Before I even start writing the tutorial I'm going to flat out tell you that no images are included in this tutorial, I mean after all I'm just giving away information.
What you need to know
- Charsets - Pictures - RGSS/2 "Yes, scripting can be used to enhance mapping, I won't go over this though" - RMVXs tileset setup
What's needed
- Wora's Charset Pixel Script "For placing charsets/objects at certain X/Y on a map"
================================================================================ ==================
Let's start off with the tile setup, as you probably guessed VXs auto-tiles are pretty blockish, but it's easier to actually manually place the tiles rather than using an auto-tile, basically all that's needed in a RMVX tilset is this. Grass, Dirt"No auto tiles", Shadows, bits of the mountain tiles. Houses are optional, but it's best to split them up into 32X32 tiles and used in charsets rather than a tileset.
Now I'm assuming you have all your houses, trees, the top of your mountain tiles objects in charsets. While none of that is really necessary it actually is, by default VX is a very blockish mapping system, but with the use of charsets/pictures it no longer has to be. If you think about it only environment tiles are really in a set, everything else is objects, trees and houses are objects they are not tiles.
================================================================================ ==================
Now that you have that all setup let's start by actually mapping, first off just place your land tiles on the map and place any water tiles if needed, please use charsets for roundings, it'll look less blockish. Ok, so you got your land tiles setup, now be creative and add rocks, pebles, flowers to make the map more attractive and even add lighting if it's needed. If a house is wanted please use woras script and setup the house, it might not be needed if you split them up into 32X32 tiles. After all the pretty things are added just add the final touchings and just add the trees and shadows to the map, mountains are very easy to map just be creative with it, you can use vx for the bottom to mid of the mountain but it's necessary to add the top of them as charsets, it'd look less blockish and much more professional.

This might not be as helpful as a PICTURE based tutorial but it lets you be more creative, and picture tutorials only make you lazy.
