Currently Working on 2 RPG Maker VX Projects. They are very unique, and have a different kind of style then the usual RPGs. So don't think of them as just another RPG. Did that sound rude? :D Not sure if I want them to go public yet, but we'll see how it goes.

How did I learned to script
QUOTE
Hey pim! I'm the Law G14!

For the past couple of months I've been learning RGSS and I've got the basic stuff down such windows, variables, conditional statements, ect. But, I can't see myself making big scripts such as a jumping system or a side view battle system. I was wondering how you learned to script because I really want to know how to script really well.

Thanks in advance.

Hey there,

Well I don't make battle neither though I can still teach you some things :)...
The way I've learned to script is by reading other scripts for the most part.
I've allways been interested in other peoples work but this time I though I had to try to make something myself...and it worked!!
The most importand thing when you go scripting is (at least in my case) that you want to make something to help an other wich can't script.
You also need to feel the competition that's around in the scripting-community.
Cause, I have to say, if you get pushed to get a sertain request done before an other scripter does, you feel POWERFULL!! :P
So that's an other thing...
You also don't need to be afraid to learn from others or helpfiles.
When I write my scripts, I actualy always have the helpfiles open to look things up I don't know or remember.
Then, you must be calm, cause you need to try the script a lot of times.
When I write a script, I test it after almost every changes.
First I set up the major structure.
Like when I make a window-script or part of a script I start with something like this:
CODE
class Window_Name < Window_Base
def initialize(x,y,width,height)
super(x,y,width,height)
refresh
end

def refresh
self.contents.clear
draw_contents
end

def draw_contents
draw_something(with, some, parameters)
end

def update
refresh if @something != @what_it_should_be
end
end
So that's also very important.
Then, the biggest thing I learned scripting from is TRIAL AND ERROR.
That's the most irritating way to learn something, cause it's more ERROR than TRIAL, but it does the trick realy good.

So that's it how I did it.
Now it's up to you.
Do some requests (if I didn't do it allready :P) and learn from them.

Hope that helped you out a little.
If not, keep your eye on the Scriptology-topic (see my sig) where I'll be updating for my scripting(video)tutorials.
Perhaps they're going to be usefull for you one day ;)

Greatzz,

Heya,

Sorry that you have to wait.
Though it's that I'm really bussy with a lots of things right now.
So perhaps I'll have to stop some things (my regular scripting sceme such as HUD's and all).
Anyway, thursday is my day off from school, so perhaps I'll start to do podcasts then.
Anyway, it'll take perhaps 3 weeks or so before I actualy dare to do it tongue.gif hehe

Hope to have your patient's just a little longer.

Greatzz and thanks for the (still) waiting,
SojaBird.

Hey there,

You know, I actualy dreamt today that I was teaching some young school childeren how to use RPG maker VX (though it didn't went that good since I couldn't see a lot, it was fuzzy and all tongue.gif ).
Anyway, besides that tongue.gif haha, yes there is a small update. I've been working on a new way of posting my news on the site. So that'll increase the workflow of it smile.gif
For the recording of the tutorials, I realy realy how to make one after I've posted the newest faction script.
Perhaps I'll do a quicke review over the script, though that'll be way too advanced so I'll perhaps just start with a tutorial wich will cover the basics.
I hope to do that at...let's say, perhaps 2morrow...not sure though but I'll try for you (and myself offcourse).

Thanks for reminding me, it realy does a lot to me to know that people still believe in me blush.gif

Greatzz,
SojaBird.

Heya all,

I'm still working on a better version of the site and the video player.
I'll be working on the videoplayer today.
I've also decided that I'll use the site for other things as scripts and all (uploaded Factions yesterday on the server).
So I'll also be doing that.

About the tutorials, I hope to make one next day if the video player is ready.
I feel that the time is good for making one now smile.gif

Greatzz and thanks,
SojaBird.

Heya,

Sure I can help you out smile.gif
All I've decided actualy is that I'm going to post them on the site and I'll link from the topic to there.
Also, what I ment with that I'd uploaded Factions to the scriptology-server, is that I placed the demo up there (as well as the pictures) so that I could update them with ease without having to changes the topic smile.gif
Though I haven't done that with the scripts yet since I want to make some more advanced update-code so that the topics here with my script update their versionnumber as well smile.gif

Hope that's enough.

Greatzz,
SojaBird.

PS. Oh btw, you can find the links to the files just in the topics in here wink.gif
So go check out the factions topic to find the link to the demo and script wink.gif

Enjoy biggrin.gif

This snippet basically inverts the dashing.. allowing you to dash only when 'disable dashing' is checked.
This way, normal maps disable dashing, but the ones you set to disable actually allow dashing..

It should be placed where you normally place the scripts ('above main', in the materials section of the scripts window)..

If you want to suggest a translation for something, PM me, and I'll take a look. I AM TRYING TO GIVE AWAY LOCKERZ.com INVITES, SO PLEASE LET ME KNOW IF YOU WANT ONE.
Currently Working on 2 RPG Maker VX Projects. They are very unique, and have a different kind of style then the usual RPGs. So don't think of them as just another RPG. Did that sound rude? :D Not sure if I want them to go public yet, but we'll see how it goes.
Need a script translated? Come talk to me, and I'll see what I can do.

Though the video's are very huge...so it suck's to upload them ect.
Anyway, it's cool biggrin.gif
So I've finished the tutorial on how to use New Menu Items script, but I liked it so much that I;/m going to record the first real scripting podcast 2morrow smile.gif

Anyone want to learn some special skills smile.gif?
Just write it down wink.gif
Perhaps how to use the HUD-script? Or simply some standard use of RGSS2?

Greatzz,
SojaBird.

CODE
class Window_Name < Window_Base
def initialize(x,y,width,height)
super(x,y,width,height)
refresh
end

def refresh
self.contents.clear
draw_contents
end

def draw_contents
draw_something(with, some, parameters)
end

def update
refresh if @something != @what_it_should_be
end

Hey,

Your're welcome.
Though I have to take a break cause I just got screwed by my ex-GF so I'm broken right now.
I can't script or do anything realy now.
I'm just in a mood that nothing is fun to do anymore and that I don't mind if I get hit by a car or a train.
My life just doesn't contain fun anymore at the moment.

So I'm sorry foks, but it's not going so well right now.
I do little scripting every day, but that's just 15 min. max and then I don't like it anymore.
I'm just haning around my pc but don't do that much.
I don't even care anymore to read my mail or post the forum as I use to do.
Before I just had to check the forum every day, but now...I don't mind anymore.

So that's my story for now.
Hope to get emotional better soon.
Thanks in advance for the support.

Gr. SB

(I don't even mind to close my post as I used to...)

Its great that the podcasting has finally begun and I'm very excited (it's been so long). I'm sorry about your GF issues and I hope you make a healthy and happy recovery soon Soja. Anyways, congrats on the success of the project so far and thanks to everyone who is involved for helping everyone become better scripters. Cheers! thumbsup.gif
