Dark Gaia

OverviewOne Night is a survival horror game created by Dark Gaia with
RPG Maker VX. It was first released on January 2nd, 2009, and since then has garnered favorable reviews and has spawned two full sequels. It also holds the very dubious honor of being the
first ever survival horror game developed with
RPG Maker VX.
StoryThe Complex... At one point, it was obviously some sort of bustling, busy epicentre of human activity, the nerve center of all sorts of scientific endevours and the military stronghold of an entire armed force. This can be evidenced by the sheer complexity of the place...
Buildings sprawling over each other, subterranian levels, airfields, hangars, vast underground laboratories...
But then again, if it ever was those things, it surely isn't now.
Something happened there long ago, and now The Complex is abandoned, crumbling, and eerily silent, it's inhabitants seemingly vanished into nothing in the blink of an eye.
It seems like The Complex is just... no longer there. It's never been heard from since that day when... whatever went wrong went wrong, and nobody who has set out looking for it has ever returned. No maps seem to mark it's location anymore, and not even GPS surveilance can sight anything in the endless expanse of forest it once called its home.
Some have even gone so far as saying the place doesn't exist.
There's some sort of secret behind that place... And what happened there. The Complex holds many such surprises, and a treasure trove of mysteries too. But it also holds a strangling atmosphere of terror, and a horrific fate which has changed it into a world of dread and danger.
You have just opened your eyes from a long period of unconsciousness, finding yourself sprawled on the cracked stone floor of one of The Complex's many abandoned rooms. Remembering only your name, you must now set out into the darkness that has infested this place, and discover who you are, why you are there, and what terrible catastrophy turned the once bustling Complex into what you are about to experience.
Game Features
- Scary atmosphere and locations, with eerie audio and dark lighting effects to set a frightening mood.
- Relentless enemies which will hunt you endlessly, and which you cannot defeat!
- Mysterious story filled with puzzles and secrets to discover.Screenshots

This game looks very nice Dark Gaia. I can't wait to test as it looks like it will be a good change from the same old game genres I play. The screenshots look quite good, the maps really give the atmosphere of a horror game. Hopefully it won't creep me out too much.

Whoops! I've designed it to freak out even the most hardened player, so looks like you'll be in for a rough ride. I'll PM you to test it as it comes closer to release, as such a short game won't take long to make.

Thanks for the feedback. Now that I know the project will actually be played by people, I can go full speed ahead.

This game will rock! One thing I liked is how when you described the scenario at the beginning I began to think about Limansk in Stalker: Clear Sky, wich seems to have kinda the same atmosphere (except for stalker is in full 3D) Hope you get it out faster than in february, cause I almost began drooling when reading this (!)

Being a member of Team Gaia, I hope I'm not overstepping my boundaries but, I would like to inform everybody that this game has been nominated for Project of The Month January, alongside another of Dark Gaia's projects
Legionwood.

Thanks l33tpie. Team Gaia is involved in the creation in this game, so you could say it's their game too! Thus, you are entitled to promote it as you see fit.
@Endar: If I get a particularly involved session of RMing, I may be able to bring it out in January.

hey now, dont leave your lead tester out of all the fun! Heh but seriously, I dont mind helping ya with this as well. I feel like I should be doing more anyways. The horror story you have looks good. Your games are going to end up putting people out of a job! Heh, but you have been doing a good job, and I refuse to be left out =). You have some nice features, and I bet the monsters you set wont be easy to get past. Fair warning: I don't scare easy!

Ah, you've done more since you showed me the other week. The monster feature will be nice. But me, also being a Team member, will continue to provide my input, starting now.
If you haven't already have that first jump (you know, the one that I changed earlier) to a parallel process to activate while they are two or one away from it. I'll be waiting for it to be finished. Once I play it, I will have even more inspiration for 'Thirt33nth Hour'. You know where to find me if you need me.

Don't think that Legionwood is halted in any way because of this though. Both projects are full speed ahead. I'm more excited about this one at the moment though, as there is truly no other VX game like it. It's going to define a genre of it's own. (It's even very different to the VX game The Ravenwood Horror.)
As I post this, I am uploading an official trailer movie. I will double post back when it has finished uploading.

Dec 19 2008, 04:03 AM
Guys, here's that double post! The video is now up (though it's not great, it DOES convey the atmosphere the game will have) plus I've added descriptions of One Night's monsters and added an extra line to the story.

Awesome trailer, it provides a good insight into your game. It creeped me out for the most part so I don't know how I'll cope with the game.

However, the game does look excellent and you've managed to make it look quite scary. Can't wait for it.

This just gets better and better. The trailer looked real proffesional ('cept for the copyrights line, wich was almost unreadable

) and got me hyped, and crazily enough it made me want to make a game with nightvision available (I know how to do it, but I've always been too lazy to geit it done

) Lookin' more forward to the game now more than ever, and sorry for using ( ) so much

(forgotten what's the english name for it)
EDIT: I've been trying to download the .png files at the first post, but everytime I try I get redirected to the board message that tells me I'm not allowed to use the download feature because I'm not logged on. What the heck is happening?

I tried doing so, but my bandwidth for the month is used up now so I can't upload to file sharing stuff until Jan the 2nd.

Sorry Canuck, but my email only allows a max of 2MB attachments. The movie is 7MB. Just go along without it for now. I'll have it all sorted out after Christmas in time for the game's release.

Hey guys, just me again to say I have just made the choice to include Multiple Endings. I'm not revealing how many endings there will be, but I will reveal that the choices you make throughout the game will determine which ending you get and each will have it's own consequence.
Canuck
Dec 20 2008, 08:41 PM
That's a very cool idea, and fitting of the survival-horror genre. Just how exactly does one go about doing that in RPG Maker? It seems like a lot of work to make entire sections of a game that may not even be played.
Dark Gaia
Dec 20 2008, 08:44 PM
Well, it's all down to a LOT of switchwork. And all the areas of the game will still be played, the game will still play out in the same way, but you will be presented with choices along the way, such as which areas you visit first, or which characters you help in certain situations, or how you defeat certain bosses, or even just picking up a special ending changing item along the way which will effect what happens in the ending, you'll be able to change the ending, but not how the game plays out.
Endar
Dec 21 2008, 02:27 AM
Ending-changing items? Like the rubber ducky of doom

Btw, you said "how you defeat bosses", does that mean you can defeat a boss in several ways!? And how is the combat executed?
l33tpie 6
Dec 21 2008, 02:55 AM
I think Dark Gaia may be using an on map battle system like the crisseagram ABS script. Also the multiple endings thing sounds pretty neat. The little rubber ducky of doom gets you the best ending, lol
EDIT: Dark Gaia, I just checked on hotmail (I live in Australia too, btw) and there's a 10mb limit per email. Unless you were talking about your internet provider.

Hey Gaia,
Ya're doing an awsome job, keep up the good work.
It looks it's going to be a dark game, awsome!! I like contrast

haha
One question I have:
What is "Real Time Lighting and Shadows-script" and where can I check it out what it does?
Greatzz,

This looks excellent, the screenshots have a real atmosphere to them and use the VX tilesets really well.
Can't wait to try it out. There is nothing better than a creepy horror game.
From one of the "Lurking Under Life" testers!
Dark Gaia
Dec 22 2008, 08:42 PM
Thanks to you all for the attention (especially Kaz, you won't be disapointed)
The combat in this game is executed on the map, but there isn't any direct combat at all. When you face a boss, you will have the chance to either run off or to trap it somewhere or crush it with a loose but of debris etc etc.
And I can't reveal the "Real time lighting" script yet. It's a secret of mine for now so you must wait until release.

Gaia, after reading the details, I will be glad to share my talents with the game. I never seen a horror genre in any RPG Maker type of game. Although it seems like a typical horror-type game I do see some variety in it such as the self-defense and run concept, which does add a sense of fear and survival.

Possible sequel? Isen't that a little early to think about now? And one I have one question about the 'drop debris in the bosses head' method. How the heck do you animate it?
l33tpie 6
Dec 23 2008, 02:13 AM
I assume Dark Gaia has most of his game down on paper, but has ideas for a sequel and wants to use them, not let them go to waste. It's never too early for a sequel, I'm contemplating one now and my game isn't even past 10 minutes of playtime.
Dark Gaia
Dec 23 2008, 03:52 PM
Well, I said "possible sequel". I have mapped out the game on paper first, but of course, there's too much to fit into the one game. Seeing as how this game is getting some attention, I think it will do fairly well, so a sequel may be on the cards. I always make sure I have story details set out for a possible sequel to all my games. Top priority is finishing this game first.

DOUBLE POST (Important News)
Merry Christmas to all. The game is now 90% finished and I am setting the release day to New Year's Eve. Begin counting down!

...
For some reason, I feel like the game should have voice acting. Like at that screenshot of reading the paper/book in the dark.
Dark Gaia
Dec 27 2008, 07:20 PM
The original version did have voice acting, but as it was only my friends and I, it wasn't particularly Hollywood material, so after I scrapped the first version of the game (at 70% completion) and begun to develop this current version, I omitted the voices.
Perhaps if I do a sequel... Or a possible patch in the future... I'll see if others begin to make this request.

It's coming new year's Eve!? That's gonna be a scary new year's Eve, that's for sure. But again I have to ask (sorry for asking again) how do you animate the falling debris?
EDIT: Do you by any chance need a beta tester?

Dark Gaia, do you think you can upload those monster png's to mediafire or some other uploading site?
Dark Gaia
Dec 29 2008, 04:15 AM
I will do it when I release the game. The falling debris is events that move around. However, I chose to remove that boss fight from the game for certain reasons. While I say this is due on New Year's Eve, I have recently run into a couple scripting problems, so there is now a slight chance it may be later. I've had to remove a few areas and scenarios to solve this, and I've had to rush in the replacements, so overall the game will be slightly shorter now, but I'm still not sure I may finish it for the date I specified. Even if it is not out on NYE, it will definately be out on Jan 2nd at the latest, so don't fear.
Fingers crossed, but keep looking forward to it nonetheless!

I live in GMT +1:00 (Oslo), so I won't get it on new years eve anyways
But you really don't rush it that much, after all there needs to be some qualty in the game
Dark Gaia
Dec 30 2008, 05:48 AM
Oh, the game will still be very good in my opinion, it will now just be a bit different than I originally intended, for example, in the first versions, you as a player would explore The Complex in it's entirety. The current version only allows you to explore three areas of it before the story takes you to another location. The changes I've had to make are just simple ones to the basic story and mapping design, the gameplay remains entirely untouched.

Yes I do, but now I bring a bout of bad news!
Due to an unfortunate problem with my internet, I'm not going to be active for about a week or so, so unfortunately this means the game's release is pushed back by about a week as well. Sorry in advance for any disappointment! I promise I will get the game online as soon as I can come back!

To contrast that bad news, here's some good news I'll hand out before I leave. One Night has taken out Project Of The Month Silver! Thanks to all who show their support, and don't worry, I'll make sure you have the game you voted for within the next 12 days.
