Undeniably Sexy - A Thief's Tale

Often when I think of a humorous thief, I think something along the lines of Locke from Final Fantasy 6 or maybe even webcomic-wise via Nuklear Power's 8 Bit Theater. Even still, the thief is often looked at as a not too serious role in otherwise serious games. That's not to say they aren't skilled, but often they play the part of comic relief. Therefore, it's no surprise that that should also be the case in Undeniably Sexy, a game whose title still doesn't make a whole lot of sense.

The game starts off interestingly enough with a sort of bard's tale, all in rhyme, as an intro. Poor Chad gets locked up rather quickly and through a series of weird events, makes an escape into the night being blamed for several vicious murders. Fairly quickly you're reminded in the art of thievery as well as sleeping powder, the ability to use throwing stars, etc.

What's also interesting is you can steal while in the field as well, though it doesn't make a whole lot of sense. Instead of simply approaching someone from behind and using the action button, instead you have to "distract" them by talking to them normally, THEN within a few seconds use the action button on their back. It doesn't work on everyone and it's a pretty strange and convoluted system to start with, but like I said, interesting all the same.

What's also interesting is the ability to actually beef up your skills by using them. As you steal, you become better at stealing. As you use sleeping powder, you become better at "poisoning." I'm not sure if that means that eventually you get different powders or what later on, but it's an interesting system all the same. Magic is also available in the game via using your MP along with base ingredients.

And yes, magic skills increase as well. I didn't get very far in the game, most likely because save points aren't exactly plentiful. Now, there is an ability to camp, which allows for full recovery and an immediate save, but the problem there is often that breaks the tent. Most of the music is standard RTP faire, which wouldn't be that big of a deal, but you can tell the author clearly put a lot of talent into getting different tilesets, charsets, and so on, so it would've been nice if most of the music had followed suit.

The author also decided on a sideview system for XP similar to FF6, except without the CTB. This makes for better animations, but on the whole, a lot of the animations are very meh. The dialogue, characters, and story in the game are all pretty great. For that alone, I would definitely recommend playing this title. Unfortunately as I said before, I didn't get that far because of the savepoint issue, but I was impressed with what I was able to experience.

Conclusion

The Good

- Interesting skill development system.
- Good mapping, varied tilesets.
- Hilarious dialogue, characters, and story overall.

The Bad

- Stealing doesn't make a whole lot of sense. It's still interesting, but yeah.
- The generic RTP music starts to wear on you pretty quick, especially if you're an author as well.
- I hate to whine about savepoints, but in a game with labyrinth-like dungeons, it's helpful to have them plentiful.

And The...Sexy

If you're already beaten Sore Losers, a rather excellent game I also reviewed, and you want something funny to play, definitely check this out. Undeniably Sexy doesn't quite live up to its title, but it's definitely fun and funny in small doses.

Verdict: 8.0

Oh, and why do you post quotes in your signature? When I see that I can't help but think the person believes it to be meaningful and life changing... It's pretty cheesy to me.

It's funny. I'm in the process of changing up the music as I speak. It's an Ultima Online fan game after all and there's a ton of Ultima music out there to sample. The first thing to go was the battle BGM. It's my game, I don't play any RMXP games, and even I'm tired of it. Additional save points shouldn't be a problem. (And yeah, I agree. Stealing doesn't really make sense.)

How far did you get?

I'm wondering if anyone else reading this got any further. It definitely builds, especially in Act II. This was my first RPG maker game and I started it over 3 years ago so I was learning while I was making it. (And it still has a bare minimum of scripts.)

Thanks for the review.

Oh, awesome! Honestly, I only got as far as the first cave. tongue.gif The game is hilarious and fun, though. I can definitely update the review once you add new stuff if you'd like.
