Good day,

I spent a number of hours trying to make a Circus tileset because I wanted one for my game. I have only made the tents, however, while everything else is from other RMXP default tilesets, like Grassland, Castle Town, Farm Village. For the front roof tile and the wall tiles, I used the one little tent stand thing from the Castle Town sileset as a reference. Otherwise, the sides of the roof, the corner things, and so forth, are completely custom made. I gained inspiration for how the pieces are set up from the houses in the Castle Town tileset.

So, finally, here it is! (This is for Critique only, not for use!)

Circus Tileset

I wasn't sure what other things I could have included in a Circus tileset... I've never been to a Circus before. Probably cages for animals. But most other things I think would have to be set up as events, like the animals and the circus performers and so on.

I'll eventually have to make an Interior, one for "Backstage" and one for "the ring" I suppose. I'll keep thinking on it!

Best Regards,
Amanda

It's a good start. You'll probably want to try and include other circus themes as well, food stands, colorful balls, clown sprites, but you are on the right track. If you're looking for a way to bring this to life for the player, in game you can always implement a few mini games where the player can earn some rewards.

The skin color tent doesn't really match the red and blue tent…
Also is a possible you could put it in game and take a screen shot? Just a watermark over to protect, of course
So far it's really good, I like it. Keep at it

All excellent ideas... and if I can, elephant sprites!! But I'm not that great of a spriter, so I'll just do what I can. Thanks for the suggestions! For the mini-games, those would typically require scripts, wouldn't they?

Yes, I thought the colors conflicted... I'll probably change the colors to the red and white combination, and have red and white be the main theme with the actual circus items.

Screenshot, I can do. Watermark, I have no idea how to do that... I can take a guess on how to implement it into the screenshot, but I've never done that before. I'll have to do that!

I'm making plans to add various things into the tileset now, as well as making multiple clown sprites if possible. Food stands, game stands, circus animals, balls, ladders, balloons, and other things like that. I'll need to make a balloon guy, too... if I can. XD

Thanks for the suggestions and the critiques!

Looks smooth. Do you need the black outlines on the horizontal parts of the tent canvases?

For circus inspiration watch Federico Fellini's movies, especially La Strada.

Chrono Trigger begins with a circus, you might do well to (re)visit it. Xenogears has a circus early on, too.

Sorry it took me so long to reply! The end of the semester got crazy, and now I'm being spoiled with my summer break!

I've become rather lazy.

Anyway! I have managed some clown sprites - blue haired, red haired, orange haired, and "original," though I've made a taller version of the clown, and then I've made another clown, which is a franken sprite. Think some poor unfortunate soul who got dragged into the clown business. lol

Here's the in-game show of it - I know, it's a really poorly designed map. In the real game, it'll be better. For now, I'm just trying to show it off a bit and see how it works.

Thanks for the images! Those balloons may come in handy!

As for the entrances, I had seen your post and edited them! Do they look better now?

Which parts? I know I have darker lines on the horizontal parts of the tents that are supposed to be set at the back - like the edging of the tent, while the one without the dark line across the top is the one to fill in the rest of the roof.

For stands, I'll probably just use the recolored versions of those tent stands that are also in the Castle Town tileset, though add some sort of props to the tileset that can be added to give it a more Circus-feel. Like stuffed animals, shelves or barrels with candy, and that sort of thing. Colorful balls of various sizes... I'm still working on those! And I don't have to do cages, as the fences work just fine for that.

Now, I hope I'm not forgetting anything more...

i guess, in the example it looks appropriate happy.gif

maybe if the tent had some rope and tied to a wooden stick that would look more like a tent?

make plenty of colourful things, that should looks more like circus laugh.gif

Hm... I'm not sure where I could apply the rope and wooden stick whatnot. Should I make one for the sides and the corners, as well as the front somehow? I'll have to play around with it, I suppose.

Maybe put barrels in various colors? And of course, there's balls... not sure what else to add. Just different colors for the stands? I only have red right now, as shown in the screen shot.

But... does anyone know an easier way to align the tilesets props? I probably edited the Circus Tileset at least 20 times trying to readjust it and everything...

Looking nice but I agree about the plain tent. Dosn't look too well with the other tents.
