If you've not watched all of series 4 and all of the specials then please don't read any further, this topic is mainly focused on things to come within series 5. I thank you smile.gif

Okay the new writer, this is what's going to make this series the best ever, if you've enjoyed "The Empty Child" "The Doctor Dances" "The Girl in the Fireplace" "Blink" "Time Crash" "Silence in the Library", "Forest of the Dead" then the stories are going to be brilliant, Steven Moffat has wrote some brilliant episodes already and has some great ideas. It won't be the same as before because it's going to be like it used to be.

I personally can't wait for the new tardis design, I've heard that there's been some random offshot corridors made so we're finally going to see things outside of the console room again smile.gif He's even brought back William Hartnells Tardis design, what's not to love about that,
[Show/Hide] Tardis designs
New

Old

Yes it's not going to be the same as Tennant but that's what Doctor Who is about, you're never truly British until you grow to love a doctor and see them go.

Ah Tom Baker... it's never been the same without you QQ

In my opinion, the new writer seems like he is going to be better. I thought the episodes he's written so far for the series' previous were excellent, but that new TARDIS does not fit the part! This object has travelled through time, space, even dimensions. It has fought in wars, saved the lives of thousands and assisted the inevitable killing of just as much. It should not be a shiny, plastic-looking, bright blue box. huh.gif It just seems to fake to me. As you can see in the older picture above, the older fits the part much better tongue.gif

I agree, the episodes were pretty good that the writer wrote, the "Forest of the Dead" and "Blink" I quite enjoyed.
It's just the new guy that I am not fond of.
He looks like he has no 'adventure' experiance at all.

Also, I am saddened about Catherine Tate not returning.
She was brilliant.

The Tardis looks to clean and fresh.
But the overall design is retro.

I have seen more than one Doctor come and go sweat.gif

Tennant was one of the best, edgy and eccentric.

As to how the new guy fits in - hmm I will have to wait and see.

The episodes by Moffatt were creepy and Blink really gave me the creeps. however Dr Who, to me needs that element of the ridiculous as well. Aliens that look like they are made of plastic and Daleks of course.

I think the old Tardis is better, not for nostalgic reasons, but because it has travelled through time for ever and should be battered and bruised and look as if it has history. In fact they should have replaced it with a different type of time machine rather than a new police box.

Even Tom Baker though went back to resize his Tardis and get the Dimensions corrected (Appeared over the top of an old Poilce box), so I guess that's how they can get away with the clean look, then again something the master used to do all the time (When he used to be creepy) was have a different shaped Tardis -Grandfather clock was brilliant as you'd seen it most of the episode and never realised.

I'd like to see it fully working again, the chameleon circuit, the things they could do now.
[Show/Hide] Oh this is one of the masters Tardis:

Matt Smith does seem more of a guys doctor, not the everyone loves the look of him like Tennant was. Mind you though it was a shame to see him go, especially the way the episode was done, I didn't like it one bit. Then right at the end they just broke his character, all that time of him being "I'm always fine" shattered by making him say that last line.

Moffat I think he's doing a story with the older style Daleks aswel, so that's something else to look forward to, plus the new assistant wub.gif

I agree, Tennant was one of the guys at the top of the list, not because he was the latest, but because he put so much emotion into the character. Although, i have to say, he did have some excellent scripting to work with tongue.gif

And yes. The new tardis is WAY to clean...

I think the new doctor is getting a bit too much stick.
I remember watching the changeover from Christopher Eccleston to David tenant and vowing to never watch doctor who again.
And that was one series of Doctor Who.
However, David has been in it for 4 series, and that's why no one wants the new guy.

Now no one can deny it, David was bloody brilliant, but they couldn't keep him forever, it would stop being Doctor Who if they did.

I say role on in the new guy, if they were smart enough to get it right ten times, I'm sure the eleventh will be fine. thumbsup.gif

REGENERATION!

So did anyone catch the new episode?

It wasn't as bad as I thought it would be, but it was still bad.

Honestly, to much special effects usage, it looks like a children's version of CSI or Cold Case.

The future episode locations look kind of cool though.
A World War 2 one and a castle looking place.

Anyway, I wont rip on it too much more, still like 12 more episodes.

Yea i saw it! I actually thought it was really good, a lot better than i thought it would be. The character development was although sudden, in keeping with the tradition of the introduction of the new characters. Also, the young girl's character was portrayed very well. She had a good script to work with and acted her character well in cooperation with how the story progressed and how the doctor was introduced. I especially thought the music and camera angles had improved, fitting with scenes a lot better, and creating a more dramatic effect. Also the beginning had been changed, i liked it, gave it a more ski-fi effect tongue.gif

I did - and I made my mind up to give it a chance but oh no- Matt Smith is a dreadfull actor- all the hype about him and yet he failed to deliver.
The new assistant worked well I kind off liked her character.

The Tardis all new and sparkly - no no - leave it as it was cranky and prone to breaking down. The special effects - nothing much to shout home about either.

So for the moment the jury is out let's see what next week brings.

awww, I don't think you're being very fair at all.
Matt Smith definitely has the energy, and potential, and I can see him being a fantastic new doctor.
In the first ten minutes we got to see the crazy, zany and brilliant fun side to the doctor - however, in the finale of the episode we saw Matt battle it out with a giant eye. During this verbal battle, Matt demands the eye to show if the planet is defended, and we get to see if it is.
David Tenant appears last in a chain, and Matt steps through.
"Hello, I'm the Doctor"
*eye flies away quicker than jesus on ecstasy*

And David Tenant's opening act?
Sycorax, steps out of his Tardis and sword fights, etc. Then he is all 'spread the word! This planet is protected!"
And the sycorax fly away quicker than jesus.... Then get killed by Harold Saxon, AKA Master.

So, all in all, they both entered very oddly, but we forgive David, why not Matt?

As for the Tardis and special effects, I personally loved them.
The tardis has been getting shinier with every season, and the special effects have been getting sharper too.

I like the new look, and I'm giving Matt Smith a try.
Compared with Tenant's first series, Smith's is looking much better.
The sets look beautiful, the stories look spine tingling and the overall feel seems much more epic.

Oh and side note, in the preview for the next episode, did you guys see the cyberman with one arm?! That looked awesome.

To be honest, i really didn't like that scene, was too corny and the cheesy sort of doctor who. I think they need to move away from that scene, like they did in the rest of the episode, and the episodes to come. Or what it looks like anyway tongue.gif
Also the effect, there weren't that many if i remember correctly (apart from the eyes) which were good, but the scene with the crashing Tardis was a bit gittery, not as good as it could have been i think :/

you don't know dramatic face offs unless you've seen good old .... olden day doctor who.

And keep in mind, it is a show for all audiences, including kids. If you want to take away the glitter and the dramatic face offs, watch torchwood, which is better anyway.

Actually, it was Hariet Jones, Prime Minister, who sent the torchwood team to obliterate the ship. ("Don't you think she looks tired?")

Execpt for that internet p*** reference when the doctor stole Jeff's Laptop. tongue.gif Also, isn't Torchwood done? Didn't they do that 5-part series finale (The Children of Earth, or something), or are they coming back?

But I digress. I'm definitely going to miss David Tennant, especially since they took anything that would have reminded me of the good times that were had with him (everywhere from the intro to the inside of the Tardis). I have to agree with kaz that Matt Smith isn't a great actor, but I will give him some credit. He's got potential and energy, but I don't think he's good enough to follow David Tennant...

Also, does anyone else find it annoying when Matt Smith yells, "Geronimo," or is it just me. I'll admit that "Allons-y" was getting old (and used at times that really didn't work), but couldn't they use something a little more... unique? Anyway, we'll have to see where this new series is going,
[Show/Hide] or I could ramble on about how I won't miss Matt Smith when he leaves (just kidding)...
(I'm probably mostly ranting, so don't take any of this too seriously. This is just how I feel)
((Also, spoilers if you haven't seen the new series))
There's a lot that bothers me about the new series. Matt Smith doesn't dress in any way that looks like he's out on an adventure.... The inside of the Tardis repaired itself for whatever reason, as well as redecorated, but it looks too shiny and new; it doesn't leave any feeling of nostalgia, or any feeling of wonderment about the doctor or the tardis.

When Christopher Eccleston regenerated, I really didn't think much of it. It's not that he was bad or anything (I don't think he can do cheerful too well in my opinion), but I figured that the first season was just to introduce the idea of doctor who to new viewers, and reintroduce just about every key aspect they could from the old series, from the Tardis to Regeneration. When David regenerated on the other hand, he seemed so emo and depressed; I actually thought "shut up and regenerate, this is way out of character" (Plus, why did he "die" from the radiation when he could've absorbed it like before and kicked it into his shoe?).

David Tennants first appearance was really well done. It wasn't flashy, and you were still wondering what was going on and what would happen (plus, it made for an awesome christmas special). But when it was David's turn to leave, it felt like most of it was filler, then he walked into the tardis and exploded like the kid in Charley and the Chocolate factory should have. I still don't know why the tardis even caught fire in the first place...

As for the partners, I'm not sure how they're going to go about this, and I'm definitely going to miss Donna (she and David worked so well together), even if she is annoying at times (but that's just part of her charm). This new partner doesn't seem that bad, so I'll give her a chance. But I will say this: If the doctor promises on several occasions that he'll be back before they know it, and then shows up years later, why would she hope in to the tardis the day before her wedding?

I hope the opening isn't going to be like that forever, either. It's not that it's bad, but I just think the music strays too far from not only the original song, but the overall feel of Doctor Who. Also, the time vortex doesn't really look like the time vortex anymore, but that might just be me being picky.

Although I'll miss David, I'm going to give Matt Smith a chance, partly because the first episode usually sucks compared to the rest of the show, and also because that's just part of the show. Whenever they have a new doctor, it becomes a brand new show, but doesn't lose its plot. I've seen some of the very first season (if anyone else has seen some of those episodes, does anyone remember the caveman trying to make fire? That was the funniest thing I ever saw), and parts of the 3rd and 4th season (I might have to download them, or I may never truly enjoy the classics). It's a different writer, new season, and I think I'm just being upset that they're changing things so much. Matt Smith isn't god awful, but he's no David Tennant; which is exactly what it is: It's a new person, new personality, so I'll get used to it. Even if he was an atrocious actor, it'll only distract from the story so much, which I'm hoping will continue to be great.
so here's hoping for a great season 5
[Show/Hide] minispoiler
Also, was anyone else disappointed when they brought back the Timelords, only to have them sent back to oblivion forever, along with the master? I guess it'd take away from some of the adventure to have the Doctor returning to Gallifrey once in a while, but I thought it'd be so interesting having the Master fight the Doctor again. Anyone else hoping he finds a way out of the time lock?

I don't really care much for the time lords, but did you hear what David was talking about before he put them back in there?
'nightmare child'
'could-of-been-king and his army of never-weres'

I think they've pretty much tied every loose end so that there is no way of any of Russel T Davies characters returning.
Which, to be honest it pretty lame, that means no Lee Evans or that girl from Eastenders.

I'm gonna miss Donna, she's the reason I began watching it. biggrin.gif
I mean, Donna will die if she remembers anything, which is on the verge of bull to be honest.
I have no idea what Mickey and Martha are doing.
Rose is thankfully trapped, despite making a come back almost every series before now. I hate her.

I have watched the series since you were all a "glint in your father's eye", so have watched the series "grow" so to speak.

I have watched nearly all of the Doctor's incarnations so am used to them changing. I never gelled with Chris Eccleston, Peter Davison was pretty good. Sylvestor Mccoy was just manic.

Matt Smith is such a dead pan actor, he wasn't believeable. Will wait till next week's episode and see if there is any great character development.

There is another series of Torchwood

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Torchwood_episodes

I wonder if there will be any crossover episodes?

I'v never really connected with torchwood to be honest, i always thought the characters weren't very believable and the storyline's seemed like they just happened, out of the blue. But i suppose it was probably because i didn't watch many episodes and it is the same with doctor who.

i completely agree! Infact i hated the whole allons-y thing as well! I hate it when they try to link cheesy catchphrases with the different actors. It doesn't work, and it just gets annoying. tongue.gif

anyone watch it then?

I don't know what everyone else thinks, parts of it were a bit rushed, but considering it was an hour long it was definitely one of their most well thought out storylines.

It had symbolism, plot twists, and that very badly hidden crack.

I watched it, thought it was pretty awesome.

The new doctor will probably grow on me soon enough.

Also, call me slow, but what was important about that crack? Or do we not know yet?
