Game Overview
Legionwood is a console style RPG made using RPG Maker VX. Legionwood is my attempt at creating a nostalgic and familiar RPG experience reminiscent of the classics of the early 90's such as Breath Of Fire and Chrono Trigger.
Legionwood features a massive world filled with adventures and side quests, and is expected to contain over 20 hours of gameplay and four huge story driven chapters.
While it isn't revolutionary and contains gameplay that is for the most part bog standard RPG fare, Legionwood is designed to be that way; familiar and fun for RPG fans looking for a casual game to play.

Storyline
The world of Legionwood. Once upon a time, it was prosperous and full of technological wonders. About three thousand years ago, a mysterious phenomena demolished most of mankind's cities, and as a species, they had to start again. This much, archaeologists and scholars know from the ancient ruins of technological cities and fortresses dotted throughout the most barren parts of Legionwood's surface.
After at least two millennia had passed, mankind had begun to re-establish itself as the planet's dominant species. Major inventions were being rediscovered, and technological development had finally reached a medieval period. It was at this time when everything began to go wrong. Legionwood has always had war, but suddenly, seemingly out of nowhere began a furious and unpredictable world war that raged for years and devastated cities and nations worldwide. This terrible conflict, known as the Great War, ended as suddenly as it began, with no mention of its cause or conclusion to the public, and mankind began to pick up the pieces.

Now, one thousand years have passed since the Great War came to an end. Since that terrible time, makeshift peace treaties have ensured there have been only minor conflicts over the last centuries, but once again technology is on the rise, and half truths and legends about the Great War and its origins are prevalent in popular culture.
Each country, empire and kingdom fears its neighbours, and only reluctantly are peace ties held in place. In a last ditched effort to try and maintain some sort of peace between the rival kingdoms of Charn and Trevelle, the king of Charn has decided to hold a celebration and
festival to honor his new daughter's birth. Everybody in attendance is expecting a good time, but a key figure linked to Legionwood's dark past of conflict and death has been biding his time, and has decided that now is the perfect time to stage a new Great War and political upheaval. Simply looking for a way to wind down after months of hard work, Lann and his sister Liara come to enjoy the festivities, but soon they will both be pulled unexpectedly into an epic saga which may just have a battle to decide the world's fate waiting in its wings.

Game Features
- A character driven story full of twists, turns and red herrings, and an intended gameplay time of around 20 hours.
- 6 playable characters, each one with a distinct personality, which you can mold into your own custom character classes to suit your combat style.
- Turn based combat with an emphasis on tough opponents and using skills, rather than mashing "attack" over and over. Think, don't button mash!
- A custom soundtrack, composed entirely of non comercial game music, some exclusive to Legionwood.
- Collect, raise and summon 5 elemental spirits to aid you in battle! Summon level up, learn skills and fight just like your party members!
- Innovative Ability Point system by KGC allows you to choose which bonuses you gain in level ups, so you're free to decide which role your characters fill in your battle plan.

Hi. I played your game up until I open the chest in Lann's room and then an error caused the game to close.
See if this happens to you to.

Anyway here is some feedback from what I saw so far.
This game is promising, pretty graphics and nice music combined with classic rpg feeling. Didn't get much of the storyline since I couldn't play long enough.
Things that bothered me:
-Too much vague story at the intro. I mean there is no need to have paragraphs of epic phrases, a dark age is coming, your name shall live eternally and such. We got this the first time said and we haven't connected to the hero just yet to really feel their meaning.
-The many pauses in every message were a bit tiring to me. Most dialogues need it for speaking effect but others don't.
Well that's all I got. I know I'm being nitpicky and probably what I said it's just a matter of taste.
I'm keeping an eye on this one.
Loirim
Script error after Lann takes the money in the chest, correct this.
Dark Gaia
Sorry guys, I overlooked a script event for a script that no longer existed. I'm reuploading now. I'll bump when it's done.

I've gotta leave soon, so in case I don't get time to put up the new link, try the download on www.rpgmaker.net. They should automatically add it tomorrow some time, called "Legionwood Demo 2 (fixed)" in the entry for Legionwood.

Or else, just please hold on till tomorrow. I'm really sorry about this! I overlooked such a minor thing that causes big trouble!
Dark Gaia
Okay, I've reuploaded to www.rpgmaker.net (see the top thread for link) but knowing them, they won't approve it for hours. Just hold on a bit longer and try to download it again sometime tomorrow. I'll add the MegaUpload link as soon as it's done, but for now you'll have to wait for rpgmaker.net. Sorry for the huge inconveniance!
darkhalo
Well, so far this is looking very promising. The presentation, storyline, graphics are very good infact.
Take your time btw with your demo, ppl can wait a while longer until its ready. With 38 scripts you have
alot there...so be patient. It feels solid by what Iv'e read so far, and youv'e managed to squeeze out the
best of the VX graphics. I'll play it and give you my feedback shortly. Sweet, I don't have to reinstall VX
again, as its a standie. Goodluck on this project, and keep at it. wink.gif
Dark Gaia
Well, guys, the fixed version is up! Check the brand new MegaUpload link (as I'm not sure if RMN's one will be up yet) and get version 2.0. Enjoy!

@DarkHalo: Thanks for your FONTLERO font BTW.
Ziosin
Your game looks awesome! I love the presentation post;

I can't download the demo because I'm not at home, so I'll download it later.

So until then, good luck!
lahandi

Wow 25 hours estimated total playtime. You must be put a great effort on this mate.

I'll try to download it this night biggrin.gif

wow very nice, You keep making good games ^__^!
demonlord5000
Sorry for the late reply lol. I will work on testing it now. I just now checked RRR tongue.gif. Looks like I have some catching up to do. Anyways, dling now and I will let ya know more soon. Mostly minor bugs so far, but being officially involved in testing, I will track down even the smallest things. The game looks good though. Good mapping, and it can really draw you in. I also like how you did the world map. It makes it look big.

1.When you first load the game, it shows the hero in the bottem left corner (new game). Tiny bug, but I will find every little thing.
2. An npc was able to walk on the party member behind me (not sure if me being in a conversation with an npc impacted that at all). Also when you finish the quest, the cat went through liara instead of the owner. Perhaps this was due to where she was standing/facing at the time, even if I had to give her the cat from the front.
3. Theres an npc thats moving around that seems like she shouldnt be. She mentions the town well, but when I talked to her shes not next to it. she wandered off a bit on her own.
4. When wolf defends (i think it was defending), an empty text box comes up. I think there are other empty text boxes in battle, such as when a character uses embrace.
5. On the seletan plains, there is a cat that you can walk through. It fixes itself after you accept the quest.
6. Not sure if theres a bug here or not, but in the inventory screen, I cant figure out how to switch it from all to something else. I tried a few things.
7. When I use double strike, it only hits once, but it does seem to do extra damage. Not sure if it was intentional, but thought I would post this since it says it hits twice.
8. Not sure if this was intentional, but in the first town the first skills you can buy are medium damage instead of low.
9. There is a mapping error in charn, inside the house in the bottem left. The mapping error regards the bed.
10. Inside the building where ark and the guard captain talk a bit, there are barred windows that you can walk on.

More coming soon, as I dont plan to let them elude me. Mayby I should change my name to buglord5000 tongue.gif. Taking a break for now, but great game so far. Just feeling a bit lazy. Dont want to make a new post yet, so I will edit this for now. With me on your side, those elusive bugs shall be found!

Well I guess the demo ends shortly after you beat the assassin =(. Fun game so far though. I took out efreet before the assassin lol. Good mapping and it seems fairly balanced. I am hoping for more challenging boss fights in the future. Anyways, I will be ready to test it when ya release more.
Dark Gaia

@Demonlord 5000:
1.Lazyness on my part. I'll fix it. Thanks.
2.That's due to the caterpillar script I used. You see, the oth party members AREN'T actually there, the script just makes it look like it, so they can get walked over. Unavoidable.
3. In VX, NPCs tend to wander off a lot, and I'm still getting used to it. I'm pretty sure I made her stationary, but alas no. I'll fix it, thanks.
4. That's because I'm using an old, not completely translated version of Tankentai's battle system script. The font I used has no way to express japanese characters, so you get a blank box. I'd change it, but it would conflict with other scripts if I updated to a new version. I'll just stop enemies defending.
5. Looks like I set it as "Below Hero". Oops!
6. Try pressing Shift. Then, once you've shifted to the catagory you want, press "Ecs" to return to item selection.
7. In VX's default battle system, it does hit twice. In Tankentai's, it hits twice as well but is displayed as one attack. May rename it.
8. Intentional. The enemies are pretty hard at the start and the skills are expensive.
9. I see... That will be changed.

Thanks for finding all these. What would I do without you?

@Everyone else:
Glad you're enjoying it. Keep in mind this is just the demo. If you want something changed, be sure to tell me!

demonlord5000
Fairly good game so far. Just letting ya know I updated my last post a bit. Really dont have that much to add, but figured you might want to see the updates as soon as possible. Fun game, though the bosses didnt really challenge me, and I was level 5 with all (i think), when I beat those last bosses. The characters draw ya in, and the story is enjoyable. I think I found all the bugs. If I missed any, they are probably very minor lol.

I have a natural talent for bug finding, so let me know when ya are ready for me to test some more lol. With me on your team, its assured we will find them all! I mean theres no way we should miss anything between the both of us.
Dark Gaia
I have now changed the barred windows. This is why you're on the Legionwood team Demonlord. I appreciate what you do for me.
Ark Reaver
Wondering when you would bring this out. He he. just make sure you finish it this time.

Just cause I cancelled my last two projects... No, I am adamant on finishing this one. Make sure you post back with your feedback. This is the best work I've ever done, and I want to hear everyone's thoughts. I WILL FINISH IT.
demonlord5000
Sounds good. I mean I know you dont want to incur the wrath of me and ark! Heh dont worry, im sure ya will. Im also good at coming up with ideas, so if you get writers block or something, let me know and I will help out with the story/game ideas, as well.

Also, if you have to rush as far as not being able to test it yourself as you go, dont worry about it. I can handle finding the bugs. Now me and ark should go come up with some secret plans with keeping ya on track...
Dark Gaia
Now, if you can keep me on track... Then I thank you. Yeah, but this game's pretty much set in concrete now anyway. You see, it connects heavily with Ark's upcoming game series, and we even sat down for hours and mapped out a collective storyline encompassing some 10 games or so, so I will make sure this is released. With fans like you demonlord, I'll be sure to.
RuGeaR1277
w0w! i must say this is an awesome game...
i love the demo and most importantly, i love your mapping skills!
can't wait for the final version...
great job, and keep it up, Dark Gaia! wink.gif

ADD:
okies... lolx... i finished the game...
it's damn good! =)

Remarks like that are what makes making this game worthwhile. It just proves to me that hard work pays off. If I work hard and craft an adventure from my heart, people will enjoy it.
Dark Gaia
Sorry for the double post, but I just made a big development choice which means that your save files will no longer be compatible, and that I changed the font as well to a more readable variety. So, don't bother keeping those save files.
Sanjiv
I am downloading this now, and will begin playing it this afternoon. From the screen shots and description, it looks great; I can't wait to try it out.

I'm going to leave this post here to remind me to review it. Be sure to check back on this post at night!
blueperiod
Thanks for changing the font. Honestly, it was the only thing keeping me from
playing it. smile.gif

(I have really crappy eyesight.)

Dark Gaia
Unfortunately the font change is only for the full version, so if you want to play the demo you're stuck with the current one. Also the font I changed it to isn't exactly a stock standard one either, but it is a lot easier to read. I also changed the save system and redid the intro scene on Antiferea's request.

Keep the feedback coming, and remember, whatever you don't like, tell me, as this is the demo and I sure can change it!
Canuck
I really really like what I've seen here, and my only problem is that it runs veeeerrryyy slooowwlly...

It may be my computer, but the cause may also be the fact that almost every tile has an event, even if it's just saying "It's an empty barrel." I would suggest that you remove some of those not-as-important events, because frankly I cannot play it when it runs this slowly. In terms of actual gameplay it looks great though. happy.gif
Dark Gaia
Don't worry. I thought that myself and removed all those events. Noteworthy ones, liek barrels that actually hold an item are identified by a green sparkle while all others have been removed. Only events of interest remain. I've also implemented an antilag script. Keep an eye out for a later demo or the full version which has only about 20% of the current lag.

Dark Gaia
I don't think you'll be disapointed. I've worked on this game for months to make sure it's absolutely perfect. IMO, I've crafted the best VX in existence so far.
Sanjiv
I played the first couple of minutes of the demo, and I ran into a gamebreaking bug. I will post it's screen here for you view.

First, a minor error when it comes to the face set. I tested the programming of the game when I tried to run Lann out of his house before collecting the money from the chest at the very first control scene. This is nothing big, just pointing this out so it's easier to edit your title in the long run; I know how frustrating it can be to run back through your work and change a million events around.

But then, after taking the money and talking with Liara, I ran into a gamebreaking bug. I don't know what this bug means, but it stopped the experience for me. I was just beginning to enjoy it, too.

I can't give a fair review since I only played five minutes into the game. So far, everything looks solid. As far as the text goes, the constant pauses seemed nice at first, but now it's wearing thin. Other than that, seems like a formidable production. I look forward to playing more of this title in the future.
Dark Gaia
The face bug you pointed out I have fixed, and also the other one too. You are playing an old demo which has a game wreaking bug in it which I fixed recently. Please see the first post in the thread and download the new version of the demo which works.

As for the constantly pausing text, I'm happy to report that in the full version there will not be any of it.

Speaking of updates, here's a screen from the redone intro (which replaces the character creation crap) showcasing the new font as well.

blueperiod
Aw man. That font is even worse. sad.gif

I mean no offense by this, but... is there any chance that you could possibly use a non-stylized font?

Anyway, I played a very small portion of the game today (I stopped after leaving the first town) before I had to take care of some stuff. Here's a few notes. I'll have a full review of your demo tomorrow.

- I think your game world is pretty interesting so far. It was pretty cool talking to the NPCs and hearing them mention what countries
they're from.

- Seeing the Masked Man at the inn scared the crap out of me.

- I went into the well to try and find the old woman's ring. I got my ass kicked pretty handily and had to restart the game since I didn't
save. I probably did something wrong, since I didn't end up talking to that other character in the tavern. Anyway, I thought it was pretty messed up to put this really dangerous dungeon in the first town. I know you put up a message that says "be careful" or something along those lines, but it still didn't specifically warn me of that dungeon's dangers itself (I honestly thought you were talking about examples later on in the game). In my opinion, I don't think you should even allow the player to access this dungeon at all in the beginning, since there seems to be no possible way of beating it (the lizardmen killed both my characters in one hit). Maybe you have it be accessible later?

That's about it. I think it's a pretty good game so far and will definitely follow it's progress.

Dark Gaia
Lol. That dungeon isn't even to be attempted until you're lvl 12. It's there sort of as a running joke to the old 80's RPGs Legionwood emulates in that in them you could just walk into the final dungeon at lvl 2 and die horribly. Just ignore the well mainly for the entirety of the demo. It's only a side quest after all. Perhaps I should add a lvl restriction to it? I just wanted the game to a have a free form feel, and I felt that adding a lvl restriction would take away some of that. It's a deadly dungeon, you shouldn't be there, but you're free to go there.

The world... Yes, I pride myself on my world. I try to imagine the world as an actual planet with actual lives in it. I try not to see the NPCs as NPCs and instead pretend they are people with backstories and lives, and it adds to the immersion.

As for the font... Well, it's getting mixed opionions. I may end up releasing two versions of the game, one with the font and one using Times New Roman or something, or even an option in game to turn it off.

Thanks for the feedback.
b3nd3kzz
Awesome work,DarkGaia!!

Downloading as we speak now~~
Canuck
One small gripe I have is that the houses are only one tile high... which leads to awkwardness when placing an Inn sign, etc.
Ark Reaver
The gameplay is good and so is the story (considering I know most of it, I think).
The characters are great in my opinion. I especially like Ark.

One thing though. In your original thread, Ark is depicted with one faceset in the character description and another in the menu.

Overall though, very good work.
Dark Gaia
The Ark face set problem was resolved. I knew you'd like it though Ark, as if you remember, Legionwood is based around a story that you set up.

Canuck, I know some find houses 1 tile high as awkward, but it was a stylistic choice, as I felt that 1, It is proportionate to the character sprites and 2. It emulates the FF 1, 2, 3 and 4 graphical style fairly well, which is what I was aiming for,
shameonme
I've played just past talking to the fruit seller, but I'm getting a bad frame rate, and I have 512 MB Ram and a 1.8 ghz processor.
Majingaara
Hey man! Would you be so kind as to telling us ALL the scripts you used in this game? It's AMAZING =D
Dark Gaia
@shameonme: The lag was a serious problem in this demo. Just to let you know, the full version will not have that problem, I've combined three very good anti lag scripts plus removed all unnesesary events. I don't intend on releasing another demo, so please, could you just either bear with it or wait for the full game? I've even tested the current work in progress on a 128MB Ram computer and it doesn't lag.

@Majingaara: I could... But not until the full version is released. If you want then, I can tell you, but while it is under wraps, I'd like to keep it top secret as there are a few exclusive to this game.

Sweet. When do you plan on the full release of the game?
Dark Gaia
Oh... Hmm, well I intend the full game to have over 30 hours of gameplay, so not until next year at least I'm afraid. It will be something to look out for though!

This is one of my most anticipated titles on here. happy.gif

I'm willing to wait.

You and about 10 others, as well as all the people over on RPGMakervx.net, RMxp.org, RPGMaker.net, GamingWorld.net and RMRK.net.

I'm working on this a bit everyday so that I don't make you wait too long, but thanks for sticking by me as I promise this will be something worth waiting a very long time for. My best work ever.
Ark Reaver
Sorry that it took me a while but I started Legionwood. And found a big problem that doesn't seem to have bothered anyone else. When I get the money out of the chest at the start, Liara walks over, they talk, then it stops, showing this error.

NoMethodError ocurred while running script.

undefined method 'unavailable=' for #<RPG::Actor:0x18d39a8>

I don't know why this is happening.

You're another one who unfortunately has got a hold of the old 1.0 version. In the latest version 2.0 Fixed, that problem is gone. Just a notice: If the Megaupload link is not up, then I will post new versions on RMNet first. As of now, both those links have the newest version. If you are downloading from RMN, please choose the one called "Version 2.0 Fixed" or you will experience this problem.
Dark Gaia
Sorry for double post (clicked Fast Reply instead of Edit) but for Ark Reaver and others who are experiencing the problem, I have updated the RMN link so that it lists the exact name of the fixed download before you click on it.

This is probably one of the best games I've played in a while. The story line is well developed, I'm wondering about what Lann and Liara keep avoiding to talk about (I haven't played too far, only up to the Selatan Plains). The battles are great, they're not too easy and your skills are incredibly useful. I've found that many RPGs I've played on VX have really lacked this, they're all hit enter repeatedly where as your game makes you think: "Should I take my chances and attack the enemy, or should I wait a turn and heal some HP and SP?". The mapping is great, though the first town has a few chokepoints which annoyed me a bit. Overall, this game looks very promising, I love having to build up levels and the logical thinking required. Keep the great work up. =)
Dark Gaia
Thanks man! You'll love the full version, trust me. I've taken all the things people liked best and amplified them, and removed all else that nobody liked. Unfortunately in the demo you don't find out Lann and Liara's dark little secret, but you will soon. Keep an eye out and thanks for the feedback. I'll work on fixing up those chokepoints.
Rpgmaster17
Maps 3, 4, 7, and 10 from top to bottom could use some work (Their kinda messy, especially 10 which looks plain and blocky). Anyway, besides that..this game look pretty good. It has potential to be a solid game, hopefully you'll complete this because i can tell a lot of work has gone into it. I downloaded the demo just a bit ago..and after i play it i'll be sure to give you my feedback. Also, should'nt you give credit to the artist/creator of the main characters face sets and character sets?
