I'm sure I'm missing something here. Basically I want to have the enemies appear onscreen and walk around. When the actor touches the event, the battle starts, and then I want to have the monster respawn if the player gets far enough away or if he/she leaves and reenters the area.
I got the event set up with random movement and set to player touch, and I have it set to a self switch when the player wins. But the switch stays on, so the monster doesn't respawn even when the player leaves the area.
Don't use any switches my friend if you want the enemy to respawn when you return to the map. Simple set it to battle you when it bumps into you then add whatever special effects once you defeat enemy then use the erase event command. The enemy is deleted from the map but if you return to the map the enemy will be there again or if you save and load the map the enemy will be thier again. This is a quick way to do it...

Please note, you'll have to create a Monster X and Y coordinate thing for each Enemy. Perhaps it's easier the way obsorber do it, although I've had no recollection about Erase Event un-erasing the even once you leave the map...
