wow... Looks like a scary game, but I don't really like these kind of games hence being scarred for life at age 10 X(
I have one question.... does this game have any popups, like scary screamers or anything? If it doesn't, I would be glad to play, but otherwise I'll refer this to Bloo since he got over this type of stuff and I haven't yet... If it doesn't, I might just save this for a rainy friday where me and Bloo are having and overnighter.
Looks pretty sweet though. I assume it wouldn't be as scary since its in VX, but it may as well be. Good luck with the production and everything!

Well, a lot of people have thought this game wouldn't be scary since it's a VX game, but surprisingly, they always PM me later telling me just how freaked out they got.
Redd, this game DOES use pop up elements sparingly, at 2 or 3 points in the game. Most of the scare value comes from the atmosphere of the game however.

This looks great. The trailer... Man, that thing sent chills down my spine! I just downloaded the game and will play it right away.

Hell, M.A I will continue to make games of this quality even after I am in the grave! I will be the first zombie game developer.
Seriously, I hope you enjoy it. This is by far my scariest, and most well recieved game yet.

I have to say i was skeptical at first........ But this game is really good. It's all about the ambience. I found myself freaking out at every noise that would pop up, the music ambience is mint! I have to say : this is by far the best attempt at an rpgmaker horror game i've experienced yet!!!! I'm gona be looking forward to the sequel!!!!

I wanted to ask..
The music is pretty chilling and I'm a fan of silent hill music and was wondering if you were releasing a OST?
Dark Gaia
Mar 17 2009, 10:15 PM
One is in the works my friend. I'm currently making a sequel which uses remixes of One Night's custom themes, once that is out, I will release a full OST of both games. In the meantime, look up One Night on
www.gamejolt.com and there's some of the tracks posted there.

You said that their are alternates..
Are they bad or good endings in the sense(Bad you know the main gets nerfed or something)

I will download it play it then come back and give you a proper review
and like in the other comments that must be been hard to make a freaky game on Vx

Mar 21 2009, 07:47 PM
Actually, it's not so hard if like me you know how to scare people. I've played enough horror games to know how they work and after all, psychological horror depends less on actual graphics, more on the atmosphere. I'll look out for that review! Good or bad, send it my way.
@Heart Of Shadows: There are 4 or so endings, each one dependant on who is alive at the end. Here they are, they are generally the same but with subtle differences.
Good + (Marchani and Tiffany alive)
The hero and Tiffany joke about how close they came to dying, but are ultimately glad to have survived. The hero doesn't know if his memory is waiting for him back home, but as long as he has Tiffany, he will be okay. Marchani reveals that he was brought back from the brink of death by a quantum fluctation in the merge. He has been given a second lease on life, and vows now to spend the rest of his days redeeming himself for what he did.
Good (Tiffany alive)
The hero and Tiffany joke about how close they came to dying, but are ultimately glad to have survived. The hero doesn't know if his memory is waiting for him back home, but as long as he has Tiffany, he will be okay. The two silently remember Marchani, who redeemed himself at last by helping them escape.
Bad + (Marchani alive)
Marchani reveals that he was brought back from the brink of death by a quantum fluctation in the merge. He has been given a second lease on life, and vows now to spend the rest of his days redeeming himself for what he did. Meanwhile, the hero blames himself for Tiffany's death, and declares that he cannot go on since he took her chance to survive away from her.
Bad (Only the hero lives)
The hero blames himself for Tiffany's death, and declares that he cannot go on since he took her chance to survive away from her. He believes that Marchani too died in vain, as he sacrificed himself to give the hero and Tiffany a chance to escape, but Tiffany did not make it. The hero believes he is unworthy of being the lone survivor. He wonders how he will be able to go on.

really? that works!

so you have to avoid these monsters or you take damage right?
like if one just waltz up to you and touches you, then you lose life right?
if so, how does this work?
and how can i get it?

Apr 2 2009, 05:42 PM
Very complex scripting my friend. Actually, I can't honestly say. As to how you can get it, not from Dark Gaia. He is very protective of his work and his resources. I can't even get it from him. Maybe if you make a script request in the appropriate forum, someone may be able to whip something up for you though.
Happy hunting.

Apr 2 2009, 10:47 PM
Yes, unfortunately the scriptwork used in One Night is custom made and very secretive. I have upgraded it now to allow Resident Evil/Silent Hill type gunfighting and melee combat for the sequel, but I'm not willing to release it yet. I will eventually though!
As for the combat system in the first One Night, it basically works how you said, an enemy touches you, and you lose health, unless you hold a defensive weapon like a Stun Gun, in which case the character automatically fends off the foe.

You won't be waiting long. I'm hoping to get the follow up out very soon. You'll enjoy it lots I hope, while it cuts down on the enemies, it adds tons more fear into the picture.
I've actually made a lot of changews to the sequel, so what you have read about it thus far is now false information. I did a massive run down of the new sequel on my Link Removed in the One Night topic, so you can read up on it there.
Don't advertise, dude. Sorry but I'll have to warn you for that.

Can we have the massive update in the Featured Projects please, rather than a link to a website (which has been removed under the direct advertising guidelines).
We insist on the same in the main forum so would not expect any the less in the featured games..

I've been playing your game Dark Gaia (Just about to leave the Underground) and here's what I think so far.
The Good-This game is actually a real horror game, it freaked me out so much. I commend you for being able to portray the horror part of your game so well.
-Your plot is beautiful, I love how there is alot of suspense in the begining of the game with the character not knowing who he is and what he's doing.
-I like how you have to investigate items in order to solve problems, it makes you have to use your brain.
The Bad-Sorry, but I hate the fact that you only have three lives, and the fact that you don't have a HUD that tells how many lives you have left. I mean, sometimes throughout the game, I found myself forgetting how many lives I had left. Maybe in your sequel, you can try using a bar of health that decreases when you get hit.
-There are definetly not enough stun guns/ knives/ first aid kits. That made it even harder to survive with so many monsters cornering you nad beating the crap out of you.
-The worst part of them all is the fact that the only way to hurt your enemies is by using defensive items. I mean, if the main character is an agent, wouldn't he carry a gun, so that when you press a button, you shoot?
-There were some grammatical errors.
-When Tiffany enters your party, you can walk on her and she can go under doors.
-The save rooms are annoying, why can't you just save wherever you want?
Question: After you put in the three power conduits into that machine and then turn on the power, that crazy axe murderer thing is waiting outside. So when you are about to leave, Tiffinay tells you to run but I don't see how to dodge that thing without getting hit at least one time. The problem is that I only have one life left. Do you know how to get around this?
All in all, it's a pretty good game that I'd give a 7/10. Great job Dark Gaia!
(BTW, I'm not done with the game, so my rating might go up.

Update:
One of my testers discovered a discrepancy where a door event later on in the game is set to "Below Here", preventing game progress. Thus, I have released a new version with this bug fixed, and containing all the missing files to boot!
To those already playing old version:
You will not be able to continue once you encounter the shoddy eventing. Just download the new version and cut/paste your save file (savegame.rxdata) into the new directory to continue.
Where can one download the newest version? Thanks.

Wait, Dark Gaia, did you read my post?
Dark Gaia
Jun 11 2009, 07:08 PM
Well, what do you know, I actually didn't! Well, I read it now, and I have a response:
I was glad to hear what you felt was good. All of those things were spot on, those were what I was aiming for. I noticed most of the things you listed as Bad were combat/monster related, and I'm glad to say that I didn't really feel good in the end about those things myself which is why in the sequel One Night: The Beyond (which if you didn't know is already fully complete and released in this very Team Gaia forum) those problems are all fixed. Your save room comment... Well, the reason the save rooms are there is because in survival horror games it is a normal game mechanic to force the player to save only in predetermined spots, it increases the tension. I'm not gonna change that.
Now, about your little problem with Faceless... It IS possible to get around him, I have done it before and have watched one of my testers do it. The trick is to not immediately run for the door but to try and lure him further into the room and then get around him.
Thanks for the review, and do try the sequel!
The Law G14
Jun 12 2009, 04:47 AM
Yeah, the save rooms do actually add to horror theme and I'll try again with that axe thing. And I 'll be sure to play One Night: The Beyond.
Dark Gaia
Jun 12 2009, 05:08 PM
Thanks for understanding about that. I feel that the save rooms add to it a lot. The game suddenly becomes a lot scarier when the player realizes that they are hunted by monsters and the next save room is ages away. They aren't safe, it's up to pure survival to get them through. When a save room is finally found, the player usually feels a massive surge of relief.

Love the game dude!
I do have the suggestion of updating the game with the improvements in the squeal. Don't have to, But It would be nice.
10/10 for me.
Why? Only having so much equipment is realistic. And the monsters threat of trapping you is always on my mind.

Update/News
I've released two patches for One Night and One Night 3.
The patch for One Night adds some additional content to the game and implements some features from the two later games into the engine, and the One Night 3 patch fixes some passability errors, redoes some scares in the forest area, and removes Hexagon's sprite from the hospital area.
Both of them are highly reccomended downloads. You can access them both from the download links posted in the game threads.

It's been a very long time since I've updated One Night. You'll remember that a few months ago, I mentioned putting the game through an overhaul to improve the writing and gameplay flaws addressed in Shinan and Max McGee's reviews.
This overhaul is now completed. The game has less enemies, better atmosphere, more streamlined puzzles and exploration, and a completely rewritten script.
Finally, I'm happy with the state One Night is in. If you've never solved the mysery of One Night before, this is a perfect time to introduce yourself to the game.
This is a "lo-fi" version of our main content. To view the full version with more information, formatting and images, please
