The problem has three causes.
1) Auto Event on, and the character is waiting for the event to end. 2) Loop on, and you need to break the loop. 3) Everything's freezing (you have a code that's repeating pretty heavy stuff very fast, and lagging your computer to the point of stall) -- The latter sometimes happens when you have a call common event that's called by a parallel process (PPs tend to repeat)
If it seems like #3, recheck some of the common events and screen events. Make it so they only operate under certain conditions, they wait a certain amount of time between periods, hide/show screen is set to default (instant/no trans) rather than Fade Out, and events in common events end in End Event Processing, and Parallel Processes end with Erase Event after the first call (don't worry, when you re-enter the screen it'll do this again.

Maybe it's a problem with your keyboard? See if plugging in a different one helps at all. Have you installed anything that may have affected anything like this between the time that it did and didn't work? I've never encountered a problem like this so I'm not really sure if my advice is helping.
