You read correctly, n00b John is make music. This seems too minuscule over here. Lemme make a better title.

JOHN COYNE IS MAKE MUSICS YAY.

(not much better, but you get it)

My work:

Non Abscessus- An orchestral piece I made for Albino Parakeet. Non Abcessus means "no withdraw" (or something like that) in Latin. I used Latin because I'm a pretentious bitch who takes himself too seriously. It's supposed to illustrate a bloody stalemate in which generals are not withdrawing their troops. ENJOY.

I'm gonna put things up there as I finish them for people. Just so ya' know what I do and how I do eet.

SO REQUEST ANYTHING. My software (Mixcraft) covers a wide area of music, with tons of effects and such.

SO SHOOT. Give me some ideas.

Why not?

-Damn, I need a forum signature now, don't I?

You could always make a jazzy tune about flying insects and name it 'Yellow Jackets', lol.

Generally speaking, musicians make better music when they are making music from a genre they enjoy listening to; you should post up your interests to make it easier for us to give you proper suggestions.

Forum signatures aren't a requirement, but they can be useful and/or entertaining. =P

My dream job is to write scores for video games and movies, so I figure that the standard RPG type music is appropriate here. The bees thing is pretty nice, to be honest, I have some good ideas for it.

I would like to set up a request, if you don't mind.
I want a lengthy, epic piece about a bloody stalemate between two vast armies. The emotions expressed should be anger, sadness, desperation, solemnity. I want it to be loud, encumbering, yet compelling and daring. It must have a variety of instruments, all with booming voices and notes. They must merge and create the war-like atmosphere, in which it is a bloody stalemate as stated.

Please.

Okay dokay, been kinda busy, but I will get to these.

And Edit, do you want that to be a loop, Parakeet?

No, a loop would not be acceptable. It must have a satisfying and intense ending, perhaps one of sorrow for they fight eachother through this stalemate until the last of eachothers' men die.

My music isn't Winifred Phillips (Who composed the soundtrack for God of War) or Tim Burton ready, but I have come far enough to give a few tips. Creating a true epic piece requires A LOT of instruments and melodies that rings off of each other well. That doesn't mean pile a bunch of instruments ontop of each other cause then it'll sound too cluttered. What I would usually do is break a piece into sections.

For instance, I may start the piece off with a Timpani roll that leads up to a cymbal crash in the first two measures. In the third measure I may add two or three instruments containing maybe a: Harp, Strings, and a French Horn. The strings will feed the listener the main atmosphere of the piece whether it be dark, mellow, village-like, etc. The harp is there to give it some flavor. And the french horn usually points the piece in the direction of the next four measures or so. After that, take out a instrument (if it starts to sound to cluttered) or add a instrument (if it sounds too empty)

One tip a friend of mine has given me was to NEVER NEVER use base hits or snares in hip-hop or pop fashion.

This is a huge no-no
Base hit = BH
Snare = S

BH, BH, S, BH, BH, S, BH, BH, S

When dealing with epic rpg pieces, for the snare, you would want to incorporate a snare roll, leading up to a four snare beat. For instance:

Snare roll = SR
Snare = S

SR, S, S, S, S -- S, S, S, S -- S, S, S, SR etc.

Personally, I wouldn't recommend base hits unless they are timpani rolls with a low volume.

If you want, you can download the VSTi entitled Edirol Orchestra. It gives you everything you need right there. For a truly epic piece, you are looking at sixteen instruments dealing with string selections, woods, keys & perc etc.
If you want you can check out my music topic to sorta get the feel of what I'm talking about. The pieces there are a bit old, before my friend shedded his music wisdom on me, but it may give you some inspiration.

Yeah, thanks for the advice! I'm actually using a lot of snare rolls in this piece, to kind of emphasize the military aspect of it. I'm using some pretty, er, daring chord changes (Gmin->Bmin).

I'm also using quite a bit of brass and timpani for a really booming kind of feel, followed by some bars of a flowing flute and harp feature to emphasize the melancholic feel of the piece. I think a french horn part would actually fit in very nicely there, thanks for the tips.

Bmin to Dmaj to Amaj! Those chords sound awesome.
But don't put that in the song. Unless you want to. I was just stating something.

A war scene. Basically my first post describes the scene. It's a bloody stalemate between two vast armies. People are dying, soldiers' wills are breaking, generals are refusing to withdraw from combat, lots of shit.

lol

this thread is quite stupid really.

i mean sure offer to make music thats great - i just doubt the validity of the "advice" offered.

You can stick to pedestrian ideals and make pedestrian music -

then we can file it away with all the other music that sounds pedestrian and samey and merge it all together into one easily forgotten memory.

Or you can be creative.

and Make some actual music -

I recommend a program called Reason - its really rather good -

oh and mr albino

I'm not looking for a song. I'm asking for one to be made.
Your so called 'Innocence' didn't match what I wanted at all. I want real orchestral instruments, not electronic shit.

Are you expecting JohnCoyne to actually record a live orchestra playing music he has composed?

If so, I love you.

I have to admit, some of that advice was a bit too specific, but the bit about including french horn and harp actually changed my piece a lot, a part of it is based around the french horn and harp.
