Hi everyone and I apologize if this has been asked already which I am sure it has but I haven't used an RPG maker since the 2003 one and I remember having a blast with it when it actually worked. Now that I have downloaded the xp trial and have been messing around with it, its working great! My question though is which I should go with because I have been browsing the forum and finding answers to things and I don't know if XP would be better for me. For instance, the world map can't have different enemy areas like before. I don't want the same weak enemies to always be encountered on the map and as far as I can tell, without scripting (which looks very confusing to me, and I know absolutely nothing about) its not possible. Also is there a way to alter tile and chip sets, just like the colors mostly. I'd like more unique characters and enemies. Would VX be better for me or XP? I am a newbie but I can catch on fast and I have loved this program since Rpg maker 95, the very first one I ever played. I am planning on buying a digital keyboard and writing my own music (midi files) as well! So that will also be a factor, depending on how or if you can upload your own music to the database? Thanks for all the help everyone and sorry for rambling on smile.gif

First of all, welcome to RPG Revolution smile.gif

I understand you're in trouble with that decision,so, here you are the most notable differences:

RMXP features unavailable in RMVX::
1. If you don't intend to use a single script, consider that RPG Maker VX has an awful default battle system:
>damage is displayed in a text box;
>there's no cast animation on the skill user;
>game party members have no battler graphics, you are able to see only their name, HP and SP;
>battle backgrounds, also, are inexistent in RMVX without a good script...
2. In VX, tilesets are less customizable and is almost impossible to make, for example, a ship with the default tiles; in RMXP you have access to an almost infinite tileset customization, since you can import and/or modify any existing tileset.
3. As regards world map issue: there are several script about this... ok, if you aren't planning in using scripts, well, this could be a major problem...
4. RMXP costs something less than RMVX, despite offering a good mix of instruments which can allow you to create good games;

And now, VX features unavailable in XP:
1. World map can be organized better;
2. Airships, ships and boats are already set up (don't require scripting);
3. Fast event creation (doors, chests, inns);
4. Dungeon creator (fast map creator - nothing special, only a random maze made up of walls and floor...);
5. Letter-by-letter messages with face portraits displayed;
6. Moving parallaxes by default;

Note that every added VX feature can be done in RMXP just adding the right script...
Obviously, the opposite is also true. With suitable scripts, you can fix this annoying battle system issue, while as regards mapping, well this isn't such easy...

N.B. Remember that MIDI/MP3/OGG music can be imported in both versions, no difference between these two. I have a synth too and had no problem in importing my music... just remember to use a program like FL Studio to record, since it's not automatic and usually keyboards aren't provided with standalone recording programs. Remember also to check what cable do you need to connect your keyboard to the computer... MIDI-to-USB cable can cost even 40/50 €.
Some synthetitzers, like Korg X50, can be connected just with a simple USB cable, removing that issue.

By the way, animation files, sound files, battlers and parallaxes (panoramas) are actually the same in both programs, so you can download both RTPs and use graphics from both makers...

However, the best way to get rid of scripts is trying without fear! Just copy one of the scripts, paste it above main, try to modify it and if it caues trouble, delete it... You can find some good tutorials here and there smile.gif

In my personal opinion, RMXP is better, but I'm a long-time-scripter, so this could be not relevant...
In fact, RMVX hugely disappointed me. I've uninstalled trial version after two days. Default battle system is the most awful ever...

I hope this can help...

Jens

Thank you! I will go with Xp because its seems to have more of what I need. I'll just have to learn scripting haha. Another question since everyone else seems advanced. I havent found a good tileset within the program that makes a descent world map so I was going to either make one or find one online and import it. How do I import them and what is Graphics gale that everyone is talking about using to create tilesets? Thanks again!

Badaboom badabing...
World Map Tileset right here.

And to import click on materials which should be located at the top right next to the database option, when inside of this simply hover over tilesets and click import. Remember when importing to set your translucent color by clicking it. Usually all resources found online will have some kind of bright odd color that takes up 90% of the picture. That'll be the color you'll want to click to make it translucent.

Both this site, and youtube are chock full of tutorials, and google can always help.
About the tileset thing, you just save the picture in like your pictures folder or if you're using Chrome you can always just import from downloads. You don't need to put it in a certain file.

wow thanks for the fast replies lol. So has anyone figured out how to make the land tiles more rounded? They are so square right now it looks bad.

im a huge obsessed fan of the old final fantasy games and just a simple world mape is all I want to start with. The land formations are so square yuck.

This should work:

http://downloads.rpg-palace.com/details.php?id=103

It has different climates.

[Edit]

You put it into your game's name folder/Graphics/Tilesets then open the game editor and enter the database, in the tileset tab add it into the game.

I have to warn you tough you will need to make the pass abilities yourself unless you find a demo project with the tileset already set.

thanks anyway guys. I tried that Inquistor one you just posted last night but its too wide and half of it doesn't show up when I import it. I do know how the pass through tiles thing works because I was creating maps alot on the older programs. Just can't find a good world map with round land edges.

I guess I could put my own together but I don't know how that graphics gale thing works

It's for rpg maker xp not for vx.

If your using xp don't know why it's not showing correctly.

[Edit]

Uhm don't know if I got you right but you don't need to import it unless you edit it just put it in the tileset folder and add it from the editor, database/tileset.

I did import it and its cut off half way through the city and the rest doesn't appear. Its alright anyway. I did find a great world map set that someone put together and it has ff4 5 and 6 map stuff plus a ton of different things. I am still running into the same problem. Land formations. This is horrible. The old rpg makers didn't make the land like this, its just so bad looking. I can't seem to find anything to make the land look like land instead of a bunch of green squares

Heh that is the problem with most non custom maps but with patience it can be hidden a little.

It's also partly the fault of the engine as the character moves square to square (Unless you use a script) so they are made for that reason.

Well good luck on your project smile.gif

I think im gonna pass on this. Maybe if I am lucky they will make a new one that will have the map creating back. I loved 2003 and even 2000 but there was hardly any resources back when I was using it. Seems like the same thing now but I have two things I found to create sprites so thats even better but I have the trial version only of xp.

You may want to look around for information about RPG Maker VX Ace then, and find out its features.
It may have what you're looking for; it's not the same as VX.

I would use Ace over the existing RPG Makers, the base scripts are much cleaner and are easier to follow(big plus for starting scripters or even ruby programmers to get used to rgss).

Ace uses the full version of Ruby 1.9.2, the previous makers used edited version of Ruby 1.8.4 that's what I've read anyway/

XP still has individual tile layers, ace has 4 but you can't edit them individually.
