Are you real?
The clock said 4:30pm, only half an hour till the party would start. Kanade felt her stomach churning with anxiety. "This is my best day ever, I shouldn't feel so nervous." She forced herself to smile, "I wont mess today up! This day is going to be perfect." Poor Kanade, she wanted so badly for this day to be special. Most people payed no respect to her, and so this occasion was important. She was born schizophrenic, so many people made fun of her. Most people didn't hang out with her because of her illness. She was not displeasing in appearance or personality, it's just that people have a hard time dealing with the abnormal. She did have friends though, Marika and Teran. However, they lived across the country, so she could only talk to them via internet. That's why today was special. They had gotten plane tickets and were coming to visit her on her 16th birthday.

Kanade descended the stairs toward the front door, her dress cascading down the steps. She had picked a simple white dress of fine lace, it had a beautiful bow tied in the back, the frills ran down to the floor. "Today is the day" her mother said from the kitchen. Kanada managed a smile as she opened the glass door. The decorations were perfect. The colorful lights were hung across the sky, the cake looked delicious, and above the music box there was a large banner [Happy Birthday Kanade]. She felt like crying, she imagined when her friends would walk in, marveling at the party, and then they would meet eachother's eyes and embrace. She loved huge. She loved them more than anything, especially when her mother would give them. Oh how she missed those days.

5:00, it's time for the party. Where are the guests? Kanade began to worry, what if their plane was delayed, what if they couldn't make it? What if something had happened to them on the way. Should she have warned them about her neighborhood? There had only been one real incident in the neighborhood, but everyone still seemed shaken up about it. It was 2 years ago, a young girl, probably in the 8th grade, was found dead outside the schoolgrounds. This was a scarring experience for many of the children, but Kanade never really understood it. It was sad that she didn't see the girl at school anymore but they weren't really friends. She didn't get why it was so bad.
Maybe the same thing happened to her friends. Now she was getting restless. "No. I have to calm down. They're probably fine."
5:45, they still weren't here. Her one day to be happy, and it turned out to amount to nothing. She felt very alone, sitting there in her front yard. All the colored lights blinking, but for what? Its as if they were mocking her, each flash of light tempting her with what real happiness could be, yet they were out of reach. This lonely feeling had returned. She hadn't felt this lonely since her parents had passed away. She began to cry, not like a misty eyed whimper, she opened her mouth and screamed, her eyes flowing with sorrow. "Why did I lie to myself?!" she screamed, clutching her head, "This is just like everyone else, whenever I get close to someone they disappear!" Her screaming echoed through the streets. Suddenly she heard talking. She quieted her cries to a small sniffle, she looked over to the gate. It slowly creaked open, and a boy's head popped through. "I hate to intrude, but is this-- Kanade!"
