So the shiny new OS from Redmond, WA is about to hit stores on Friday. What I like about windows 8 is the fact that performance wise(only reason why I'm upgrading my dev system) it's superior to windows 7. The start orb was added back and can easily be added back through the registry, all the gadgets can be added back with third party tools but never used them of course I use conky when need to.
The Metro Ui... well it's pretty and a big full screen start menu and that's how I'm going think when in Metro as that's really all it is if you use the desktop.
And it'll only set you back $139.99 or $70 if you're upgrading. I'd personally just go with a fresh install.

Between 7 and 8 there's not really a big difference accept you half to click on the desktop metro icon to open it, the huge difference is speed and performance. As I've said 1 Gig to 400 megabytes is worth the upgrade minus the 1-2 second delay clicking on the desktop icon.
