Okay, the resource race has inspired me to start working on sprites and such, so I figured I'd display some of my WiP that I am doing. Some more modern sprites.

First, the OC male and female from Slenderman's Army!

A cute, kind of shy blonde girl.

A kind of nerdy punkish girl.

A tomboy!

Any feedback is appreciated!

That is quite detailed. Especially the charsets.

Thanks, I'm trying to add a lot more details to my sprites, the ones for the Halloween Contest were a bit lacking in that department I felt. I am still having trouble getting shading right, especially on hair for some reason.

I didn't even notice the problem you mentioned. Those charsets look that good.

i think... hmm, i think u might want to define/ darken their parts a bit more, if that helps.
like darken some of the shades, and make it so what ur looking at is still visible from afar... like hm, i hope u don't mind this. :
.

i don't want to influence what shading style u have, but if it were me, i think.. i'd darken some of the border lines. ( >.<) U should still be able to relatively tell when a shirt starts, or where an arm is, when u zoom out to maybe 1/4 the size.
When ur working on a picture, zooming out constantly can really help, or shading in grayscale and then adding colour. \o/

Specifically for the hair.. it might help to maybe brighten the parts that are immediately facing the light.
Hair tends to be reflective, and the differences between highlights and shadows can be pretty large. Like in this picture.. :
.

Ahhhh! Thanks so much Rune! That was actually really helpful advice! I actually don't have a shading style, so please influence me! I dunno why, but for some reason I have a really hard time wrapping my head around where shading would go, but since these are all based off real people I know, I can just look at actual pictures of them, great idea!

So, I have discovered that I work best when I'm doing a request from other people or given a direction to work in. As such, I was thinking about opening up a commission/request topic, but I'm not positive anyone would want my work, so I'm posting some examples here and seeing what you all think, judge me harshly, please.

I've been trying to work on things less adorable. This is a jack in the box for Lullaby, the newest project by Jonnie19 and myself. I'm hoping it's right creepy, but I'm not sure on the shading, it could probably be better.

Creepy?

What do you all think? Creepy enough?

Hair that is placed near the front of someone's head casts a shadow. For your hairs you might want to add a bit more darks closer to the edges around the foreheads to give it some strength. Not bad at all, though.

Thanks Ratty, I can't believe I didn't even see that before now. I can't help but notice it on all my sprites now XD.

Anyway, out of boredom I thought I would see if I could make an animated battler like Holder, so far I just have the one pose, and I ended up doing more copying than I really intended, but here it is for you all to judge.

I'm not one for critique on sprite work.. but I love your attempt at a animated battler, can you upload a version of it at it's original size?

The colours and the shading look great from my view, I can't really see anything wrong with it. Nice work! happy.gif

Thanks Legacy, it's a lot of fun actually to make something other than the standard sprites, I'm going to try and finish up the poses and post a gif of it moving, kind of like Holder does XD, I also want to make some changes so it's more original. Here is the png of it, instead of a screen shot style, I'm not positive the size is going to be that different.

Watch out. Your darkest value for the green jacket is darker than the outline color. Otherwise this is one of your best sprites so far.

They're not bad at all. It takes time, practice, and patience to sprite characters, let alone animate them. (Although, once you get used to it enough, you find ways to make animating much easier then you would think.) Keep it up.

Decided to try my hand at something a little different; A Radio-Controlled Car! It's quite tiny!

I think that RC is missing a little XD if ya know what I mean.

For a more defined look, try lining the bottom edges with a darker color. Sometimes a straight black works, but sometimes a solid black makes it stand out to much. Having the same lightness in colors on top edges and bottom edges makes a sprite look flat.
