Illuminated Badassery is a highly comical, somewhat satirical (due to poking fun at several things, such as pop culture and... well, itself) and lighthearted action RPG, that, as aforementioned, contains mature content throughout, so obviously it's aimed at late teens and adults (though anyone can play it as no one pays attention to discretion anyway!). To compromise for its tone, the visuals are almost completely cartoonish, with some facesets I've drawn myself and edited, (simplistically, though, to keep in touch with the humor) along with several edits to character sprites. The story and game in general are not supposed to be overly complex, but still at least able to keep the player's attention throughout. This is my fourth foray into RPG making, though you might still see a few amateur-ish mistakes here and there. I've still done my best to keep everything as stream-lined as possible, in any case. Feel free to point out bugs and stuff; I'm pretty open to criticism, though don't be too harsh.

The city of Futoria is being threatened by the evil Hairy, a half-beetle, half-alien menace. Everyone is scared out of their wits, and no one is rising up to this diabolical creature. Who (or what) can save this poor city? WHO?!

That is an answer for another time... or hell, now; Joe Carter Mard, a brave young snowman that looks uncannily similar to Jack Frost, decides to rise to the challenge and defeat this malicious bastard for the sake of his city. Will he be successful in his endeavors?

Only time can tell. But one thing's for sure; he's totally bringing his best friends, as this is going to be badass.

The game's most story-wise important area is Futoria, a half-modern, half-futuristic city (the world this takes place in is Earth, though thus far it is not important to the plot), and the area the main antagonist, Hairy, threatens the most. The game's main hub (not introduced until a little while into the game) is the Portal, a small beach-like link to 8 other areas the main characters are forced to explore and protect (though it is possible to unlock optional areas). It is run by a small piranha named Jawger. Overall, though, the most important area in the game is Futoria, as it is the home of Joe Mard and his bros.

Heroes

Main/Playable

Joesph Carter Mard

Age: 18

Species: Snowman

Other fact: He looks like Jack Frost on purpose... yeah.

The game's main (anti)hero. He is a foul-mouthed, occasionally unintelligent, perverted, mischievous, and sarcastic douchebag. However, he's willing to save his city (and, evidently, the world) on account of the fact that the guy threatening it is a douche himself, and he considers being one "his job". Deep down, he's fairly noble, nice and heroic, but on most occasions he simply doesn't want to show these traits, and would rather adopt the persona of a stereotypical jock (but you have to admit; jocks are awesome).

Broski Broham Broster (also known as "Mr. Dudelicious")

Age: 18

Species: Human

Other fact: He wears nothing but boxer shorts because he likes being half-naked. Go figure.

Joe's best friend. He's known him since childhood and has always hung out with him, along with Jabron (Joe's other best friend who will be described shortly). He is a human that prefers to be half-naked for the hell of it, and formerly resided in Texas, hence his Southern accent and archetypical hillbilly nature. His kind (though impulsive and loud) nature serves as a contrast to Joe's unfavorable nature, though he occasionally acts mischievous when he feels it's absolutely necessary. Overall, though, he's the most level-headed of the main characters.

Jabron Mohammed Elf

Age: 20

Species: Elf (half African American)

Other fact: He's ballin'. And he looks like DMX.

Joe's other best friend that has also known him since childhood, along with Broski. He constantly spouts Ebonics due to being born in Atlanta and being half-black (yes, that means he has a particular fondness of the n-word; racial term haters beware). He is also extremely obnoxious and perverted, along with loud and being quick to anger. However, he has a big heart and does not believe in holding grudges (though he makes villains an exception). Due to being an elf, he has the natural ability of communicating with other chimeras and animals, which definitely proves useful at several points in the main characters' adventure.

Enurji Model 4200

Age: ???

Species: Energy sphere with robotic features

Other fact: He likes Bill Nye. Be friends with him already!

A former veteran henchman of Hairy who joins Joe and his friends during a protection sequence in one of the areas they go to. He is, as stated before, an energy sphere with robotic features implemented in him. He is the most intelligent of the group, but also has a tendency to swear and act juvenile. Regardless, he is the eyes of the group and helps them out constantly throughout the game, even when they don't need it.

Non-playable

Skeeter King

Local Futoria guard who befriends Joe and friends. However, he's often manipulated into allowing access to the outskirts by the group, somewhat diminishing his job. He doesn't really mind, however, as he's a mostly chill dude (as Joe puts it).

Jawger Piranha

A major ally of Joe and friends. He manages the Portal, the beach-like link to the 8 areas around the world the group must temporarily protect, along with their own home. Mostly polite and helpful, but occasionally becomes annoyed at the stupidity of the four. All in all, though, he greatly respects the group for rising up to the diabolical Hairy.

Noteworthy fact
Although Jawger is unplayable throughout the majority of the game, through the usage of a special item, you can ultimately make him playable. This makes him one of the six (that's right; six) optional characters.

Optional

Scott Mard

Joe's older brother who stole his PlayStation Vita because he's a gigantic asshat. Although initially against helping the four, he'll eventually help if you have a personal conversation with him.

Doug Richards

A professional wrestler, animal tamer, writer, actor, football/baseball player and overall celebrity. As you might suspect, he's extremely popular in Futoria and the world in general. This dude is comparable to Stone Cold because of how husky he is, bro; seriously. Although fairly arrogant (rightfully so, given his popularity), he is a heroic individual deep down and assuming you meet him at the right time and right place, he'll join your party without question.

Sophie "Jessica" Spring

A friendly, but ditzy and overly dramatic diva who is also a massive, MASSIVE whore. She lives with her millions of boyfriends in a hotel/bar, and depending on the circumstances, she'll join your party. Oh... and she has big titties. That's a plus too, right?

Violet Spring

Sophie's beloved sister. While much more intelligent and serious than her older sibling, she loves her dearly and would not trade her for the best step-sister ever. She's not nearly as into sex as her sister is, but occasionally will show off a nip here and there if she feels like it. She'll join the group, but only if you do a few things for her.

Oscar

A typical jungle-dwelling monkey that loves bananas more than anything... like, ever. Seriously, give him any type of banana (ANY type) and he'll go apeshit (no pun intended). He might even join your party!

Outside of his banana obsession, Oscar is a very snarky little chimp that'll often make profane comments at the expense of his friends. Ultimately, though, he has a big heart and is very protective of his loved ones.

Villains

Hairy

Age: Believed to be hundreds of years old

Species: Beetle/Alien

Other fact: Likes Pizza Hut.

The main antagonist of the game, and Joe's fated archenemy. He is believed to be of very old age, having existed around the time of Joe's dad, Stan Mard, who was his archrival. Believing Joe to be just as much of a threat as Stan, Hairy is hellbent on killing him by any means necessary. Joe hates him on the grounds of being "today's douche", and is equally dedicated to removing him from existence.

Doom

Age: 30

Species: Human/Cyborg

Other fact: Is badass as shit.

One of Hairy's top henchmen, and partner of Sorrow. He has a WW2 soldier attitude, and is therefore extremely loyal to Hairy, considering himself an enemy of Joe. His half-robotic body allows him to emit a bone-shattering death cry and fiery bursts in combat. He has no fears, and will kill anyone to accomplish his goals, bar his companions.

Sorrow

Age: ???

Species: Robot

Other fact: Also badass as shit.

One of Hairy's top henchmen, and partner of Doom. He is a cold-blooded, soulless, cruel, and arrogant robot bearing a resemblance to Iron Man (to semi-parody him). He also shares a long-time rivalry with Stan Mard, having often paired with Hairy years ago to mess with him emotionally. He is just as determined about his goals as Doom is. He also shares a close friendship with him, often calling him "one of my best friends".

-5-10 hours of gameplay, depending on whether you decide to take in all the sidequests or just rush through the story mode

-action RPG gameplay via Vampyr SBABS 12 (possible engine change in the future) with plenty of bosses and enemies to tear up

-great deals of comic relief; the game is very rarely legitimately serious, so this might be the game to play if you're looking for something lighthearted

-DMX Tetris and Doritos Pong (no... not joking)

-several puzzles, ranging from escaping saws in a lava room to running up a staircase in a limited amount of time to button-pressing puzzles to trivia questions to even an escape sequence!

-the game utilizes Jet's Stamina System, meaning you can only run when you feel it is 100% necessary; conserve dem Stamina Points!

-OriginalWij's Basket Shop script is used to add a bit of flavor to typical shopping

-special save points called "Save-O-Trons" are used to give the game a bit more of a console feel; the option to save is completely eliminated in the game's main menu as well to further that feel

-8 dir movement, if that's your thing

-you can take screenshots via F5! (for when you wanna gloat about your character's ultra-awesome stats or post bugs or whatever; praise convenience)

-mostly custom content, with some RTP stuff used (graphics), but very little RTP sound effects are used, and no RTP music is used (I honestly can't stand EITHER, but I'm fine with RTP graphics as long as they aren't criminally overused)

-deposit/storage system for when your inventory is full of items you don't need/want

-varied/insane soundtrack

(Because screenshots make everything cooler; and trust me, I've got quite a few)

Updated: NEW screenshots!

The new title screen

Yes, Drunken Paladin reference

(If it's too many screenshots, let me know; I'll take down several)

Wellllll...

Mapping: 100%
Database: 100%
NPCs: 100%
Game overall: ...100%!!! I spent a long, hard time making the game, so I hope you all enjoy it.

If the game is successful enough, I might consider making DLCs, and maybe a full-on sequel if the DLCs are well-received too.

Because even the most badass games must have at least one bug:

-visual glitches in combat here and there; I honestly dunno how to fix these. For now, tho, Escing to the main menu and back out generally fixes them, and even then I've only occasionally encountered them in play-testing so they shouldn't be much more than just noticeable issues

-maybe an NPC/event bug or two, I dunno; if any come up, lemme know; I shall fix them if referenced in posts

-equip menu occasionally bugs out, causing the entire game to crash (THIS IS VERY RARE)

I deeply apologize if I miss anyone.

Scripts:

Vlad - Vampyr SBABS/Logo Screen
RAFAEL_SOL_MAKER - Smooth Window Opening
KGC/Mr. Anonymous - KGC_ExtendedEquipScene, MiniMap, OldEventCommands

http://www.mediafire.com/?pdhgvkbrgoybmau - Official download (v 1.3, see below for changes)

http://www.mediafire.com/?ug9r6sxzfkr41gu - BGM folder

Or alternatively

http://www.mediafire.com/?2a0e6j3skkfg273 - Audio folder as a whole

Changes:

1.3/Current version

-many map edits have been done so it is subtly more obvious where to go and what to do
-first battle against Hairy is slightly modified so Hairy doesn't block your hits as much
-several dialogue edits
-BGM stays the same once again, transfer as necessary

1.2

-a few map edits to spice things up
-MAJOR edit regarding optional party members; the party manager is now unlocked via a switch in the 'ur fatyt' area, removing the need to unlock Scott to get the manager in the first place. You can still only acquire each party member at a certain time, however
-some dialogue edits
-BGM folder has stayed the same, as I've not added any additional tracks (...yet[?]). Just transfer the BGM folder from 1.1 to the Audio folder and whatnot

1.1

-fixed intro so it goes at a more reasonable speed
-clarified how the shop works
-removed a major error in the Portal, where the helpers only appear if you say you don't know what the other areas are called
-removed the Ammo window due to its pointless inclusion
-edited every Save-O-Tron so they only tell their jokes once, eliminating need to mash Enter/Z to save
-minor edits to enemy stats

The BGM and game folders are separate to accommodate for Mediafire's 200 MB limit for free users; the game has over 110+ tracks, so yeah. Just place the BGM folder in the Audio folder and you should be good to go.

Enjoy!

Some comments I have so far:

> There is an "ammo" section on your HUD that you mention you are never going to use, so what is the point of having it there? If you don't want to remove it by scripting, you could always just change the graphic. You could simply create a blank, transparent image file, that is the same dimensions as the "ammo" section, and name it the same name as the ammo image... If that works with whatever script you are using. I just feel like it shouldn't be there if you aren't using it.

> You have about two paragraphs per page for the introduction, and I was only given about 3-4 seconds to read through it all. It needs to be slowed down a bit. Try reading the paragraphs out loud, counting how many seconds it takes for you (assuming you aren't a speed reader) to read through it, and adjust the timing accordingly (1 second is 60 frames in VX... I think)

> Create a switch for the save-a-tron so that it only tells it's joke once. In the beginning of the game, his dialogue takes up about 5 speech windows, and while it's funny to hear what it has to say for the first time, it gets old REALLY FAST when I have to button mash just to get to the save screen. It's minor, but it's still kind of annoying.

> Your shop system is really confusing. I was pressing the keys you specified to "buy" "select" and whatever but they did nothing, and when I tried selecting an item to purchase I actually thought I bought the item, though apparently I was only selecting it? I think you need to make it a little more clear as to how to use the shop in this game, or in my opinion scrap that entire system and just use the default shop system VX already has. I mean, it's not like your system really differentiates itself from the default other than make things more complicated, so I personally feel you should just get rid of it.

I kind of appreciate this game in the sense of watching a B movie. It's tasteless and corny, but that's what makes it funny.

I kind of appreciate this game in the sense of watching a B movie. It's tasteless and corny, but that's what makes it funny.

1. I didn't think the ammo thing would really bug you, but I'll do that for a future update.

2. I thought the speed of the intro would be enough for most readers; I guess I didn't take other's reading speed into enough consideration. I'll fix that up too.

3. I'll keep that in mind; I didn't think that'd annoy people either, since several other games with humorous save points keep the joke in check even if you examine once.

4. I KNEW someone would comment on the shop thing; yeah, I'll definitely upload something that explains it more, it's just that original's shop script was out for a while so I assumed everyone knew how it worked. Sorry.

And yeah, the tasteless B-movie thing was kinda what I was going for. If there's nothing else worth noting, I'm glad you seem to be enjoying it so far. smile.gif Any comments on gameplay, btw? I spent the most time on keeping the gameplay balanced.
