How did I learned to script
QUOTE
Hey pim! I'm the Law G14!

For the past couple of months I've been learning RGSS and I've got the basic stuff down such windows, variables, conditional statements, ect. But, I can't see myself making big scripts such as a jumping system or a side view battle system. I was wondering how you learned to script because I really want to know how to script really well.

Thanks in advance.

Hey there,

Well I don't make battle neither though I can still teach you some things :)...
The way I've learned to script is by reading other scripts for the most part.
I've allways been interested in other peoples work but this time I though I had to try to make something myself...and it worked!!
The most importand thing when you go scripting is (at least in my case) that you want to make something to help an other wich can't script.
You also need to feel the competition that's around in the scripting-community.
Cause, I have to say, if you get pushed to get a sertain request done before an other scripter does, you feel POWERFULL!! :P
So that's an other thing...
You also don't need to be afraid to learn from others or helpfiles.
When I write my scripts, I actualy always have the helpfiles open to look things up I don't know or remember.
Then, you must be calm, cause you need to try the script a lot of times.
When I write a script, I test it after almost every changes.
First I set up the major structure.
Like when I make a window-script or part of a script I start with something like this:
CODE
class Window_Name < Window_Base
def initialize(x,y,width,height)
super(x,y,width,height)
refresh
end

def refresh
self.contents.clear
draw_contents
end

def draw_contents
draw_something(with, some, parameters)
end

def update
refresh if @something != @what_it_should_be
end
end
So that's also very important.
Then, the biggest thing I learned scripting from is TRIAL AND ERROR.
That's the most irritating way to learn something, cause it's more ERROR than TRIAL, but it does the trick realy good.

So that's it how I did it.
Now it's up to you.
Do some requests (if I didn't do it allready :P) and learn from them.

Hope that helped you out a little.
If not, keep your eye on the Scriptology-topic (see my sig) where I'll be updating for my scripting(video)tutorials.
Perhaps they're going to be usefull for you one day ;)

EDIT: N\m about the gold part. Now that I can see it, would it be possible for you to separate the Health, Mana, and the Exp. Bars and place them on the right side of the screen away from the Face and name? And could you move the gold icon and readout to the bottom left? So far, it looks great.

Sure I can smile.gif
Though I've a hard time figuring out how to go read the amount of enemies are on the map for the other request.
But yes,
I'll see what I can do wink.gif

Oh and for the gold thing, you could set the icon_id to "", then it'll be gone smile.gif

Hey viperfrost,

For the map thing, I suggest you use woratana's minimap script.
Though for it, I could make an add-on.
Tell me what ya think.

Hello pim321!

What I need is a display where is shows the health bars/mp bars of ALL the current party members to the bottom right of the screen. I have attached a picture of about what I would like it to look like. Also, if possible, could you make it easily editable what colors all of the bars are? Thanks in advance for any and all who can get to doing this!

[Show/Hide] Here's what I pretty much want

Keep in mind that I would like all the colors to be editable, in case I change my mind about how they should look
The bottom Actor should be the 1st bar, and when a party member is added, they get one bar above him.

Oh! and almost forgot, I also need the ability to call script so that the entire display disappears when a scene is happening.

Hey,

Good you like it.
The color of the bars depends on the Hp/Mp colors from the system.
Those can be changes (along with the bars in the status and menu windows) by changing the Window picture.
The colors of the whole system are located on the bottom left.

Hope you'll get it.

would you be able to make a hud that shows the HP, MP, Exp but also a picture that depands on a variable or switch to help explain i want this picture to show what season it is on the game and this changes roughly evey 30 game day the time system i've done but i cant get it to display the picture next to the HUD i'm using from the requiem battle system ( i know how to replace to HUD in that battle system so a stand alone HUD would be best) i hope i've been clear on what i would like

Many Thanks

Heya,

Sure I can do this.
So if I'm correct you want the next items:
  • Hp;
  • Mp;
  • Exp;
  • A picture (based on a variable).

Hope it's going to work.

Heya,

I hope the HUD you want is allready here, els I'll mod one for ya wink.gif
For the HUD ya're talking about I'm not sure if it has a call script thing allready.
If it has, go in the script and set the start display to 'false' so that the HUD doens't show on startup automaticly.
Now for the way to put it on, just go and set a event with a 'call script' wich has the following code
CODE
#to toggle the hud, say:
hud

#to set the hud 'on' (true) or 'off' (false), say:
hud(true)
   #or
hud(false)

Hope it works wink.gif

When I write my scripts, I actualy always have the helpfiles open to look things up I don't know or remember.
Then, you must be calm, cause you need to try the script a lot of times.
When I write a script, I test it after almost every changes.
First I set up the major structure.
Like when I make a window-script or part of a script I start with something like this:
CODE
class Window_Name < Window_Base
def initialize(x,y,width,height)
super(x,y,width,height)
refresh
end

def refresh
self.contents.clear
draw_contents
end

def draw_contents
draw_something(with, some, parameters)
end

def update
refresh if @something != @what_it_should_be
end

Greatzz,
SojaBird.

It says syntax error occured
heres what i did,

i copied your code
made a event
in the event i pressed the button "Script" and i paste your code in
than i run my game and when it comes to where its supposed to show up it says syntax error occured

Please help me

Heya,

Perhaps you can post wich HUD ya're using, as well as what your script-box in the event says.
Anyway, what should be there must be:
hud
or
hud(true)

That's all.

Hope it helped ya out.

Greatzz,
SojaBird.

Hi,here's a picture(very crappy,made in paint,may be confusing)
CODE

Just a question,the actor's picture,does it have to be the size the game has it at,or can you change it(to about the size in the picture)?

Thanks happy.gif
