body.
One last thing: her belt seems to be loose, and it bounces as well, but I'm thinking that a belt would be tighter than that. If it were a sash or something, it would have some movement but not around the waist area as a sash would only have movement where it is not tied across the body.
Otherwise, I love it. =D
(You asked for my thoughts, lol.)

Boobs can be bouncy >< Nothin' wrong with that

Speed can be controlled via the configuration within the animated battler script, this was just the speed I set it to for the .gif
This characters hair is as it shows in the 2k3 screenshot, it sticks out in a sort of upside-down fan shape, so the movement is a frame after the head moves, so it's not like card.
I'm still thinking on the belt, as it was loose fitting at the bottom I thought above movement within a battle and figured that having a skin tight belt would reduce movement and ease of combat.
Can't remember if I showed the battle in 2k3:

Hope that clears some of the issues up.

thanks guys, yeah I didn't really have a plan and originally did someone sitting on like a big leaf pillow.
Not sure what to do for a costume though, I'm not that big on designing outfits
leongon
Nov 5 2010, 09:10 AM
You do not need to design clothes, just browse for some fashion sites on internet and pick what you like. But of course it feels better if you can design the outfit... I did for my pandaren °o°

Of course, just as a suggestion, Hirei is pretty good with costumes. I'm sure you could ask her for an idea.
I love admiring costumes, but designing them or creating ideas for them... not so good at that myself. XD

Superb! The shading and structure of the face and skin is very well done!

(And I know what you mean, sometimes I find myself randomly abandoning projects in order to start new ones. I always go back and finish them though, if possible. ^^)
Holder
Nov 17 2010, 03:39 PM
I was a bit unsure about the shading to be honest, thought it got a bit too yellow at times
The face was meant to be like a dream like expression, sort of unsure and unaware. Hope that comes across
leongon
Nov 17 2010, 04:25 PM
Eyes wide open and serious expression, with face and eyes directly straight to me. Is really menacing... I see she's being very aware of what I'm doing, I can imagine her with a hand near her handgun in case I do something suspicious.
At least that's what I see, with extreme honesty.
X-M-O
Nov 17 2010, 09:26 PM
I see her in a dream-like state, but it would appear more that way if she were looking more downward, methinks. =]
The yellow came across quite well, it gives the appearance of sunlight at dusk. =]

After looking at your work in the beginning of the thread and seeing the newest picture, it's very impressive how much you've improved!
You posted it back in November so I doubt you're looking for criticism at the moment but I can't help but notice the knees on your newest piece. With the highlights and the lines on the top of the knee, they seem rather over-defined, almost as if they're jutting out strangely. (Which looks particularly odd on the left leg because you can see they are shaped as a normal knee.) The highlights on the hair seem rather strangely-placed.
The shadow monster-type sprite is nice! The girl sprite is too but she seems to have some contrast problems. The yellow part of her dress is very high-contrast, and other parts such as the hat and white part of the dress have very same-y shades where it's difficult to tell them apart.
Holder
Mar 9 2011, 03:41 PM
Cheers for the points there merrill, they'll certainly be taken on board. I alter styles quite a bit so I assume that's probably where I get these bad habits from on certain body parts.
Handling white on sprites is quite hard I've found, making it less grey and more bright pale cyan helped a bit but yeah you're right they're still too close.
The Creeps (Shadow monster) is now finished and I've moved onto my next one, but I'm not wanting to just release it as a single especially with the config alterations so I'm waiting till I have a few for a starter set.
Can't think of a name for these though, Advanced Animated Battlers was one name I came back to but I dunno

Been really ill recently so this has been mostly tweaks and small things since I first started on it a week ago. Creeps is there for size reference.
bacon
Mar 16 2011, 04:45 PM
The legs may be too lanky and out of perspective and proportion. I would try to tweak them a little more because they look kind of awkward. They bend maybe a little too high up as well. I definitely see what you are trying to do but her pose looks more like an awkward squat.
I know you are comparing the two sprites and stuff like that but i dont think the style of those two really match eachother very well. You might want to add some more detailing to the black ghost because when compared to the person, it just doesn't really go well together but this is just my opinion.
The hat may be a little poofy too it almost looks like its floating a little bit.
Definitely work on your poses and stuff more i know this maybe be silly but what i do is i actually draw pizel sized people and do crazy poses and stuff like that so i would try that out at least. You are getting better with color maybe just a little more contrast in the clothing but you have improved very nicely with color for sure.
Other than that keep working on your stuff you are always improving~

Thanks for the informative reply once again bacon
I guess I started with Creeps because it was a basic creature to do and all I had to focus on was animation, the base does go into a transparent shadow in the actual battler sheet.
Practice on my poses is really needed I can't agree with you more, I've tried sketching stick or non detailed limbs but I just end up not being able to define angles enough (depth rather than angles really).
This is the character reference I'm using:

Going to see if I can work on the legs and that hat.

hey it looks simply fantastic Holder, the gun is very cool as well. It holds a futuristic yet classic feel about it at the same time. the character design is sweet too but the ear did look a bit odd because it lookd somewhat like a lump lol or perhaps thats an alien feature.
Also about the attack pose... her arms seem sorta relaxed. although that depends on if the gun has a anti-recoil feature

good spriting as always

Here's my mesh almost finished:

The foot was a pain in the arse to get done, I don't think it's brilliant but at least it's there. Also I'm actually happy I've only used one triangle so far, and that's for the knee.
I hope to be able to get a nice pixel texture onto it aswel, but I'm not sure how that's going to turn out.

Testing out a technique here, basically you should be able to notice what pose the character is in and who it is (if already know previously) when the drawing is done in a silhouette:

I'll finish this up someday aswel because this will be one of the profile images for the topic and what not.
