Rise of Tongzhi
(As many of you know, this is a short little story based off of my game.)

Sun and Mingyu watched the city of Xianfan from a mountain top in the far distance. Sun knew he could never go back there. Bertrand would kill him if he did. Mingyu glanced at Sun for a brief moment. She couldn't help but ask...
"Did they treat everyone fairly?" she asked.
By everyone, Mingyu was talking about the chinese slaves left under Bertrand's rule. She was well aware of her people's enslavement...and will stop at nothing from liberating her country.
"From what I heard...no...I was kept in the wine cellar a long time. I never really recieved any news from the outside..." Sun replied.
Mingyu's eyes began to water up...She could imagine the horror the chinese must have faced.
Suddenly, she gritted her teeth and tightened her fist. She grew tired of the occupation. It enraged her to the point of desperation.
Quickly rising to her feet she yelled...
"I HATE YOU!!!"
Sun watched as Mingyu shouted. It almost made him do the same.
Just then, Akihiko approached them. He closed his eyes and sighed.
Akihiko knew how much the chinese people meant to both Sun and Mingyu. He knew Mingyu would kill just about anyone if it meant her people's freedom.
Akihiko could care less about the chinese. His hatred ventured elsewhere...in Japan. Emperor Meiji, the new emperor of Japan, tricked his father into his own death. Sometimes, Akihiko dreams of pushing his katana through Meiji's chest. However, he knew such a dream would have to wait.

"Such anger can stem from a bloodthirsty ego. If you don't work on your hatred toward them, then you will put all of us in danger" said Akihiko.

Sun looked over his shoulder and noticed Akihiko standing there.
Akihiko tagged along with them a little over a while ago. He didn't know who he was, or why a japanese shogun warrior was stationed in China.
Nonetheless, Sun never trusted Akihiko. For years, the chinese and japanese people have been at war over small oppositions. He could never understand
Akihiko's motive.
Mingyu lowered her arms and turned around slowly.
Akihiko could see the anger and desperation in her eyes.
"What do you care?! You know nothing of the torture acts our people had to face! You're not even chinese...you're shogun! Your people wanted us to die!" Mingyu shouted.
She quickly crouched down into the Fu Jow Pai (Tiger Claw) stance.
Sun rose to his feet. Even though he distrusted Akihiko...he was right...

"...Mingyu...maybe he's right...We can't start war with each other..."
Sun said. He gently placed his hand on Mingyu's right shoulder.

Akihiko rolled his eyes at Mingyu. Maybe it isn't her fault why she is so angry...that much he understands now. However, he will not back away if she intends to kill him.
"You may want to listen to the slave boy" said Akihiko.

After that remark, Mingyu pushed Sun away from her and rushed Akihiko with a roundhouse kick to the right side of his head.
Akihiko rose his right arm upward, the guard strapped to his forearm blocked the kick. He grabbed Mingyu's right foot while it still lingered in the air and thrusted his grounded left foot to the back of Mingyu's left ankle. The move intended to trip Mingyu...and it did. Once Mingyu's back hit the ground, Akihiko continued the grip on her right leg. Akihiko's foot pressed firmly down on Mingyu's neck while she was down. She tried to set herself free...but was pinned. She gasped, whimpered, but showed the same amount of anger all at once. She started punching Akihiko's foot.
Once he realized that Mingyu was beaten, Akihiko looked down on her in shame.
"I'am not your enemy...atleast not right now. It is sad what happened to your people, that much I can say at the very least. I can kill you right now if I wanted...I can apply more pressure on your throat and shatter your bones, but you have suffered enough. Besides, your Fu Jow Pai still needs work."
Akihiko said.
He released his submission on Mingyu and walked away.
Mingyu rolled on her side and coughed. She held her hand over her neck, slight tears ran down her eyes.
Sun knelt down beside her. He couldn't bare to see someone as beautiful as Mingyu get beaten so harshly...
"...Are you alright...?" Sun asked.
At that point, Mingyu gave up. She laid down and bursted in tears. The occupation caused a lot of pain...even outside British occupied territory.

((Some will be shorter than others))

"Get out of my office and finish what I told you to do!" shouted British aristocrat, Bertrand IV, who is in charge of the slave industry that has fell upon the great people of China. He slammed his hands on his desk to confirm his animosity. With a brief glimpse of his pistol laying ontop of his desk, he snatched it, pointed it at the man who was shivering as he left the office, and pulled the trigger. The bullet pierced the man's lower back. He screamed as he fell forward.

"Ugh! Everyday it is the same excuse! I grow tired of this foolishness! How difficult could it be to kill a slave? These imbeciles cannot handle such a task!" Bertrand started screaming and shouting.

A British guard, who was trained not to move...or even show any type of facial expression, listened to Bertrand's rampant remarks. The guard chuckled slightly, amused by Bertrand's anger. Bertrand turned around and shot the man in the groin as he walked past him impatiently. The guard hollered intensely. As he fell to his knees, a couple of Bertrand's other henchmen rushed to wrap a hankerchief around the guard's mouth, forcing him to stay silent. Bertrand turned around, pointed his finger toward the guards and shouted..."You find Sun Zaizshi! and you kill him!"

Before he made his exit, Bertrand shot yet another guard as he walked out of the building that led to his main office. The last guard to get shot in the chest was instantly killed. Once Bertrand was escorted out of the building, a few of his servants helped him into a fancy cart where his wife, Harriet Bertrand, waited patiently inside.

((My idea of an antagonist is...if you're going to be evil, be evil! If you're holding someone hostage and threatens to kill them for whatever gain...then do it already, stop waiting until law enforcement come and apprehend you. Bertrand is ruthless and will even kill his wife if it means making more money. Rise of Tongzhi is unmerciful and holds no punches.))

Nightfall had fell upon our stranded travelers.
Sun, Mingyu, James, and Akihiko...all decided to make camp
in the Baor forest. Rumor was, that a lone shaolin monk,
who took refuge in the forest, fought off hordes of British
soldiers before he was completely overwhelmed.
It seems everyone had fell asleep in their tents, except Sun who was kept awake by
Akihiko's training excersises near the camp fire.
Sun slowly poked his head out of his tent, watching Akihiko swing his katana around
furiously. What was the matter with Akihiko, Sun pondered.
Akihiko lowered his head, while depositing his katana inside its shealth.
He was soon interrupted by Mingyu, who appeared behind him.
Akihiko slowly turned his head over his shoulder to spot her.
"Teach me." said Mingyu..."Teach me everything you know!" Mingyu shouted as she
sounded desperate. Slight tears ran down her eyes. She wanted to learn more...
she couldn't hold back any longer.
Akihiko turned around and gave his full attention.
Sun looked on at the conversation. Did Mingyu trust Akihiko?

"Teaching others who are not of my descent is forbidden. Your masters will be
displeased if they found that you broke the sacred code." said Akihiko.

Mingyu flung her left arm to the side..."I don't care!" she hollered.
"Every night I'am taught to sit and meditate for hours...but..."

Akihiko sighed. "I know..." he said, "You want to free your country and you will
do what it takes to do so...even go as far as to break the code."
Akihiko turned around and started walking away..."Sorry, but I cannot comply."
Mingyu's eyes turned angry. She sprinted toward Akihiko with an intent to fight him.
Before she could make a move, Akihiko viciously turned around withdrawing his katana.
The sharp end of the blade, gently pushed against Mingyu's throat. She paused just in time.
They both narrowed their eyes at each other. Mingyu's eyes full of persistance, anger,
and sadness...Akihiko's was full of ambition, rage, and pride.

The little confrontation made Sun angry. He bursted from his tent and appeared before them.
"You leave her alone...shogun!" said Sun.
Akihiko's eyes drifted toward Sun. Mingyu could see the dedication in Sun's eyes. She knew he
would do anything to aid her...but he was a fool if he thought he could defeat
a highly trained shogun warrior. Mingyu began teaching Sun Fu Jow Pai a couple of days
ago...but Sun still needs tons of work with his technique.

"Sun...go back to your tent, I have everything under control..." pleaded Mingyu.

"You think you can just boss us around! Come into our country and do whatever you want!" Sun argued.

"Sun!" Mingyu screamed.

"I'll kill you!!!" Sun suddenly raced toward Akihiko, using the Tiger Paw technique Mingyu had
taught him. Tiger Paw bends the hand until the knuckles point toward the target.
Sun aimed his left hand at Akihiko's chest. "You fool!" shouted Akihiko. He spun his body
toward the right, switching his katana, taking it with his left hand, and doved under Sun.
Sun's body flipped in the air until he hit the ground on his backside. Akihiko stood straight,
twirling his katana above his head before stabbing down toward Sun's temple.
Mingyu placed her left hand on the ground, using it as a leverage to lift both her feet
up to kick Akihiko's katana away. Instead, the katana stabbed the ground, just inches away
from Sun's head. Akihiko took a brief moment to free his blade. Mingyu and Sun recovered to
their feet. Mingyu growled and shouted..."You could've killed him!"
Akihiko grew tired of this.
"Am I suppose to just sit back and wait for either of you two to kill me? Maybe your
people needed to be locked away. If you search for me, I won't hesitate to kill you!"
Suddenly, Akihiko turned away and ran deep into the forest.
"Akihiko!" shouted Mingyu as she dashed after him...but she was too late.
She sighed.
Sun felt responsible and approached Mingyu..."I-I'm sorry...I just thought..."
Mingyu turned around and screamed..."You thought what?! You was careless! Now there
is only three of us! What are we going to do now?! Huh?! I'm going to bed."
Mingyu turned and stomped away, Sun was left standing there...he didnt know what to do
or what to say. Mingyu took one last look at Sun and sighed before she entered her tent.
Sun just stood there...
James, who was surprisingly asleep throughout the whole commotion, left his tent and
went to stretch by Sun. "Is everything alright, Sun?" James asked.
Sun slowly turned to James..."Not right now."
Sun walked back to his tent and James was left there pondering.

After the little sprawl that happened the night before, Sun, Mingyu,
and James were walking along a deep road heading toward
the next rundown village. What they wasn't aware of, was a British
control checkpoint, half way along the path. The entire party was
quiet...Sun knew Mingyu was still disappointed. She hasn't spoken
to him throughout the entire travel. Everytime he would look at her,
Mingyu would look away. James still asked a lot of questions.
Mingyu suddenly stretched her arm infront of Sun and James, signalling
them to stop.

"Wait!" said Mingyu. "There is something up ahead. Follow me."

Mingyu took off toward the right, ducking behind a tall bush. The rest
followed. Looking up and over the bush, they noticed that there
was a huge road block infront of them. James, who was out of breath
at the time, stumbled over with his heavy backsack. A few leaves got
caught into his hair.

"Whats going on?" he asked. "They must be surveying the area for
radicals. Bertrand sent the call to eliminate anyone who looks uncertain."
replied Mingyu.

Sun turned to Mingyu..."...What are we going to do?"

"Something that should've been done a long time ago." whispered
a stranger who appeared behind them. The stranger, along with two
other accomplices bashed the party with the end of their rifles.
They fell unconcious.
"Take them to the checkpoint." said the voice.

A few hours later, James was the first to open his eyes. He noticed
a tall figure standing over him...his brother...Johnathan Auldwen.
Johnathan was a high ranking British officer. He was stationed just
outside the borders of Japan a few years ago...what is he doing here?

"One question...why do you travel with two chinese? Do they even have
release forms?" asked Johnathan.

"W-What...? What are you doing here?" replied James.

"Eh, our commanding officer needed us to maintain this roadblock.
It's a lot of blah blah, but that still leaves my question. Why are
you travelling with chinese?"

James gulped...He knew that if he told his brother the truth, Sun
and Mingyu would be killed.
"Bertrand hired them...to...to escort me to Kaedja." said James.

"Bertrand you say?" Johnathan replied. "Now why would a brilliant man
of his stature want to see you get to Kaedja? Did you have business
with him?" he asked.

"W-Well..." James couldn't make up any more lies. He wasn't good when
it came to lying.

"Ah HA! So they are illegal!" Johnathan started laughing before turning
to one of his men. "Execute them."

"Yes sir!" Both men pointed their rifles at the unconcious Sun and Mingyu.

Just when they was about to fire...James sprawled up and shouted "Wait!"

Johnathan and his men turned to hear what James had to say.

"...If you kill them...I will kill myself..."

Johnathan paused for a bit before bursting out laughing.
"Oh this is fun!" said Johnathan before pulling his pistol from
his jacket, turning toward Mingyu and shot a bullet at her lower
left calf muscle.
"NO!!!" screamed James.

Mingyu almost instantly screamed in complete anguish, grabbing at
the wound. It hurt her so bad...she didn't even know what was going
on at that moment. Her body rocked back and forth as she continued to
gasp and yelp in pain.

Johnathan aimed his gun at Sun. This time, he was aiming for a death
blow to the head. He pulled the trigger. James shot up from the bed
and grabbed at Johnathan's arm. The bullet instead hit the wall.
The two brothers both wrestled with each other. The two other british
soldiers pointed their rifles at James...but they stopped by their
commanding officer.
"No you fools! Do not hurt my brother!" Johnathan shouted.

Mingyu's body started shivering...her blood pouring from her leg
rapidly...

"KILL THE CHINESE! THEY HAVE NO RELEASE FORM! KILL THEM RIGHT BLOODY
NOW!!!" screamed Johnathan while keeping his pistol away from James.

The two british soldiers pointed their rifles at Sun and Mingyu once again...

Suddenly, a silent sweep dismembered their arms from their bodies.
Both rifles fell on the floor before them, their arms still attached
to them. James turned to the side and saw Akihiko standing there with
a blood dripping katana.
"Looks like I came just in time." Akihiko said with a smirk.

Yah! I think Mingyu is in quite a unfavorable position, but nothing Sun probably won't put himself in the way for! smile.gif Though I wonder what it will spell for her? And will Akihiko stay? What will happen to Jonathan? Stay tuned for the next installment of Dragon Ball...I mean, Rise of Tongzi!

I miss those epic DBZ moments lol.

Eh, that probably will be the last short story I post...I'm afraid if I post anymore the game will ruin all of the plot twists, the surprises, the sad moments, the resistance moments and whatnot. Trust me, the game will be deep and I aim to make every person here on RRR cry through the entire game.
