Moving to General Game Engines Discussion.

Let me tell you something: if you want to make a 3D game, work on your maths. I mean, college-level maths. You'll also need a solid engine like Unity and some programming knowledge. It's a whole different level compared to RPG Maker.

I'm with kread on this one. Even though I have learned quite a bit of Ruby while i've been here, i've been branching of into C, HTML, JS, CSS, and a few other languages so I might have some understanding when I hit college. You gotta remember though, you not only have 3 axes, but physics as well. It's wise to wait awhile. I would recommend though, if you want to get a feel for 3D rpg making, to try the Playstation rpgmakers.

html + css isn't really a language but I know what you mean ^^
A great way to start programming (in my opinion) is learning basic (Dos dialect) - (http://www.oocities.org/KindlyRat/GWBASIC.html (WIN XP or DOS emulator required)
You don't need college level courses to be able to learn how to program, the web has an infinite amount of knowledge waiting to be learned.
With some dedication you can pull off anything.

You may not need college-level maths to program but you will need it to program a 3D game. When you start working with multi-dimensional shapes, you have to bleed vector calc.

I don't know jazz about programming, so I'll have to give you the less technical advice of just slowing down.
You want to work on three different (but at the same time interlinked) games at once. And you want to do it on three different engines (you mentioned before one's on XP and the other on VX right?).

I'm sorry but it just seems unrealistic that one would ever get finished. And if any were, it would take infinitely longer because you've divided your time between learning how to proficiently use two other engines and working on two other projects.

Trig and geometry are going to play a big role in a 3d game, however it's completely doable and you don't need to be a math expert! We live in a digital world and it's the information age, you can find anything you need to on the fly!

I would personally recommend Torque3D over Unity any day but that is just personal preference, also I would start out using a 3d engine to get accustomed to 2D because it's still not going to be as easy as RPG maker and it's a good start as you may end up using 2D elements in your game. For example, Dialog boxes, huds(who uses 3-dimensonal huds in a game?) menus and so forth,

Start with 2D like normal and once you get good and I mean by actually able to create 2D games of all genre's than go to 3D and repeat again but in 3D.

Best way to learn how to program and it's fun but very challenging.

I understand that some people despise Python (including me because I couldn't memorize anything other than the typical "hello world", even though I read a whole book on python and looked at the documentation)

But, if you learn Python, you can use Blender to make a 3D RPG, I love Blender I find it easy to use as a program for 3D, it's designed for making 3D games too, on top of that to make games with it you don't HAVE to learn Python, but for an RPG I think you would.

I'm currently using the CryEngine for my own project, the sandbox editor is pretty sweet and my favorite world editor next to torque3d's editor.

You can download the SDK and it's tools here.
http://www.crydev.net/

Documentation.
http://freesdk.crydev.net/dashboard.action...SelectedTab=all

If you can afford it I would highly suggest investing in the autodesk suite, it has some pretty insane tools. 3ds/maya + mudbox = awesomeness! You can also get it by other means but it's a no no in anyone's book,

CryEngine uses the lua programming language, lua is pretty simple to learn so it shouldn't take you long before you make something pretty cool!

to be honest i recommend you to make a simple action 3D game before making 3D rpg smile.gif
you can use 3D Rad, which is very simple engine and it's free for making simple games:
http://www.3drad.com/

beside programing !! if you will modeling by yourself, you must learn how to use some good software, like blender which is challenging but very famous and his many tuts and tips spreading over the web * also blender integrated with game engine biggrin.gif *
www.blender.org

if you want another good program famous for making anime/rpg look model, you can get Metasequoia (free / shareware version)
http://metaseq.net/english/
demo:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vygFabxMZX8
demo 2 (Shining Force Exa Making of ):
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vygFabxMZX8

if you already feeling lazy to learn all that, you still able to get 3D Daz Studio and custom your own models with ease !!
you can Get Daz Studio 4 Pro for Free (before march 31 2012):
http://www.daz3d.com/

however !! for using their contents for game, you need to buy another license (which is a bit greedy) that cost about 500$ for indie. sleep.gif

sorry for my english, it's not my native language ^^
hoped it's helped ^__^

regards
