Well, thanks for your feedback Obsorber. Of course I accept that not everyone will like the game. I was actually trying to emulate the style of the Fatal Frame/Project Zero series and other horror games, running around and collecting items/clues is basically the most important mechanic of a survival horror game. Some people do not enjoy these games, but that is exactly what The Beyond is intended to be. I wasn't trying to make an action based game, I wanted players to walk around the house and feel scared and alone.
Sorry about the battle system. I admit it was a little tacked on; I quickly made it up after my Resident Evil shooting system script stopped working. I originally intended there to be many more enemies and shooting/melee style ABS combat.
I'm glad you liked the story and "felt" the atmopshere, but I'm disapointed to hear my scares had no effect on you. Oh well, depends on whoever's playing. As you said, you don't scare easily (niether do I, so I can understand the way you feel) but for most people it's had a great effect. I'm glad with what I've achieved, after all, I only made this in a single month.

@Skurge:

Use the Music Notes on the piano, then when inside the library, you can open the office door with the Revolver.

Dark Gaia, I never said I didn't like the game infact I think it's one of the best amateur games on RRR.
This game is probably the best horror game I've played on this site so good job and I am very very
proud of you for managing to pull it off in only a month. Well done. (Well it's out of this and Eclipse which
I reckon with a few changes could be as good as this game.)

The only thing I wanted to say was the fact that it wasn't as scary as I was expecting. If I was to review
this game for what it's meant to do(scare the player and look for information and clues) then I would rate
it 7/10.

The game had a dark sense and feeling and I like that about it. And your right, some people would have
loved the way you had to fight your enemies. I would have probably given you a review of 8 if you could
use weapons like guns and bats instead but like I said I can't properly review it as that is more of an
opinion seeing as you've already got some decent feedback.

Ok I may have sounded harsh there but, I did like your game, it's just I'm so busy, also with my own project
I don't have time to play it all fully so most games even if they are good I give up when I die. dry.gif

Ah, so I misunderstood you...

Thanks for your comments, and I do hope you try the upcoming One Night 3, I'm working very hard on it to become a lengthy, fun to play and overall extremely scary game. Hopefully it'll scare you a bit more than this did.

Update

The site hosting my uploads (RPGMaker.net) overhauled their site URLs today so the links I had posted previously died. I have now updated them. Sorry for any inconvenience.

Friday, 4th June, 2010

As of this moment (8:38 PM AEST) I have uploaded a new version of The Beyond to celebrate the first anniversary of its release. This new version contains the entire Special Edition version of the game plus a new Expansion Pack which adds new locations, gameplay, puzzles and scares, all up making this the ultimate version of the game and worthy enough to be played even if you've clocked The Beyond before.

Snap it up when it's fully uploaded and approved on RMN... Should be by this time tomorrow.

Hi...

I am playing "The Beyond" and I have a question...

I found the Business Card in the secret underground chamber and figured out the solution to the problem. Thing is... I have no idea what to do with this. I checked the readme and discovered that this is the combination for some kind of lock. So... I spent about three hours wandering randomly about the mansion looking for this XY lock. Where is it? It's driving me up the wall.

Also, in future horror games of your devising, don't make the PC stop moving (or cause the player to otherwise lose control of them) when one of the "scare beasties" pops out of the woodwork. It makes things a little more shocking, I should think.

Thanks. Good game, by the way.

The lock for the business card puzzle is in the room where you found the business card itself; in the northern part of the room there's a door over an old bridge that goes over a crevasse and the locked drawer is beyond this door.

Thank you for your assistance. The part that was driving me crazy was that I swore I had found that room outside of the... erm.... "area"

At any rate, I suppose it's a little too late to review The Beyond, since it's already been done by others far better at that than I. Like I said before, nice game, though I've taken a look at One Night 3 and I think it's the best of the lot (which is good, since one's game making skills should ideally get better with practise).

So yeah.... Keep up the good work.

I guess I shouldn't be surprised. This is a great game. I just needed a diversion and DL'd and played. I'm not done yet (Oh no) but I love it. You've captured all the things I tried to a few years ago. Since I've never said it before, I'll say it now. Great job! And I'll post again when I'm done. (With little bit's and pieces of playtime scattered through out my weeks, it may take a bit though). But I love it!

Thanks a lot for your comments Man! Incidentally, your efforts with LuL were the main inspiration for the original One Night game; it was actually the first RPG Maker game that scared me.

Hey everyone, I've had a few complaints about RMN being down a fair bit and downloads being inaccessible, so I've added an extra download mirror (FileFront) for One Night 2.

Hahaha, hi guys,

I'm glad you've found the game scary. That means it's working as a horror game. Enjoy!
