Dark Gaia
Update

Legionwood just hit 85% completion! I've just finished adding the final touches to the last town in the game (Makir) which has the final equipment and Tech stores. Now there are just three dungeons to be done along with the ending until the game is finished! Hold your breath!
oldmangreg
Few things:
1. As other people have said, the accuracy and agility does need to be improved.

2. In the first town, the stall where you get the beast book seems to allow NPCs to pass through.

3. The cave with the bats, are you suppose to go there later?

That's all for now. Haven't got to far in the game yet.

They were the very first things I adjusted. People who play the next release from the start will find them much better.

Yes... And the player too! I'll have to fix that.

3. The cave with the bats, are you suppose to go there later?

Well, I was intending to make it part of a side quest but I never did so in the next version the door is gone and there are only chests in there.

Any well know level tips in the Canal, lol, I know, I was at hbgames, and asking the same question. laugh.gif rolleyes.gif

Top characters both lv 5, Ark is 7, guard is 4. I've been trying to get them all to get heal spell as much as possible.

I know it's difficult to level up, when the monsters are beating you down even easy, that's okay though.
oldmangreg
I was like level 15 with all my characters when I finished the canal. Extra prep.

1. The only problem I have right now is the fact that you have to choose to heal at a save crystal. Shouldn't it heal you automatically?

2. And when I used Study Enemies, it keeps doing at the beginning of every battle. I don't mind that, but it should probably be fix.

3. And when you are in the ruins where you have to get three crystals to go save the miners, the one where you have to guess the number, shouldn't there be at least a clue?
Dark Gaia
The idea is that you're meant to play higher/lower there. I may put a clue in the next release. The choice to heal at the Save Crystals is actually a reference to Legion Saga, if you've played that, but yes it makes more sense for it to heal you automatically.
Hmm... Study Enemies should not be broken. It's never done that before in any previous version. I'll check it out. Can you describe exactly what happens?

Also guys I know that Chapter One is quite hard at the moment; in the final version this is addressed and it will be a lot easier.

I was in the ruins where if you study the enemies, it won't work because you have to defeat them first. It's after your ship is destroyed and you learned what happen to Lann and Liara's parents and you end up on that island
Dark Gaia
Ahh... I see. I'll investigate that... I see, the switch toggle is missing. Thanks very much!

No problem. It's not like I complain about it happening, but it needs to be fixed. smile.gif
Dark Gaia
Yeah well, I like the game to be as polished as it can be and it doing that is not polished at all.
Dorohero
Hi, how do i get across border desert?

Yea. Your game is hard enough without access to cheat codes. Just kidding. I love the level of strategy needed. I'm still currently at the ruins with the glitched Study Enemies, trying to get enough levels to stand a chance against the undead dragon. I'm currently level 13 with all my characters. I like how must of the items are high priced, forcing you to battle more to get enough money, because that's what I found annoying about the Final Fantasy's, how you get a lot of money and don't need to spend long getting your best equipment.

BTW who made your monster graphics?

Glitch/mistake/etc I found: The door before the undead dragon boss in the ruins, check the priority of the event. It seems some of the characters have parts of their heads go under it when you walk past it.
Infitiae
So I heard someone else has experienced this as well...

I have no random encounters anymore, I noticed it when climbing the mages tower to get the Gargoyle summon. It carries forward into every zone basically...

I played again from the beginning, and the exact moment I notice it happening is somewhere between getting on the boat from Charn Castle area, sailing to the winter merchant, buying 6 Ice swords, 6 fire swords, 3 Hypno wires, and all the spells.

and sailing back to the caves where you fight the ogre in the beginning.

I don't know if you have resolved this issue already, or if this will help you, but hopefully it does!

P.S. I love the game, I'm waiting for the next chapters!
Seirno
Yeah, I was the first to report it back when I noticed it. It happens whenever you go into the Arcanist's Tower. It'll be fixed in the next version Gaia said so we'll be able to go back and fill in the Bestiary for other things, though I still have a save point from before I entered there so I may pick it up from that point, just to experience how it should have been.
oldmangreg
The glitch is way before. It was after you get the beast book and end up crashing onto the island with the dragon guarding the Sword of Gaia.
Infitiae
Yeah I didn't even go into the arcanist's tower and I have no encounters is what I'm saying, it's somewhere else, or it's in multiple places. , but it happens right when I go to the winter island merchant for me.
Dark Gaia
Yeah, I tracked down that it was somewhere near the end of Chapter 3 that causes it. Unfortunately, you have to deal with it for now. In the final release, those empty areas will have the encounter rates restored.
Rhen84
great game! I love that its not too easy, but at the same time I don't have to spend centuries on leveling up so I'm strong enough to move on with the story, I've always liked a bit of a challenge. Although I would like to have a save spot that didn't include having to stay at the inn, but other than that I really can't think of anything wrong with it =) Great work!
Dark Gaia
There are save points in the mid points of most dungeons that allow you to save and heal for free. Thanks for playing and I hope you stick with it and wait for the full version!
Dorohero
Hi, i wonder where should i go after i beat that werewolf (and obtain Fenryr summon) since i cant get across border dessert. I would be greatefull if someone could help me. Btw i like this game so far endlooking forward to see more.

In the desert just keep following the pile of bones, if it's closest to the east exit go east, closest to the north go north. After about 5 screens you get into the real part of the desert.
Dark Gaia
Thanks for answering that question for me Infitiae. That is indeed how one passes the border desert.
Rhen84
Just finished chapter 3 and can't wait for the rest. It's not often you find an rpg with a great storyline like this one, it must've taken you a long time. Have to say it again, the work you put into legionwood really shows. Not sure if its too early to ask this lol, but do you have any idea yet as to when you might be releasing the rest of the chapters? =)
Dark Gaia
They are almost done and I'd expect them if not at the end of June certainly in July. I plan to try hard and finish them this week.
Fanatik007
some error when I open game to play it says Error Graphics character Verculio didn't found.
Dark Gaia
Somewhere in this thread (look in the last two or three pages) I've posted that missing file. For the final release I'll consider uploading to multiple mirrors to avoid this problem that seems to stem from RMN.

Update On Progress

I've just begun work on the game's final dungeon! Once this is done, I'm gonna test play the game from start to finish before I choose to release it, so henceforth I'm setting a release deadline for two weeks from now. Get ready for the final chapter, Legionwood players!
dezz123
HOLY CRAP.
Can't wait, Dark Gaia.
RPGmakerperson
Dark Gaia you have created a VERY high quality game with a very interesting story. The story slightly reminds me of an anime called Shinzo with the great war and strange phenomena.
Dark Gaia
Thanks! The story was actually fleshed out as a Dungeons and Dragons campaign before I began work on the game.
Infitiae
Two weeks! I am excite!

Haha, I've been waiting only a couple months now, can't imagine the people who've been in the loop for the last year or more...
Decedent
Well I just finished playing 3.21. 14 hours later and I thoroughly enjoyed it! It was the first game I've seen here that piqued my curiosity enough to play, and to be honest there were moments that turned me off.

1. Dialogue was peculiar. I can't remember of the top of my head some of the examples, but you used a lot of uncommon words here and there, sometimes it read like a college/uni english student writing, others very corny and childish.

2.Battles deterred me at first, untill I realised that was part of the charm. As you said, it's definetly not a button mashing game, and it kept me focused the entire time instead of zoning out.

I wasn't sure if I would play the whole thing, otherwise I would have tried to make a list of bugs or anything I found, some of which I remember have already been covered. I do wonder about some things. Key items with no use, like the 'Image Half' you get from the cottage and dungeon, Mythril Shard, Wyrmwood, Pin of Creation, Brazen Image and the old key to a house "somewhere".

Oh, one bug, when you first arrive in hawkshire, and the merchant offers to teach you duel weilding, it shows the option of teaching a character you have yet to obtain. Speaking of which, that was a rather overpowered move on your part. To me, off hand items didn't come close to the advantage you gain from holding two weapons.

Some items were conveniently labled as 2-hand, whilst others wern't, which made bying stuff a little difficult sometimes. One of the bows, (steel crossbow) says it is 2-handed, but it's not.

All in all, very fun, and looking forward to this last chapter biggrin.gif
Dark Gaia
Hi Decedent, thanks for playing and waiting for the next version. I'm glad you enjoyed it! I'll respond to your qualms now;

1. Yeah, I do tend to be a bit of a wordsmith but the dialogue inconsistencies come from the fact that some parts of the game were rewritten in later versions while earlier dialogue remains. Also, I tend to be more creative on certain days than others and sometimes just cannot write certain scenes as well as you would expect. I intend to go through the game before the final release and try to filter out the awkwardly/simply written scenes and bring them up to scratch. I try to strive to a rather high standard of writing.

2. I tried to make the battles somewhat strategic and challenging rather than button mashing fests. However, some new players are deterred by this so for the final release I've achieved a good balance of "button mashing" and strategic battles. Essentially, the start of the game is more akin to button mashing now and this slowly evens out.

3. All of those items funnily enough lead to side quests that can be solved in the final chapter, except for the Wyrmwood and the Mythril Shard which you can give to the mortician in Charn and the treasure hunter in Klaim respectively. These are traded for Pins Of Creation, which are the keys to unlock the superboss' dungeon in the final chapter.

4. Ah, so Zanthus is in the menu for the Dual Wielding? I'll have to fix that! And yeah, I understand that dual wielding is a bit overpowered but having only one character with that ability goes against the "specialise as you wish" motto of the game. As for the labelling of some items as "2 Hand" and others as not, chalk that up to me being forgetful. That's going to be filtered too.
Zeli
Awesome game! But the first boss is hard :S
(Legionwood - Tale of TwoSwords) But very nice game! I just love it!

ps. what tilesets you use?
Dark Gaia
The tilesets are a mixture of VX RTP and Mack's tiles. Glad you're enjoying it.
Infitiae
Almost ready? /impatientfoottapping

T_T

I'm all antsy to finish it up!

haha sorry, I'm just excited
Fleta
Allow me to continue in the line of praising. This is one of the best RPG games I've ever come across. I don't know if I missed the answer in the 25 pages of blurbs, but is it possible to beat the boss monster on the boat? Or is it possible for Lann's parents to beat Merces? Or do these just lead you to Chapter 2? I didn't get your response to my question about the sewers on Bluesophia because as soon as I heard you had responded, it blew up!!! Do you know what happened or if it will be restored?

Cheers,
Fleta
Dark Gaia
The Hydra can be defeated but Lann's parents are doomed to die. Defeating the Hydra simply gives you some experience. Blue Sophia has gone through a server reset as we had too many bot accounts. It should be restored very soon. Thanks for playing.

BIG Update (July 15th, 2010)

The final release of Legionwood is taking a bit longer than I previously thought, due to unforseen injections of schoolwork and the fact that currently I am not happy about how the earlier parts of the game compare to the new content; my latest playtest of the game has made me notice a lot of things that I want to fix. Thus, I'm taking the time now (even though the game is finished) to go back and rework the parts of the game I am currently unhappy with.

This is a major update on what I've done with Legionwood so far:

First of all, I addressed the start of the game and made a lot of the battles easier and more accessible. There are now more in depth tutorials on the AP system and how to use it effectively and enemies show a smoother difficulty curve; the easier parts of the late game have been altered to be harder while unusually hard parts of the game such as the Blackrock Cavern have been made easier. In my latest play test of the game, I passed Selatan Plains without much trouble at Level 2. Meanwhile, I cleared Blackrock Cavern only having one character KO'd at level 14. The problem with adjusting the balance of Legionwood however is that I cannot account for a player's AP setting; some settings will make the game easier, others harder.

Next on the agenda, the glitches. You'll be glad to know these have *all* been fixed, including the bug which made encounters turn off if you revisited Charn Castle in Chapter Three. I spent a lot of time reprogramming some areas and systems to fix these errors. I can't account for the yet to be released Chapter Four though; I have yet to playtest it.

Finally, the most glaringly obvious turn off about Legionwood is one that I am working very hard to fix; the writing. This problem comes from the game's long development time. I was a very different writer two years ago than I am now and I never went back to rewrite the old scenes. In my current playthrough I've been carefully examining each cutscene and scrutinising it by my current writing standards. Without sounding too arogant, I want to say that I think the writing in Chapter Four is excellent and the very best in the game. I'm currently rewriting the script and changing some key scenes such as Martyn's conversation in Hawkshire to seem more natural; it seems wierd that everyone simply accepted that Ark is an ancient god who created the universe so easily. A similar event occurs in Chapter Four for two other characters and I handled it a lot better, so the main reason the final version is taking so long to make is because I am rewriting nearly every scene - fixing spelling/grammatical errors, changing corny or badly written lines, removing instances of over exposition or repetition and adding more lines to certain scenes that are handled clumsily. This said though, Legionwood is not meant to be Shakespeare, it's meant to be a basic easily accessible, casual, cliched, bread and butter fantasy story - the writing's meant to be simple in some places and over the top in others.
Fleta
I don't really consider this a bug, but it certainly is surprising. My group is about level 18-20 range, but I've never been able to flee combat except if I surprise the group. What does it take to successfully flee? My people aren't hurting from experience, it just proves irritating and difficult to keep track of where I am when I have to have to fight against 3 hellhounds every 4 steps of a maze.

Fleta
Fleta
Tell me if this is intended for some reason, but I was at the ruins of the old castle (I still can't figure out how to get to Castoth's followers even after moving the rocks), but went back to the mainland to get resupplied. Even after resting at the inn, I still only have one third of the screen lit. It only happened after the screen darkened in the castle.
Fleta
Arrgghhh! I can't figure out how to get under the ruins. Also there's a chest that I can't get to. They're probably related, but any hints? When I move the rock to let me in, it gets stuck by the chest and I can't get to another side!!!
Fleta
Uberlord Gaia,

I have had no problem (systemwise) with Legionwood. Every other game that I download from this site won't install properly. It goes about fine, but when I go to run it says one of the RGSS (RGSS###@.dll where # is a number and @ is a letter) can't be found. How do you get around this? I can be reached at CompAid@rcn.com (United States). I've never had these problems before.
Dark Gaia
Have you installed the patch on the game's download site which fixes the blocked hallway in Demonhold Keep? It's on the main page for Legionwood under the logo.

Also, the inability to flee from battles is due to a problem with the game's Agility rate. This has been fixed for the final version, as has the screen not being fully lit. It's one of many bugs in the current version; you can also permanently turn off encounters if you enter Charn Castle. This will be fixed too.

Okay, your other problem... You see, Legionwood works because it contains the RPG Maker VX RTP files (the RGSS202E) but not all games on here contain that by standard. Google "RPG maker XP RTP" and "RPG Maker VX RTP" download them and install them and you will be able to play games that do not include the RTP.

Yup. That did it. Thanks. I now have lost Ark, Thyrra and Zanthus and Alexis, but regained Liara. I can't seem to find the ice cavern though. Is this in the next chapter? There's no real ending thing, so what's up?

That's cause it's not over yet... almost though...

The ice cave is in the farthest north areas you can reach by boat, it's pretty much only accesible from the... uhhh hmm... the first castle you visit, just boat around heading north whenever you can, you'll find it.

Are you talking about Gaia's Cavern near the Arcanist Tower? Because I can't do anything except get two doors that are shut tight there.

I love this game, Darkgaia, one of the best games out there and I know people may think I'm being a bit annoying, but is there a walkthrough to accompany it. I just love this game.
Infitiae
ummm not quite, it's kinda north east from there, you have to go by boat.
Broken Aesop
Game-breaking issue: Let's say you are in the prison and you just barely made it to the save point. You assume it's over and you'll be able to escape right after saving, a valid assumption, so you save. But then you get into a boss battle and whaddayaknow, you don't have enough time to fight. It's a good thing I kept multiple saves so I don't have to backtrack too much, but you might want to get rid of that save point or pause the timer during the boss or something. I'm not looking forward to trudging through Martyn's big spiel again either.

The writing is my only big complaint about this game. The story is interesting, but the stiff dialogue and the way it drags on takes away a lot from that. I'm glad you recognize these flaws and that you've learned from them. I hope you have also learned the proper usage of its. "Its" is possessive, and "it's" is a contraction for "it is." I cringe every time this mistake is made.
